AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s basketball team (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats (1-2, 0-0 AAC) 85-54 Sunday, in Hilton Coliseum. In the contest, senior Nikki Moody became the 26th player in Iowa State history to reach 1,000 career points.

The Cyclones were led by Williamson, who scored 17 points off 6-of-10 shooting and netted four 3-pointers. Iowa State shot a season-high 50.8 percent from the field off 33-of-65 shooting. Iowa State also knocked down 11 3-pointers, going 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) from deep. Senior Brynn Williamson netted 17 points off 6-of-10 shooting, 4-of-8 from 3-point range, while grabbing five rebounds. The game was her 30th in double figures during her ISU career.

Iowa State hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Moraga, California to participate in the St. Mary’s Thanksgiving Tournament. Iowa State will take on Wyoming on Friday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. and St. Mary’s on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 4:30 p.m.

Cornhuskers looking to enhance their bowl position

Sports

November 24th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — For the second straight year, Nebraska will go into its last regular-season game playing for nothing more than a best possible bowl bid. The Cornhuskers (8-3, 4-3) were eliminated from the Big Ten West race with Saturday’s 28-24 loss to Minnesota. They’ll enter Friday’s game in Iowa City trying to avoid losing a third straight game for the first time since 2008.

Nebraska squandered a 14-point halftime lead at home against Minnesota a week after it was blown out 59-24 at Wisconsin. The manner in which the Huskers have lost their last two games has a segment of the fan base grousing about the direction of the program under coach Bo Pelini.

The Huskers are 9-6 in Big Ten games the last two years, with none of those wins against teams that finished the season above .500 in conference play. Iowa (7-4, 4-3), which beat the Huskers in Lincoln last year, played Wisconsin tough in a 26-24 loss Saturday.

No. 18 Iowa women hold off Dayton, 90-83

IOWA CITY, Iowa. (AP) — Samantha Logic posted her fifth-career triple-double, and Bethany Doolittle scored 23 points and blocked five shots, to lead No. 18 Iowa women past Dayton 90-83 in the championship game of the Hawkeye Challenge on Saturday night. Logic scored 12 points to go along with 11 rebounds, 10 assists and four steals for Iowa (4-0). Ally Disterhoft added 18 points; Whitney Jennings scored 15, including three 3-pointers, and Melissa Dixon chipped in with 10.

Dayton (1-3) led took a 68-58 lead with 9:47 to play when Amber Deane got out on the break for a layup. Disterhoft scored the first four points during an 11-2 run and, fewer than 3 minutes later, Iowa trailed by just one.

After exchanging several buckets, Doolittle hit a pair of free throws with 3:24 left, giving the Hawkeyes their first lead since early in the half and sparking a 12-4 run to finish the game.

Northern Iowa runs over Missouri State, 38-24

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — David Johnson padded three school records in his final regular-season game, rushing for a career-high 205 yards and three touchdowns in Northern Iowa’s 38-24 win over Missouri State Saturday. It was the 22nd time in Johnson’s career that he rushed for more than 100 yards in a game, but the first time he topped 200. His three touchdown runs (6-, 31- and 9-yards) give him 59 for his career, his 205 yards give him 4,487 for his career, and he added 243 all-purpose yards to his career best mark (6,439).

The teams traded first-half touchdowns until Johnson broke open for his 31-yard scoring run to give Northern Iowa (8-4, 6-2 Missouri Valley) a 21-14 lead. Missouri State (4-8, 1-7) got a 28-yard field goal from Marcelo Bonani to cut the lead to 31-24 midway through the fourth, but Chad Owens put the game away with a 7-yard TD run.

Mahomes leads Texas Tech past Iowa State 34-31

Sports

November 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Patrick Mahomes passed for 328 yards and four touchdowns, the last a 44-yard fourth-quarter toss to Kenny Williams that lifted Texas Tech to a 34-31 victory over Iowa State on Saturday.

Iowa State led 31-27 lead on Aaron Wimberly’s 3-yard touchdown run early the fourth quarter, but missed a chance to extend the lead when Cole Netten’s 42-yard field goal attempt hooked left. Tech (4-7, 2-6 Big Twelve) then marched 75 yards in seven plays for the game-winner, which came when Mahomes found Williams all alone in the right flat and the 228-pounder rambled untouched to the end zone with 4:07 left to end the Red Raiders’ three-game losing streak.

Iowa State (2-7, 0-7) drove into Tech territory after Williams’ touchdown but gave up the ball on downs when quarterback Sam Richardson was stopped just short of converting at the Red Raiders’ 31.

No. 14 Wisconsin holds off Iowa 26-24

Sports

November 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Melvin Gordon surpassed 2,000 yard rushing with 200 yards and two touchdowns, and 14th-ranked Wisconsin held off Iowa 26-24 on Saturday for its sixth straight win. Gordon became the 17th FBS player with a 2,000-yard rushing season to lead the Badgers (9-2, 6-1 Big Ten). Wisconsin still has to beat Minnesota in Madison next weekend to earn a shot at Ohio State in the Big Ten title game.

Gordon’s performance came just hours after Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine broke his week-old FBS record with 427 yards rushing in a win over Kansas. But Gordon was sensational in his own right, cracking the 2,000-yard on an 88-yard run midway through the third quarter.

Jake Rudock had 311 yards passing and two TDs for the Hawkeyes (7-4, 4-3), who rallied from 16 down to get within 26-24 with just over 5 minutes left.

DELAND, Fla. (AP) — Andy Rice ran for two touchdowns and Drake concluded its 11th consecutive winning season with a 27-15 victory over Stetson on Saturday. Rice’s two touchdown runs were the first and last scores of the game, his 1-yarder with 4:52 left in the game concluding a 21-play, 90-yard drive. Rice was also 18-of-27 passing for 189 yards.

Conley Wilkins added 81 yards rushing on 16 carries, including a 7-yard run that capped a 13-play, 97-yard drive to give the Bulldogs (7-4, 6-2 Pioneer) the lead for good at 14-8 early in the second quarter. Spencer Lee added two field goals for a 20-8 halftime advantage.

Ryan Tentler threw 64 yards to Darius McGriff for a Stetson touchdown and Cole Mazza ran 1 yard for the other. Tentler was 14 of 22 for 225 yards with an interception for the Hatters (5-7, 3-5), who also lost two fumbles.
