Chiefs’ Charles goes MIA in opening loss to Titans

Sports

September 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ Jamaal Charles had seven carries for 19 yards and four catches for 15 yards in a season-opening loss to Tennessee, stunningly low numbers for the All-Pro running back. His final eight touches? They netted a whopping 11 yards from scrimmage.

Charles said after, “I want to see the ball more and coach knows that,” and coach Andy Reid said Monday that not getting his biggest star the ball was “negligence on my part.”

Especially after the Chiefs gave him a two-year, $18.1 million extension before the season. Reid said the Titans took away much of what the Chiefs were trying to do with Charles, but he also made it clear that No. 25 needs to get the ball more for the team to be successful.

AP source: Chiefs sign DT Kevin Vickerson

Sports

September 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A person with knowledge of the deal says the Kansas City Chiefs have signed former Broncos defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson to a one-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team had not announced the move.  Vickerson will likely start right away. The Chiefs lost defensive tackle Mike DeVito to a season-ending ruptured Achilles tendon in Sunday’s loss to Tennessee.

Vickerson has spent the last four years in Denver, making 41 starts and will be returning there for a game with the Chiefs on Sunday. The Chiefs are still looking for a linebacker after losing Derrick Johnson to his own ruptured Achilles tendon.

Cardinals announce 2015 schedule

Sports

September 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The 2014 season still has nearly three weeks to go but the St. Louis Cardinals have already announced their 2015 regular-season schedule. The Cardinals said Monday they’ll open next season in Chicago for a three-game series with the Cubs starting April 6. They’ll then play three in Cincinnati before the home opener April 13 against Milwaukee.

The first interleague games will be in Cleveland, a three-game series against the Indians May 12 through May 14. St. Louis will then host Detroit for three games starting May 15.

The Cardinals’ final home stand will include games against NL Central rivals Cincinnati and Milwaukee. The Cardinals finish next season on the road, with games in Pittsburgh and Atlanta. The regular season ends Oct. 4.

Johnson, DeVito to miss rest of Chiefs season

Sports

September 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and starting defensive tackle Mike DeVito will miss the remainder of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season after MRI exams confirmed that both players ruptured their right Achilles tendons in Sunday’s loss to Tennessee.

Johnson went down without getting touched near the end of the first half. Eight plays later, early in the second half, DeVito went down at nearly the same spot on the field.

The blows are significant to a Chiefs team that was already missing several key pieces to injuries and suspensions, and was routed 26-10 by the Titans at Arrowhead Stadium. Johnson had four tackles before getting carted off the field, moving him within 15 of 1,000 for his career. That would surpass Gary Spani for the franchise record.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Matt Carpenter broke a scoreless tie with his two-run single in the seventh inning, Matt Adams added a three-run homer, and the St. Louis Cardinals extended their surge in the NL Central by beating the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 on Monday night.

St. Louis has won nine of 10, going from two games out to a season-high 4 1/2 games up in the division. The Cardinals are 10-3 against the Reds this season and 40-24 against the NL Central overall.

Shelby Miller (9-9) gave up three hits while pitching into the eighth and getting his first victory in three starts against Cincinnati this season. Two relievers finished the three-hitter.

Iowa State’s West emerges with historic game

Sports

September 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State fans haven’t had much to cheer about this season. The Cyclones are 0-2 after losses to North Dakota State and Kansas State. At least wide receiver Jarvis West gives them a reason to keep watching.

West caught a 17-yard touchdown pass, returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown and threw a 29-yard TD pass off a reverse in the first half of Saturday’s 32-28 loss to the Wildcats. West was just the fourth player since 1996 to score in those three ways in one game, according to STATS.

The Cyclones (0-2, 0-1 Big 12) hope to see more of the same from West when they face rival Iowa (2-0) on Saturday.
