Hawkeyes Fall to No. 14 Michigan State

Sports

October 22nd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The University of Iowa women’s soccer team fell, 3-0, at No. 14 Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at DeMartin Socccer Complex. Iowa finishes the regular season 9-4-4 overall and 3-4-3 in Big Ten play.

The Hawkeyes are Big Ten Tournament qualifiers, closing out the year eighth in the conference standings with 12 points.

The Spartans drilled a goal in the fourth minute on a corner kick opportunity. The one-nil score held into halftime, but a pair of Spartan goals in the final period put the match out of reach. The final score came on a penalty kick in the 74th minute.

Iowa managed a 9-4 advantage in shots, finishing both halves with a two-shot edge over Michigan State. Both teams registered four shots on goal for the contest.

Goalkeeper Macy Enneking finished the contest with two saves.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI

“Today we didn’t have the right mentality off the start and Michigan State is good enough to punish those decisions. We believe in our group. They need to have the same belief in themselves at times, but I know that every time these women have been challenged with adversity they have responded in a great, positive way.

We are elated with getting into the Big Ten Tournament, extending the chance to grow and play for championships.”

Hawkeyes Take a Set Against Terrapins

Sports

October 22nd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — University of Iowa volleyball fell to the Maryland Terrapins, 3-1, inside XFINITY Center Pavilion on Saturday evening.

Redshirt freshman Nataly Moravec led the way for the Hawkeyes posting 13 kills, a career-best five service aces, and a solo block. Fifth year Caitlan Buettner posted 11 kills with a clip of .423 and nine digs. SeniorBailey Ortega and freshman Kaia Mateo split the assists with 21 and 18, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (Maryland, 25-16): Maryland started the set on a roll, but the Hawkeyes closed the spread to two with redshirt junior Anna Davis and Moravec laying down two kills. After a couple of Terrapin kills, Moravec took it upon herself to score three straight — a kill to give Iowa possession and two service aces — bringing Iowa within one,, 8-7 Maryland. The Terrapins made an attempt to pull ahead, but Iowa followed suit, capitalizing off an error from its opponents, a kill from junior Michelle Urquhart, a block from Urquhart and redshirt senior Delaney McSweeney, and an ace from Ortega to tie the set at 12. Maryland pulled ahead, while Moravec put down two kills to keep Iowa in the set, but the Terrapins ultimately finished the set with a win.

SET 2 (Maryland, 25-16): The set started out evenly matched as the teams exchanged kills. Redshirt junior Amanda Darling was awarded a kill off a reception placed short on the Terrapins side and a kill from Moravec tied the score at two-all. Iowa tied it up again at six, following a kill from Moravec assisted by Mateo, a block from freshmen Rosa Vesty and Gabby Deery, and an ace from Moravec. The Hawkeyes continued to fight as Moravec, McSweeney, and Deery each laid down kills, but the Terrapins came out on top.

SET 3 (Iowa, 25-17): The Hawkeyes jumped out front early with kills from McSweeney and Moravec. Maryland answered, but Iowa was not backing down, tying the score at four, five, and six before breaking through on a five-point scoring run, highlighted by a block from McSweeney and senior Audrey Black and a Vesty ace. Once again, the Terrapins responded, but the Hawkeyes called a timeout. Vesty scored with a kill assisted by Ortega out of the break. Maryland got a kill down and Iowa answered, scoring 10-consecutive points with kills from Buettner (3), Black (2), and Vesty and an ace from Moravec. Maryland scored once more, but Buettner settled the set with a kill assisted by Mateo.

SET 4 (Maryland, 25-17): McSweeney got Iowa on the board with a kill assisted by Ortega to tie the Terrapins, one-all. Maryland pulled ahead, but Vesty and Moravec kills brought the spread within two. Maryland jumped out front, while kills from Black, Buettner, and McSweeney kept the Hawkeyes in the set. Iowa went on a 7-2 run towards the end of the set but wasn’t able to catch the Terrapins, and they took the set and match.

Hawkeyes Fall to Gophers, 12-10

Sports

October 22nd, 2023 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (Via Hawkeye Sports.com) – The University of Iowa football team was defeated by Minnesota, 12-10, on Saturday evening on Duke Slater Field at Kinnick Stadium. Deacon Hill was 10-for-28 on passing attempts for 116 yards. Iowa had four rushers combine for 11 yards on 28 attempts and Hill added a rushing touchdown. Diante Vines had a team high 62-yards on three receptions. The Gophers outgained the Hawkeyes 239-127 yards and forced three Iowa turnovers.

