Sports

July 30th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (AP) — The St. Louis Walk of Fame already features 10 men who played for the St. Louis Cardinals. Tim McCarver is about to make it No. 11. The former Cardinals catcher and Hall of Fame broadcaster will be inducted Monday on the Delmar Loop, site of the Walk of Fame.

McCarver was just 17 when he was called up to St. Louis in 1959. He was a two-time All Star for the Cardinals and was part of the 1964 and 1967 World Series-winning teams.

He later played for Philadelphia, Montreal and Boston before retiring as a player in 1980. He became a national TV broadcaster, calling 24 World Series before retiring after the 2013 series. He is now working part time on some Cardinals TV broadcasts.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Three-time defending national champion North Dakota State is picked to win the Missouri Valley Football Conference title. The poll of league coaches, media and sports information directors released Tuesday shows the Bison with 24 out of 39 first-place votes and 370 points. NDSU has won 24 straight games. The Bison had a change in head coaches over the winter when Chris Klieman was named to replace Craig Bohl, who left for Wyoming.

Youngstown State is tabbed for fourth with 240 points, followed by Southern Illinois (237), Illinois State (197), Missouri State (180), South Dakota (121), Western Illinois (96) and Indiana State (50).

Chiefs linebacker Johnson sets sights on record

Sports

July 30th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson still believes his best days are ahead. The 31-year-old veteran is beginning his 10th season, coming off his third Pro Bowl and closing in on the franchise record for tackles. He needs just 19 to reach 1,000 for his career, which would be one more than Gary Spani recorded from 1978-86. Johnson said this week that he hasn’t thought about hanging up his cleats, even though he’ll turn 32 in November.

Johnson said he’s still working out in the offseason with Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, and as long as he can keep up with him, he’s going to keep going. Besides, there may be no more valuable player on the Chiefs defense than No. 56.

Gyorko, Ross lead Padres to 3-1 win vs Cardinals

Sports

July 30th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jedd Gyorko singled in Yangervis Solarte with the go-ahead run with two outs in the sixth inning and Tyson Ross and the San Diego Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 on Tuesday night. Ross, a first-time All-Star, won his third straight start by holding St. Louis to one run and four hits in six innings. He struck out seven, including fanning the side in his last inning. It was the eighth time Ross (10-10) went six-plus innings and allowed two or fewer runs, the second-longest such streak in the majors.

Gyorko returned Monday from a 44-game stay on the disabled list with plantar fasciitis. His run-scoring single to left off Lance Lynn came just as it seemed the Padres would strand two runners. Solarte homered into the short porch in right with two outs in the seventh. It was his second with the Padres and eighth overall.

Joaquin Benoit pitched the ninth for his third save.

Chiefs offensive line a grab-bag of bodies in camp

Sports

July 28th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The presumptive favorite to win the starting right guard spot with the Kansas City Chiefs worked out with the third team on Monday. The guy who is challenging him for the spot slid over to center during another portion of the workout. Rishaw Johnson and Zach Fulton are just the start of the offensive line shuffle.

After watching three linemen who started last season depart in free agency – all within hours of each other – the Chiefs are trying to cobble together some sort of protection for quarterback Alex Smith that can also manage to open up running lanes for Jamaal Charles during training camp.

And with lingering questions about the health of left tackle Eric Fisher and an ankle injury to starting right tackle Donald Stephenson, that job hasn’t gotten a whole lot easier.
