With La Stella on DL, could Bryant make Cubs’ debut Friday?

Sports

April 15th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — Could Kris Byrant make his Chicago Cubs’ debut as early as Friday? The Cubs placed infielder Tommy La Stella on the disabled list Tuesday because of right ribcage inflammation and recalled left-hander Zac Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa.

Chicago manager Joe Maddon said “it’s possible” the Cubs could add an infielder for Friday’s game against San Diego. Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein didn’t discount the possibility another infielder could join the team by the time the homestand ends Sunday.

Asked about Bryant potentially making his debut this weekend, Epstein said he didn’t “want to speculate.” “It depends on what’s happening with the roster, what’s happening with his development,” Epstein said. “We don’t know yet.”

Garza, Brewers spoil Cardinals home opener, 5-4

Sports

April 14th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Garza overcame five walks to earn his first career win in St. Louis and Carlos Gomez had two hits and an RBI for the Milwaukee Brewers, who spoiled the Cardinals’ home opener with a 5-4 victory on Monday. Adam Wainwright (1-1) started his fourth opener at 10-year-old Busch Stadium and gave up five runs — three earned — in seven innings. Jhonny Peralta had two hits, including a two-run double off Jeremy Jeffress that cut the deficit to a run in the seventh.

Francisco Rodriguez earned his first save, helping himself with the defensive play of the game when he reached behind his head and snared Peralta’s liner leading off the ninth. Play was sloppy with Milwaukee shortstop Jean Segura and Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong committing two errors apiece.

Masters champ to play in John Deere Classic

Sports

April 13th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Golf’s newly crowned Masters champion will play in the John Deere Classic near the Quad Cities in July. Twenty-one year old Jordan Spieth tied a Masters’ record by finishing 18 under par. He won the John Deere Classic as a teenager back in 2013.
John Deere Classic Tournament director Clair Peterson says they are excited to have the reigning Masters champ as part of the field.

Peterson gave Spieth a sponsor’s exemption to play in the John Deere Classic when he was 18 years old. Over the years the John Deere Classic has given sponsor exemptions to players who Peterson feels will have a bright future on tour.

This year’s John Deere Classic is July ninth through the 12th.

Iowa to Host Pitt, Minnesota at Night

Sports

April 13th, 2015 by Jim Field

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa will play its first night games at Kinnick Stadium in three years with a pair of primetime contests this fall.

The Big Ten Network and the league announced Monday that the Hawkeyes will host Pittsburgh on Sept. 19 and Minnesota on Nov. 14 in primetime.

It will be the first time Iowa has hosted multiple night games in the same season. Since Kinnick Stadium is one of the few nationally without permanent lights, temporary lighting will be brought it.

Iowa last played a night game at home in 2012, when it was blasted by Penn State.