Coach Kirk Ferentz told Hawkeye Sports.Com, “I thought both teams really played hard, competed hard. What you expected from a Big Ten game certainly at this point in this season. Clearly, a lot of things we need to do better. Top of the list is ball security. You can’t win football games turning the ball over three times, and two of those directly tied to six point they got. That is first and foremost that will never change. The opportunities we had we weren’t able to capitalize, and that is unfortunate.

Proud of our guys, I thought that I thought the guys played hard, I thought they had a good week of practice, thought the effort was good and they competed hard. Guys that are partially injured, that type of thing, found a way to get out on the field and compete. Appreciative of that. It’s a tough thing, anytime you take one on the chin it’s hard. Back on our feet tomorrow, go back to work and in this circumstance, we have an extra week to figure things out and see if we can’t find a little better remedy. Really no different than we did a month ago, that is where we are at right now.”

  • The Hawkeyes opened the game on offense and drove the ball 70-yards on 11 plays to set up a 23-yard field goal by Drew Stevens.
  • Minnesota responded with a 43-yard field goal to cap a nine play 45-yard drive with 17 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • Iowa used a quarterback sneak as Deacon Hill found the endzone to cap a six play 46-yard drive with 49 seconds remaining in the first half.
  • On the first drive of the second half the Gophers used 13-plays over 6:01 to drive 64 yards and set up a 44-yard field goal.
  • Minnesota cut the Iowa lead to one with a 28-yard field goal with 2:25 remaining in the third quarter.
  • The Gophers added another field goal with 8:33 remaining in the game to take a two-point lead that they would hold for the remainder of the contest.

The Hawkeyes are on a bye during Week 9. Iowa returns to action Nov. 4, facing Northwestern at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Slow offensive start dooms Trojans in season finale

Sports

October 21st, 2023 by CHris Parks

The Atlantic Trojans fought hard to the bitter end but a slow offensive start was too much to overcome in a 42-7 loss to the Nevada Cubs on Friday night. The game started with a nice spark as Nolan Waters brought the opening kickoff out to the 44 yard line but the Trojans couldn’t move the ball and ended that first possession with an interception. The two teams then traded punts before Nevada opened up the scoring. Connor King hit capped off an 11 play drive for the cubs with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Kingsbury.

The King to Kingsbury connection became the story of the night. The duo hooked up for four scoring connections on the night. Kingsbury came into the contest with 7 touchdown catches on the season and he made some terrific catches to pile four more scores onto that number. The Cubs star running back Cason Stevenson also had a nice night with scoring runs of 8 and 12 yards.

Atlantic couldn’t hit any big plays early and didn’t pick up a first down until their final drive of the first half. The Trojans fought hard in the second half though. They recovered an onside kick to start the half and drove the ball downfield with hard running to get a score. Dante Hedrington capped off that possession with a one-yard plunge. The Trojans ran the ball pretty effectively in the second half but it was too little, too late.

After the Trojans score to open up the second half the Cubs swung back quickly. Stevenson had a 42-yard touchdown two plays after the Atlantic score to thwart any Trojan momentum.

Nevada improved to 7-2 on the season and will wait for their playoff pairing. Atlantic finishes the 2023 season with a mark of 3-6.

Exira-EHK’s control on offense leads them to Victory

Sports

October 20th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Exira-EHK played their best football Friday night and it earned them a victory in the first round of playoff football 30-16 against Glidden-Ralston. In the first quarter both teams scored on their opening drives. And, then each responded with a three and out. The offense found itself once again scoring multiple times before halftime making it 22-8. Jameson Kilworth threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and connected with Each Emgarten 4 times for 108 yards, and 2 scores.

In the second half the offense started to slow down for the Spartans as Glidden-Ralston forced two sacks and scored again with their run game to make it 22-16. Exira-EHK responded with an impressive drive marching down the field. They found themselves on a crucial fourth and goal with Kilworth scrambling and finding Alex Hansen for 10 yards in the corner of the end zone to make it 30-16. The Wildcats sideline seemed deflated after the score and had a turnover on downs with the following drive.

The offense for Exira-EHK showed out thanks to players like Jameson Kilworth going 12-19, for 212 yards, and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions.

It was difficult game for the Spartans, regardless of the score. But Exira-EHK Head Coach Drew Buckholdt shared that he’s been having his team prepare for tough games like this.

A playoff win is big for Exira-EHK and this competitive Spartans team.

If the Exira-EHK team plays like they did tonight. With their defense grabbing two interceptions, having two sacks, and one fumble recovery. There could be a deep playoff run for the Spartans. But, it starts with cleaning up a few things and embracing whoever is in the next round.

The next round of the 8-player playoff schedule will be released Saturday morning.
