No. 1 Northwestern hosts No. 3 Morningside in GPAC showdown

A Great Plains Athletic Conference showdown in Orange City on Saturday will feature two of the top ranked teams in NAIA when top ranked Northwestern hosts third ranked Morningside. The winner will be on the door step of the league title. Northwestern coach Matt McCarty says there is always a lot on the line when these two rivals meet.

Morningside has been using two quarterbacks in Cash Parker and Lennx Brown. McCarty says the Mustangs are relying more on the run game this season.

In recent history this series usually features numerous momentum shifts and there is rarely an early knockout.

Both teams are 8-0 and Morningside coach Steve Ryan says the players always know this game is looming.

Ryan says they enter each game with a plan on how to use both quarterbacks in the opening half then go with the hot hand in the second half.

Ryan says to have a chance the Mustangs must win the turnover battle.

Ryan says he is hearing quite a bit about the chance for bad weather. Saturday’s forecast in Orange City calls for a high of 30 and one to three inches of snow.

No 3. Wartburg hosts Central in key American Rivers Conference clash

Sports

October 26th, 2023 by admin

Ranked third in NCAA III Wartburg can clinch the American Rivers Conference title on Saturday at home against Central. A Dutch victory could throw the title chase into a three way tie involving Coe with two weeks remaining. Wartburg coach Chris Winter says Central is playing its best football since a week three loss to Coe.

Winter says the Dutch defense has also made progress.

Winter says field position will be a big factor in Saturday’s outcome.

Central is 6-1 overall and needs a win to keep its title hopes alive.

That’s Central coach Jeff McMartin. Sophomore Hunter Hoffman has thrown 19 touchdown passes for the Dutch and fellow sophomore Keegan Glover also sees time at quarterback.

Central had four turnovers in its loss to Coe and McMartin says that can’t happen against the Knights.

Lofty expectations for Briar Cliff women’s basketball

Sports

October 26th, 2023 by admin

The Briar Cliff Women’s basketball team is embracing lofty expectations heading into the new season. NAIA Second Team All American Konnor Sudmann, all everything guard Payton Slaughter, and the GPAC’s Co Defensive Player of the year Kennedy Benne return from last year’s team that made the round of 16 at the national championships in Sioux City.

That is second year coach Brian Ortmeyer. Entering her fifth and final season for the Chargers Payton Slaughter will once again be the floor general after averaging 10.8 points per game, 7.1 rebounds, and having handed out over three assists per outing. The decision to play this season was easy for Slaughter acknowledging her “love for the game” but it’s her teammates that brought her back. Players like Sudmann, and Kennedy Benne, who still amaze Slaughter at times.

While Kennedy Benne was the third leading scorer with 11.9 points per game, it’s her defense that is in a league of its own. Benne was the conference co-defensive player of the year after recording 82 steals last season while often being matched with the opposing teams leading scorer. With many of the team’s goals focused on the defensive side of the ball Benne is ready to get to work.

The season begins on November 3rd for Briar Cliff in McPherson, Kansas against Manhattan Christian College.

Reynolds ‘wholeheartedly’ backs investigation of alleged gambling among UI, ISU athletes

News, Sports

October 26th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Governor Kim Reynolds is suggesting it was a tip that led state agents to investigate whether there was illegal gambling among male athletes at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.

The state’s investigation of sports wagering led to misdemeanor charges against several athletes at Iowa and Iowa State and the N-C-A-A sanctions that followed have sidelined players. During a news conference in Des Moines yesterday (Wednesday), Reynolds said no one in state government checked in with her about the investigation.

On August 15th of 2019, it became legal in Iowa to place bets on sporting events, although people originally had to go to one of the 19 state-licensed casinos to register. Since 2021, registration can be done online — but you still must be at least 21 to place sports bets. Reynolds says the gambling by Iowa and Iowa State athletes that’s been revealed is a wake up call.

Under current N-C-A-A rules, college athletes of any age cannot bet on any sport in which the N-C-A-A hosts a championship.

Riverside falls short in Class 1A Regional Championship

Sports

October 25th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Riverside Bulldogs lost to the Ankeny Christian Eagles in three straight sets in the Class 1A Region 4 Championship on Wednesday night. It was a tightly contested match in which Riverside could never grab on to a lead.

In the first set the Eagles took an early lead and continued to pound away at the Bulldog back row collecting kill after kill. In the first set Ankeny Christian totaled 10 kills. Riverside responded back with five kills of their own in the opening set with the help of Sophia Taylor who had 5 kills, 1 ace, 1 dig and Elyssa Amdor with 7 kills, 4 digs, 1 block. Those two helped Riverside create a 6-point run that turned a 19-12 match, into 19-18. Yet, the Eagles stayed composed and outlasted the Bulldogs to take the first set 25-19.

The second set saw more tenacity from each school exchanging points throughout. Ankeny Christian continued to unload kills having 10 in the second set with 4 blocks to stay ahead of a gritty Riverside team. Still set numbers two would end in similar fashion to number one and the Eagles nabbed it 25-18.

In the third set the Eagles had all the momentum with 11 kills, 6 aces, and 5 blocks. They seemed even sharper before and Riverside struggled to keep up. Ankeny Christian won 25-12. It was a tough loss for Riverside Head Coach Brooke Flathers and her team. Tears were shed, but Coach Flathers noted the strength she saw from her players and how well they fought.

With the Regional Championship loss, comes the end of a few seniors playing careers at Riverside and Coach Flathers was grateful for the time they spent with the Bulldogs.

Riverside had a lot of youth on this year’s team and bring back quite an underclassman for next year. Coach Flathers knows that next year’s group is a hard working one.

Ankeny Christian starts the first round of 1A State play October 31st against Newell-Fonda.
