IOWA CITY, Iowa – Three University of Iowa women’s soccer players received Big Ten Conference postseason recognition on Friday.

Fifth-year captain Samantha Cary was named Second Team All-Big Ten. Freshman Sofia Bush was an All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection and redshirt junior Zoë Bessert earned Big Ten Sportsmanship Team honors.

Cary won three Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week awards in 2023, the only conference player to earn that recognition multiple times this season.

Playing a team-high 1,467 minutes, Cary leads a Hawkeye defense that posted 10 clean sheets in the regular season.

Iowa’s .588 shutout percentage ranks second in the conference and is the program’s best since the 2014 season. The Hawkeyes allowed just two goals through the first 12 games of the year. Cary also has one goal and one assist.

Cary is a four-time Big Ten preseason honoree and three-time league all-academic selection.

Bush has been an instant-impact player for Iowa this season as a true freshman. Making 11 starts and participating in all 17 regular season games, the Marion, Iowa, native earned five points offensively at the midfielder position.

Bessert participated in six games this season, making one start on Senior Day against Southeast Missouri State. A leader on and off the pitch, she drilled a goal on her lone career shot, a penalty kick against Nebraska.

Eighth-seed Iowa (9-4-4, 3-4-3) opens Big Ten Tournament play at top-seed Michigan State (12-3-3, 7-1-2) in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday, Oct. 29. Kickoff is set for Noon (CT). The winner will advance to the semifinals on Nov. 2, with the championship match to be played on Nov. 5. The semifinals and championship match will be played at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio.

This week, SiriusXM and the Big 12 Conference are teaming up to launch Big 12 Nation, a weekly show on SiriusXM Big 12 Radio that will showcase the Conference’s Olympic Sports, providing coverage of Big 12 student-athletes and teams across the Conference. Big 12 Nation will include game highlights, student-athlete interviews, and in-depth coverage of all the action taking place across the Big 12.

“As the popularity of Olympic Sports continues to grow, it’s critically important that our media platforms and their coverage grow alongside them,” said Commissioner Yormark. “We are thrilled to work with SiriusXM to bolster coverage of Olympic Sports through Big 12 Nation – our student-athletes have incredible stories and successes on and off the field, and we look forward to those being told.”

“The Big 12 Conference has so many great student-athletes and teams that are competing in sports that are not covered by many other outlets,” said Eric Spitz, SiriusXM’s VP of Sports Programming. “There are Big 12 fans around the country who love their Big 12 football and basketball teams, but also want more coverage of the conference’s Olympic Sports. We’re excited and proud to work with the Big 12 to deliver that coverage to those fans on SiriusXM Big 12 Radio.”

Open crop fields, cool weather could signal good hunting as pheasant season opens

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

October 27th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa’s pheasant hunting season opens tomorrow morning and state officials say there could be 50- to 60-thousand hunters in the fields. Todd Bogenshutz, a biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the state’s pheasant numbers appear to be rising. “Our roadside counts showed populations were a little bit higher than they were a year ago from a statewide perspective,” Bogenshutz says. “Looking at the crop reports this week, it looks like over 75% of the soybeans have been harvested and we’re going to be over 50% of the corn out, certainly by this coming weekend.”

Fields that are clear of crops mean less cover and better hunting. The forecast calls for cooler weather on opening day, with highs only in the 30s and 40s. Bogenshutz says lower temperatures may also mean better hunting. “A lot of times, our openers can be warm and that can be pretty hard on the hunters and dogs,” Bogenschutz says. “It’s basically the first time out for a lot of hunters and dogs, and so when we’re warm, 70s and 80s, usually that can cause some stress.” There are no significant changes in the hunting rules from last year, he says, and one of the most frequent questions he hears is about the wearing of blaze orange.

Pheasant hunters. (DNR photo)

“Our upland bird hunters are required to wear at least one article that’s at least 50% blaze orange, whether that’s a hat or a jacket or a vest. We just want everybody to be safe,” Bogenschutz says. “If you’re hunting with a group, and doing drive hunts or whatever, just have a game plan, know where everybody is, where safe shooting zones are.”

Non-toxic shot is required in some areas, including wetlands, and he says to always get permission before hunting on private property. The season runs through January 10th. Find more information at www.iowadnr.gov.

Iowa Native Payton Sandfort Named to Small Forward of the Year Watch List

Sports

October 27th, 2023 by admin

(Iowa City, IA) – The University of Iowa may be known for its women’s basketball achievements so far, but we cannot forget about the men’s side of the floor. Payton Sandfort has been named to the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Preseason Watch List. Stanford is one of three student-athletes from the Big Ten on the list.

The Iowa native is one of twenty players announced in the selection for the watch list this season. The list will be narrowed down in January to 10 players, and to five in February.

Last season, Sandfort averaged 10.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He also had 59 three-point field goals during the season which are the second-most for the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes begin their season on October 30th in an exhibition game against Quincy. They begin their regular season on November 7th versus North Dakota.

West Bend-Mallard relying on Work Ethic to compete with CAM

Sports

October 26th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The (7-2) West Bend-Mallard Wolverines face the undefeated CAM Cougars Friday night in the second round of 8 player playoffs. The road for West-Bend Mallard has seen a few stumbles losing to Bishop Garrigan 36-31 and Remsen St. Marys 34-18. Since those two losses, the Wolverines have been on a six-game winning streak. Their last content was a well-earned 64-26 victory over Riceville. One of the major keys for West Bend-Mallard’s success is the toughness instilled in all of the players from Head Coach Tony Wirtz.

Another key component which has tremendously helped the Wolverines score through their opponents is the athleticism of senior quarterback Landon Montag. Montag in the pocket plays well going for 38-75, 792 yards, 11 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. His legs on the other hand are deadly considering he’s had 163 carries, 1346 rushing yards, 8.3 yards per carry, and 26 touchdowns. Coach Wirtz takes pride in his quarterbacks’ approach to the game.

Still having such a versatile quarterback is not a big enough reason for Coach Wirtz to take this matchup lightly. CAM has continually dominated teams, only allowing one opponent to score at least 20 points all year. The Cougar defense has forced over 30 turnovers and remains quick with every snap. The pose a tough challenge to this Wolverines team and Coach Wirtz is candid about it.

Facing an undefeated opponent in their own house during the playoffs is a stout challenge to face. Yet, the Wolverines still have hope with the effort and work they’ve put in all season.

KJAN brings you the coverage starting at 6:30pm with the pregame show and kickoff starts at 7:00pm.
