Pleasant Valley forfeits state girls track title

Sports

July 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A girls track and field team in Iowa has lost its state title after a runner was declared ineligible because she competed against college athletes at invitational meets. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Board of Directors voted Friday to take away the Class 4A title the Pleasant Valley Spartans won in May. A runner for Pleasant Valley, near the Quad Cities, competed against college track athletes at three out-of-state meets, making her ineligible to compete in the state championship.

Superintendent Jim Spelhaug says it’s unfair for the board to strip the school of the title when coaches and administrators didn’t know what the runner had done until June. Urbandale will be declared state champions instead. Pleasant Valley must also return the state championship trophy, its first in 23 years

Hawkeyes to offer student tickets to public

Sports

July 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa athletic director Gary Barta says the Hawkeyes will make any unsold student football tickets available to the general public as well on Aug. 1. The move comes on the heels of a drop in student tickets sales, which plummeted from 10,000 just two years ago to roughly 7,300 in 2013.

Barta said Friday that the Hawkeyes have yet to reach 7,000 student tickets sold for next season. That means that as many as 3,000 spots could soon be up for grabs.

Barta says that while he hopes students will purchase all 10,000 of their available seats, Iowa can’t sit back like it did a year ago and simply hope students bought as many tickets as they used to.

Chiefs make series of moves ahead of practice

Sports

July 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed offensive tackle Ryan Harris and linebacker Josh Mauga while waiving linebacker DeRon Furr on Thursday before their first full-squad practice of training camp. Of course, the big news of the day is the arrival of Jamaal Charles. The Pro Bowl running back was expected at practice after agreeing to terms on a two-year contract extension that will result in $18 million in additional money and keep him with the Chiefs through the 2017 season.

Outside linebacker Justin Houston is also expected at camp after skipping the entire offseason as he angles for a new deal. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract. The Chiefs have also placed fullback James Baker on the reserve/did not report list.

July 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Orlando Magic will have all three of their draft picks in training camp following the signing of second-round pick Devyn Marble. Magic general manager Rob Hennigan announced the signing of the 56th pick Thursday. Terms were not disclosed. Marble joins fellow Magic first-round selections Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton, who have already signed contracts.

Orlando picked up the extra pick on draft night, along with Evan Fournier, by trading veteran Arron Afflalo to Denver. The 6-foot-6 Marble finished his career at Iowa as the school’s fifth all-time leading scorer, averaging 17 points and 3.6 assists as a senior. The son of former NBA player Roy Marble, the younger Marble was a first-team All-Big Ten selection.
