Cardinals beat Brewers 3-2 to win 6th straight

Sports

September 5th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Marco Gonzales and his fellow St. Louis relievers worked out of several jams in combining for six innings of one-run ball, and the Cardinals held off the slumping Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 Thursday night for their sixth straight win. The Cardinals moved to a season-high 14 games above .500 and extended their lead to four games in the NL Central over the Brewers, who lost their ninth straight.

St. Louis used the bullpen early after Michael Wacha was limited to three innings in his first start off the disabled list. Gonzales went 2 1-3 innings for the win. The Brewers stranded potential tying runs in scoring position from the sixth through the ninth. St. Louis never trailed after Yadier Molina’s two-run single in the first off Wily Peralta.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals activated Michael Wacha from the disabled list to start Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers. The move was expected for the 23-year-old Wacha, who was on the disabled list since June 18 with a right shoulder stress reaction. He is 5-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 15 starts.

St. Louis also called up first baseman Xavier Scruggs from Triple-A Memphis. Scruggs, who was batting seventh Thursday, was hitting .286 with 21 home runs and 87 RBIs in the minors. The Cardinals moved outfielder Shane Robinson from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

St. Louis has won five straight to take a three-game lead in the NL Central over Milwaukee.

Iowa State RT Jacob Gannon leaves team

Sports

September 4th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State says right tackle Jacob Gannon has left the team just two days before it hosts No. 20 Kansas State. Cyclones spokesman Mike Green tells The Associated Press on Thursday that Gannon quit for “personal reasons.”

Gannon, a three-time academic All-Big 12 selection, started eight games last season and was in the lineup for last week’s 34-14 season-opening loss to North Dakota State. Highly-touted redshirt freshman Jake Campos is expected to start in place of Gannon.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — ST. LOUIS (AP)— Peter Bourjos singled home the winning run in the ninth inning, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a series sweep and their fifth straight win with a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. Pittsburgh closer Mark Melancon (2-4), in his second inning of work, got the first two men before Yadier Molina drew a walk. John Jay singled to left. Bourjos followed with a single to center and Molina easily beat the throw home.

St. Louis grabbed the Central Division lead Monday and increased it to 2 1-2 games over the Milwaukee Brewers. It is largest lead this season for the defending division champs. Trevor Rosenthal (2-6) pitched the ninth for the win.

Chiefs turn undrafted rookies into key players

Sports

September 4th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — They play quarterback and wide receiver, tight end and offensive line. They can be found on the both sides of the ball, first on the depth chart and last. There are 16 of them on the Kansas City Chiefs this season, and what they all have in common in this: They starred in college, went through the entire draft without anybody willing to take a shot on them, and then managed to scratch and claw their way into the NFL anyway.

They’re undrafted free agents. The unwanted who managed to become indispensable. The Chiefs have four who will be starting on Sunday against Tennessee, not including kicker Cairo Santos and long-snapper Thomas Gafford. They’ve had at least one newcomer make the roster each of the last 12 seasons.

Iowa DNR says pheasant population is high

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

September 3rd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa wildlife officials say the pheasant population is high ahead of hunting season. The state Department of Natural Resources says the annual August roadside pheasant count recorded the highest number of birds since 2008. That’s a statewide average of about 17 birds per 30 miles. A record low 40,000 hunters pursued pheasants last year. The latest roadside index indicates hunters could harvest more than 250,000 birds.

The department says it is working to enhance the state’s habitats for pheasant and quail. That includes grant funding and a partnership with the Pheasants Forever group. The regular pheasant season is Oct. 25 through Jan. 10. The state’s youth pheasant season is set for Oct. 18 and Oct. 19.

Chiefs give Santos shot to fulfill father’s dreams

Sports

September 3rd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Less than a year after his father was killed in a plane crash in Brazil, Cairo Santos has fulfilled both of their dreams. The undrafted rookie out of Tulane will be the starting kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday against Tennessee. Santos beat out incumbent Ryan Succop for the starting nod. And in a twist of fate, Succop has signed with the Titans and will be kicking in Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, too.

Santos arrived in the U.S. as an exchange student who had dreams of playing soccer. Turned out that he was a pretty good kicker in football, too. He won the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s best in college, and will now get to show what he can do in the NFL.
