Nation’s Prep Baseball Coach Win Leader Gene Schultz Retires

Sports

August 19th, 2014 by Jim Field

A 45-year baseball coaching career of high school kids officially came to an end last night when Gene Schultz tendered his resignation at Kee, Lansing.

Schultz is the national win leader with eye-popping numbers. His Iowa record of 1,754-398 dwarfs all other rivals. It includes a record of 176-57 from 11 spring or fall seasons. His National Federation record, which includes summer season games only, is 1,578-341.

He arrived at Kee High School in the fall of 1969 and almost immediately his teams stamped themselves as a perennial power.

Under Schultz’s guidance the Kee Hawks authored numerous entries into the Iowa all-time baseball list and the NFHS National Record Book. His teams have an Iowa best of 9 summer state championships which was equaled by Assumption, Davenport this past season. His 9 summer state titles are the best of any Iowa coach.

He took the Hawks to 19 summer state tournaments and 16 championship games, both Iowa bests for a coach or a school. Their 32 summer state tournament wins (32-10) is also an Iowa best, for a school or a coach. In addition, his teams won two Fall State Championships and finished runner-up twice.

His teams were noted for playing opponents in all four of Iowa’s class structure and would travel extensively to compete against the top teams. He had a hand in overseeing a revitalization of their home diamond, Shooky Fink Field, turning it into one of the marquee sites for high school baseball.

Schultz also coached boys’ basketball at Kee, registering 398 victories.

Ex Iowa coach denies bullying players

Sports

August 18th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Longtime Iowa women’s field hockey coach Tracey Griesbaum says she was fired after a group of former players falsely claimed that she mistreated them. Griesbaum tells The Associated Press that she did nothing to warrant being relieved from her post leading one of Iowa’s most successful women’s athletic programs. She denied creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

In her first interview since her Aug. 4 firing, she says she conducted herself professionally “every single day” of her 14-year tenure. She says “there’s a lot of untruths and a lot of fabrications” being made by former players.

Iowa education professor Betsy Altmaier was a faculty representative to athletics through June 2011. She says Griesbaum’s firing was deserved. She says she’s aware of three players who felt mistreated.

Richardson Named Starting QB For ISU Season-Opener

Sports

August 18th, 2014 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head football coach Paul Rhoads has a starting quarterback for the season-opener against North Dakota State (Aug. 30). His name is Sam Richardson.

Rhoads announced the decision to the media after this morning’s practice.

Richardson, a junior from Winter Park, Fla., was ISU’s starting quarterback in the first eight games of the 2013 season, coming out of the gates with outstanding numbers when he passed for more than 240 yards in the first four games.

Injuries, especially a tender ankle, hampered Richardson’s productivity later in the season and was eventually replaced by Grant Rohach as the Cyclone signal-caller for the final four games.

Rhoads noted the poise and leadership Richardson emanated throughout the first two weeks of fall camp.

“Sam has displayed great leadership and that certainly includes poise in the pocket where he has been very much in control of our offense and of himself,” Rhoads said. “His understanding of the scheme and his decision making has really grown in the last two weeks, and maybe as much as anything, he is throwing a great ball, an accurate ball, a tight ball and a catchable ball.”

Richardson’s road to starting quarterback began in his freshman season (2012) when he replaced a concussed Steele Jantz in the first quarter of the Kansas game. He proceeded to dissect the Kansas secondary by connecting on 23-of-27 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns in a 51-23 Cyclone victory.

Richardson’s first four games of 2013 were solid, completing 62.3 percent of his passes and nine touchdowns despite tweaking his ankle in the season-opener vs. UNI.

Unfortunately, Richardson re-injured the ankle in the Texas Tech game and his mobility and efficiency suffered throughout the remainder of the season. On top of the ankle injury, Richardson also played with a jammed thumb for much of the season.

One of Richardson’s strengths is his mobility. In his first six games as a starter, Richardson produced three games of 70 yards or more rushing. Despite his limited playing time late in the 2013 season, he still ranked third on the team in rushing with 356 yards.

Richardson is now ready to focus on North Dakota State.

“I’m excited,” Richardson said. “Obviously, going into the season this is what I wanted, so it’s a nice relief that I will be back there.”

Richardson has totaled 1,938 passing yards, 19 touchdown completions and 589 rushing yards in his Cyclone career. His 19 career touchdown passes is three shy of ISU’s top-10. He had an eight-game streak of completing a touchdown pass end in the Baylor game last season, tying for the third longest streak in school history.

Newton, Stewart lead Panthers past Chiefs, 28-16

Sports

August 18th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Cam Newton made a successful return following ankle surgery, Jonathan Stewart ran for two touchdowns and the Carolina Panthers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-16 on Sunday night. Newton completed 4 of 9 passes for 65 yards and led a pair of touchdown drives in the preseason game before exiting late in the second quarter with Carolina (1-1) up 14-6.

Stewart ran for 26 yards on four carries and made a strong case to be the Panthers’ goal-line back – if not their primary ball carrier – with scoring runs of 3 and 2 yards. Carolina managed just a yard in on its first three possessions before Stewart provided a spark with a 17-yard run. The Panthers scored touchdowns on their next two possessions.

Alex Smith was 14 of 22 for 127 yards for Kansas City (1-1). Rookie Aaron Murray’s first NFL pass resulted in a 43-yard touchdown strike, but he also had an interception.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Matt Carpenter homered, doubled and drove in three runs, Adam Wainwright tied for the major league lead with his 15th win and the St. Louis Cardinals topped the San Diego Padres 7-6 on Sunday. Jon Jay’s two-run single highlighted a four-run first inning when the Cardinals batted around against rookie Odrisamer Despaigne (3-4). Peter Bourjos and Tony Cruz each had an RBI single for St. Louis, which took three of four in the series.

Carpenter’s two-run double off Tim Stauffer in the sixth made it a three-run cushion for Wainwright (15-7), who joined the Reds’ Johnny Cueto at 15 wins. Milwaukee’s Wily Peralta was seeking his 15th later Sunday. Wainwright allowed three earned runs in seven innings with five strikeouts and one walk. He’s 5-0 at home with a 1.55 ERA against the Padres.

Seth Maness got two outs for his second save.

Gyorko powers Padres past Cardinals 9-5

August 17th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jeff Gyorko hit his third career grand slam and drove in five runs, sparking the San Diego Padres to a 9-5 rain-delayed victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. Gyorko’s eighth homer came on an 0-1 pitch from Kevin Siegrist (1-3) with one out in the seventh. The Padres had loaded the bases on two singles and a walk before Gyorko’s drive to left. Rain then halted play later in the inning.

The Cardinals dropped to three games back of Milwaukee for the NL Central lead. The Brewers beat Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers 3-2. San Diego won for the sixth time in its last eight games.

Iowa hosts final public scrimmage

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz wants his players focused on little more than football during fall camp. That’s why fans get one chance to see what the Hawkeyes might look like when they open the season in two weeks.

Iowa’s annual mid-camp open practice, held Saturday at Kinnick Stadium, is the only public glimpse of the Hawkeyes in August. It’s also typically the only time coach Kirk Ferentz provides updates on the program.

Ferentz says fullback Adam Cox is out for the season after tearing a knee ligament. But he also praised the competition for starting spots and kicker and punter, even though Iowa’s placekickers looked shaky on Saturday.
