De La Rosa, LeMahieu lead Rockies past Cardinals 4-3

Sports

June 10th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Jorge De La Rosa pitched seven strong innings to tie the Rockies’ franchise mark for wins, D.J. LeMahieu hit a tie-breaking RBI double in the seventh, and Colorado hung on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Tuesday night following another rain delay at Coors Field.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the seventh, pinch-hitter Wilin Rosario, who was batting for De La Rosa, singled off Michael Wacha. One out later, LeMahieu doubled to the centerfield wall, scoring Rosario. Wacha (8-2) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts but gave up four runs on nine hits in 6 2-3 innings. De La Rosa (3-2) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out eight in notching his 72nd career win with Colorado, tying Aaron Cook’s team record.

*********

DENVER (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have placed left fielder Matt Holliday on the 15-day disabled list with a right quadriceps strain. The Cardinals recalled right-hander Miguel Socolovich from Triple-A Memphis. Holliday was injured charging for Carlos Gonzalez’s fly ball in the second inning of Monday’s loss to the Colorado Rockies. Holliday tripped and fell forward on his right knee. He grabbed his knee while on the ground. After a few minutes, he stood and walked off the field. Holliday, who is hitting .303 with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 52 games this season, is on the disabled list for the first time since July 2013.

New Iowa State coach Steve Prohm embraces high expectations

Sports

June 9th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – New Iowa State coach Steve Prohm is succeeding a man who remains so beloved in Ames that he’s been nicknamed “The Mayor” for decades. And the roster that Fred Hoiberg left behind before bolting for the Chicago Bulls is expected to compete for a national championship.

Prohm, who was introduced Tuesday as Hoiberg’s replacement, is facing one of the most unique challenges in college basketball. He’s following in the footsteps of an enormously popular coach but inheriting arguably the most talented team Iowa State has ever had.

Tulowitzki powers Rockies to 11-3 win over Cardinals

Sports

June 9th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki hit a three-run homer in the first and David Hale threw seven effective innings, lifting the Colorado Rockies to an 11-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Hale (2-0) was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to make a spot start and retired the opening nine batters before surrendering a solo homer to Kolten Wong. The right-hander allowed three runs and struck out seven.

Nolan Arenado added a two-run homer as the Rockies roughed up John Lackey (4-4), who surrendered 10 runs — eight earned — and 12 hits in four innings. His ERA rose from 2.93 to 3.74. St. Louis had a scary moment in the second when left fielder Matt Holliday fell awkwardly trying to chase down a bloop double by Carlos Gonzalez. Holliday grabbed his right leg and lay on the ground before gingerly walking off. The team said he suffered a right quadriceps strain.
