December 14th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Smith threw for 297 yards and two scores, Kansas City shut down Derek Carr and the Oakland offense and the Chiefs beat the Raiders 31-13 on Sunday to end a three-game skid.
Knile Davis had touchdowns running and receiving, and De’Anthony Thomas returned a punt 81 yards for another score as the Chiefs (8-6) got even for a 24-20 loss to Oakland (2-12) last month.

The Chiefs led 10-6 early in the third quarter before scoring three touchdowns in 4 minutes, 42 seconds. The last was a 70-yard throw from Smith to Davis, who had taken over the majority of running back duties after Jamaal Charles took a shot to the head. Charles appeared to pass concussion testing and returned briefly to the game.

Carr finished 27 of 56 for 222 yards, throwing a TD pass in the final minute. The Raiders’ rookie also was sacked four times and fumbled a snap that led to a Kansas City touchdown.

Carroll man shot while deer hunting, Sat. afternoon

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

December 14th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) report a Carroll man was injured Saturday when he was hit by a shotgun slug while deer hunting. 47-year old Eric Winker was part of a hunting group and was helping to drive deer when a shotgun slug fired at a moving deer from another hunter in the party hit him in the abdomen. The group was hunting southwest of Lanesboro in Carroll County when the incident occurred at approximately 2:30-p.m.

Winker was transported to Steward Memorial Hospital in Lake City, transferred to Unity Point Health in Fort Dodge and then life-flighted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. The incident is still under investigation by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Deer hunters are reminded to make sure where other hunters in their party are at all times and to never fire in the direction where other members of the group are expected to be. According to DNR Recreational Safety Officer Jeff Barnes “Most of [the] incidents happen when shots are being fired at moving deer so it is essential to always be aware of your zone of fire.”

VCU tops No. 23 Nothern Iowa in double overtime

December 14th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Treveon Graham scored 21 points, including a tightly contested 3-pointer in the second overtime, and VCU sent No. 23 Northern Iowa to its first loss, 93-87 on Saturday night. Briante Weber added 14 points and Melvin Johnson 12 for the Rams (6-3), who beat a ranked team for the first time since topping Number 16 Saint Louis on March 1st, 2014.

The Panthers (9-1), looking to tie the best start in school history, got a career-best 27 points from Wes Washpun. But he fouled out when Weber drew a charge call with 49 seconds to play, taking away the Panthers’ best offensive option.

Matt Bohannon added 18 points, including a 3-pointer to force the second overtime, for the Panthers. Seth Tuttle, UNI’s leading scorer with a 16-point average, managed only five in only 21 minutes of the fast-paced game.

Iowa State defensive lineman Cousin suspended

Sports

December 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State defensive lineman Devlyn Cousin has been suspended indefinitely from the team after being arrested and charged with simple domestic assault. A police report shows Cousin was arrested late Friday night on charges of domestic assault and obstruction of emergency communication.

In a written statement Saturday, Cyclones football coach Paul Rhoads said he was aware of the charges filed against Cousin and that Cousin had been suspended indefinitely under the school’s student-athlete discipline policy as the school gathers more information on the case.

Ames police tell The Des Moines Register that Cousin was arrested for pushing his girlfriend to the ground as she called 911. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Cousin played in nine games this year, racking up 12 tackles.
