CHARLOTTE (AP) — Lance Stephenson has parlayed his finest NBA season into a new contract with the Charlotte Hornets after four years with Indiana. A person familiar with the contract says Stephenson has agreed to a three-year, $27 million deal with the Michael Jordan-led team, a package that includes a team option for the third season. Stephenson averaged 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists a game for the Pacers last season.
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Quarterback Kyle Orton has been released by the Dallas Cowboys after skipping all offseason workouts amid reports he might retire. The move saves Dallas about $3.25 million this season, but will cost the team about that amount on the salary cap over the next two seasons. Former Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden takes over as Tony Romo’s backup.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Alabama and Southern California will play in the 2016 Cowboys Classic in Arlington, Texas, on Labor Day weekend. The last time Alabama and USC met in the regular season was 1978, when the Crimson Tide were the AP national champions and the Trojans finished No. 1 in the UPI poll. Defending national champion Florida State plays Oklahoma State in this year’s Cowboys Classic on Aug. 30.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Rangers have agreed to terms with free agent forward Matthew Lombardi. The 32-year-old Lombardi had 20 goals and 50 points in 46 games in Switzerland last season, leading his team in goals and assists, and tied for sixth in the league in goals. Lombardi has 101 goals and 262 points in 536 NHL games.
UNDATED (AP) — Welterweight champ Manny Pacquiao will return to China for his next fight, taking on Chris Algieri Nov. 22 in the gambling enclave of Macau. The scheduled bout comes a year after the Filipino headlined the first big fight card there with a win over Brandon Rios. Pacquiao returns to Macau on a two-fight winning streak that began last September with his win over Rios.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — NASCAR Trucks series driver Erik Jones has been docked 10 championships points after his winning truck failed a post-race inspection last week in Iowa. Jones, driving the No. 51 truck owned by star Kyle Busch, led 131 laps on Friday en route to his first win in 2014. But an inspection revealed that Jones’s truck was too low.
Crew chief Eric Phillips has been fined $6,000 and placed on probation through the end of the calendar year, and Busch was docked 10 owner points. The 18-year-old Jones will make his NASCAR Nationwide series debut this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s home game against rival Iowa State will kick off at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 13. The Hawkeyes announced the start time for their date against the Cyclones on Wednesday. The matchup will be televised on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.
Iowa also says its opener against Northern Iowa will start at 11 a.m. The Hawkeyes will face Ball State at home on Sept. 6 at 2:30 p.m.
IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced its 2014 preseason All-Big 12 team today and Iowa State senior tight end E.J. Bibbs made the list.
A native of Chicago, Ill., Bibbs has been a unanimous preseason All-Big 12 choice by the majority of the college football publications, earning first-team honors from Athlon’s, Phil Steele, Sporting News, Lindy’s and Bleacher Report.
Bibbs was an All-Big 12 Second-Team selection in 2013 after catching 39 passes for 462 yards. Bibbs’ 39 catches was the second-most ever by a Cyclone tight end in school history. He was the only Cyclone to have multiple receptions in all 12 games a year ago.
Bibbs is on both the Mackey Award and CFPA Award watch lists for the nation’s best tight end.
It was a late entrance and an early exit for Iowa’s baseball All Star last night. Pitcher Tony Watson came out of the bullpen to begin the 8th inning for the National League squad, but only ended up throwing one pitch, as he induced a fly out from White Sox slugger Jose Abreu. Watson says he wasn’t disappointed to only get to throw a single pitch.
As one of twenty five players playing in their first All Star Game, Watson says he’s hopeful for a chance to get back. The National League lost the game to the American League five to three. Former Cedar Rapids Kernel Mike Trout, now in his third season with the Angels, was selected as the game’s Most Valuable Player after driving in two runs and scoring another.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Angels outfielder Mike Trout was named MVP of the All-Star game after producing an RBI triple and the tiebreaking double in the American League’s 5-3 win over the National League in Minnesota. Derek Jeter led off the first and third innings with hits in his 14th and final All-Star game before retiring. Miguel Cabrera add a two-run homer for the AL, which is 14-3-1 in the last 18 All-Star games.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Bud Selig maintains Major League Baseball had no idea Alex Rodriguez received a medical exemption from the sport’s drug administrator to use a testosterone-boosting substance in 2007. According to the book “Blood Sport: Alex Rodriguez, Biogenesis and the Quest to End Baseball’s Steroid Era,” Rodriguez was granted an exemption by Bryan W. Smith, then the independent administrator of baseball’s drug program. The New York Yankees third baseman is serving a season-long ban this year after an MLB drug investigation.
UNDATED (AP) — All-Star guard Dwyane Wade is staying with the Miami Heat, saying he has confidence in the organization and the team it is building. A person familiar with the situation says Wade signed a two-year package that includes a player option for the second season. Financial terms were not announced, though it’s expected Wade’s salary for next season will not reach the $20.2 million he would have made under his previous contract.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) — Trevor Ariza has officially become a Houston Rocket after being acquired in a three-team trade with New Orleans and Washington. The Rockets get Ariza from the Wizards and forward Alonzo Gee, guard Scotty Hopson and a 2015 first-round draft pick from the Pelicans. The Rockets will send center Omer Asik, forward Omri Casspi and cash considerations to New Orleans, while the Wizards will receive center Melvin Ely and a trade exception.
CLEVELAND (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations says free agent Mike Miller has agreed to a 2-year, $5.5 million contract with the Cavaliers, re-uniting him with superstar LeBron James. He’ll make $2.7 million next season, and a second-year player option is worth $2.8 million. Miller played in 82 games for Memphis last season, hitting 46 percent of his 233 3-point attempts.
