Cubs manager Maddon ejected for arguing with plate umpire

Sports

May 7th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the sixth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. It appeared Maddon had already been tossed before coming onto the field to complain to plate umpire D.J. Reyburn during an at-bat by Starlin Castro to start the sixth. Castro ended up flying out to right in a game the Cubs led 5-2.

Chicago entered with a season-worst four-game losing streak. Maddon has been ejected twice this year. The other came April 17 against San Diego.

Cubs activate pitcher Justin Grimm from DL

Sports

May 7th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have activated right-hander Justin Grimm from the 15-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa. Outfielder Junior Lake was optioned to Iowa and right-hander Anthony Varvaro was designated for assignment Wednesday. Varvaro was claimed off waivers from Boston on Sunday and added to the 25-man roster Tuesday but did not pitch.

Grimm (right forearm inflammation) made one rehab appearance with a scoreless inning Monday for Iowa at Nashville. Grimm made the opening day roster for the second straight season but had not pitched in the majors this year. Grimm was 5-2 with a 3.78 ERA in 73 relief appearance last year with Chicago in his first full season in the majors.

This is the second call-up this season for Szczur, who made the opening day roster and was optioned to Iowa on April 19.

Cardinals division lead shrinks w/a Cubs win Wed. night

Sports

May 7th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have seen their division lead shrink for the first time since April 27th. The Redbirds had won eight in a row before Anthony Rizzo belted a solo homer and added a two-run double in the Chicago Cubs’ 6-5 triumph at St. Louis Wednesday night. Kris Bryant and Starlin Castro delivered RBI singles in the top of the first and Jorge Soler drove in the deciding run with an eighth-inning single.

Jon Lester gave up one earned run and seven hits in seven innings as the second-place Cubs pulled within 5 ½ games of the Redbirds in the NL Central. Jhonny Peralta hit a solo homer and Yadier Molina had two RBIs, but the Cardinals fell to 20-7.

Cardinals shutting down Walden for 6-10 weeks

Sports

May 7th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals setup man Jordan Walden will be shut down for six to 10 weeks for a strained muscle in his right shoulder. The 27-year-old was placed on the 15-day disabled list last week and the decision was made Wednesday after a second opinion. The Cardinals say the injury will not require surgery.

Walden was acquired from the Atlanta Braves in November along with outfielder Jason Heyward and has a 0.87 ERA in 12 games.
