Cards Fall to Brewers Friday

Sports

September 5th, 2014 by admin

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Scooter Gennett drove in three runs and Mike Fiers pitched into the seventh inning to lead Milwaukee past St. Louis 6-2 Friday night, snapping the Brewers’ nine-game losing streak and trimming the Cardinals’ lead in the NL Central to three games.

Fiers (5-2) gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings, improving to 5-1 in six starts since being called up from Triple-A Nashville on Aug. 9.

Cardinals starter John Lackey (2-2) gave up all six runs and nine hits in six innings as St. Louis snapped a six-game winning streak.

Gennett had a two-run single in the third and an RBI double in the fifth, and Lucroy added a run-scoring single to put the Brewers up 4-0.

Jhonny Peralta’s 19th homer got St. Louis on the board in the sixth, but Khris Davis’ two-run shot in the bottom of the inning made it 6-1.

Rain Impacts Parking Conditions Around Jack Trice Stadium

Sports

September 5th, 2014 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – With saturated conditions and, potentially more rain in the forecast, Iowa State University officials are again asking for patience and understanding from individuals attending Saturday’s football game against Kansas State.

“Fans should plan to arrive early for Saturday’s 11 a.m. kickoff because wet conditions may affect the areas around Jack Trice Stadium,” Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. “We will try to park as many vehicles as possible, but conditions could limit access to portions of the grass lots. We thank fans, in advance, for their cooperation.”

Here are some key points regarding parking:

• There will definitely be no RV or bus parking in the public grass lots (G2, G3, G4, G5, G8 or Veterinary Medicine). There are spaces on campus – north of Molecular Biology – available for fans who need to park a bus or RV.

• Based upon current conditions, Iowa State officials anticipate having to close public grass lots (G2, G3, G4, G5 or G8) south of the stadium. Should conditions improve overnight, portions of those lots could be opened for automobiles Saturday morning.

• Individuals, who normally park in those lots, are encouraged to consider spaces in campus lots (click here and select the “parking lot” layer for a campus map; the red, yellow or blue lots will be available at no charge for fans).

• There will be no public parking in the grassy areas near Hilton Coliseum Saturday. Those lots are being held for overflow handicapped parking and overflow donor parking (from Lot G7 should part of that area become unusable).

The best places to seek parking if your normal area is closed are various campus lots (click here and select the “parking lot” layer; use the red, yellow or blue lots).

Because the parking lot conditions can change, fans should check Cyclones.com (click here for the Gameday Central link) or the department’s various social media channels (Facebook and Twitter) for the latest information.

No. 20 K-State braces for early Big 12 road game

Sports

AMES, Iowa (AP) – When Kansas State’s trip to Iowa State was shifted to early September to please the Big 12’s television partners, it seemed like a disadvantage for the Wildcats. It might not be such a bad move after all.

No. 20 Kansas State (1-0) didn’t look like it needed a few extra weeks to prep for its league opener after dismantling Stephen F. Austin 55-16 last weekend. Meanwhile, the Cyclones (0-1) must host their first Top 25 opponent of the year on Saturday – just a week after a 34-14 loss to FCS power North Dakota State.

Iowa seeking improvement against Ball State

Sports

September 5th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa hardly looked like a Big Ten contender in a narrow win over Northern Iowa.
The Hawkeyes will look to inch closer to their potential this weekend.

The key takeaway for Iowa (1-0) following a 31-23 win over the Panthers last week was that a number of inexperienced players learned valuable lessons without actually costing the Hawkeyes a game. Iowa’s rebuilt defense was burned for a number of big plays and its offense was outgained by an FCS opponent.

Coach Kirk Ferentz isn’t overly concerned about the mistakes made in the opener – as long as they aren’t repeated on Saturday against Ball State (1-0).

Quincy player from Iowa sentenced in assault case

Sports

September 5th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) – A basketball player from Iowa who’s on the Quincy University team has been sentenced to a year of probation on reduced charges linked to his alleged attempt to steal alcohol from a Walmart store. The Quincy Herald-Whig reports that 21-year-old Scott Bruxvoort of Mitchellville, Iowa also was assessed roughly $2,100 in fines and court costs during his Adams County sentencing hearing Wednesday.  Bruxvoort also must perform 50 hours of community service, and a 30-day jail term has been deferred.

Bruxvoort pleaded guilty last month to misdemeanor battery and theft charges related to an April confrontation with a Wal-Mart security officer.  Police say Bruxvoort grabbed the Wal-Mart worker while trying to flee the store with alcohol. His basketball coach, Marty Bell, says Bruxvoort will serve a five-game suspension at the start of the coming season.

5 ex-Chiefs back at Arrowhead Stadium with Titans

Sports

September 5th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It’ll be a reunion Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. The Tennessee Titans are visiting Kansas City in what amounts to a homecoming for wide receiver Dexter McCluster, kicker Ryan Succop and a slew of other former Chiefs players. In this modern era of free agency, it’s not uncommon for players to face their former teams. A few members of the Chiefs have a history with Tennessee, including wide receiver Donnie Avery.

But when McCluster and Succop are lumped together with safety Bernard Pollard, defensive end Ropati Pitoitua and running back Jackie Battle, well, that’s a whole lot of familiarity. What makes it even stranger? Succop was waived by the Chiefs just this past weekend.
