TCU takes advantage of LSU starter’s struggles in 10-3 win

Sports

June 15th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Preston Morrison limited LSU to five hits and a run in seven innings, and TCU capitalized on LSU starter Jared Poche’s stunning middle-inning struggles in a 10-3 victory at the College World Series on Sunday. The Horned Frogs (50-13), in the CWS for the second straight year and third time overall, will play a Bracket 2 winners game against Cal State Fullerton or Vanderbilt on Tuesday night. The Tigers (53-11) meet one of those teams in an elimination game that afternoon.

Morrison (12-2) earned his first win in nine career starts in the NCAA tournament. The Chicago Cubs’ eighth-round draft pick struck out five, walked none and retired the last 12 batters he faced.

Fullerton leads Vandy 3-0 in CWS game suspended by weather

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Heavy rain and lightning forced the suspension of the Cal State Fullerton-Vanderbilt game at the College World Series on Sunday night. Play will resume at 11:05-a.m. Central Time today (Monday) with the Titans leading the defending national champion Commodores 3-0 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The weather disrupted a magnificent performance in progress by Cal State Fullerton ace Thomas Eshelman. Eshelman was on the mound when the teams were pulled off the field because of lightning near TD Ameritrade Park. The two-time Big West pitcher of the year had allowed four hits, walked none and struck out eight.

Fullerton scored against Vandy’s Carson Fulmer on Taylor Bryant’s RBI single in the third and on a wild pitch and Josh Vargas’ base hit in the fifth.

CHICAGO (AP) — Starlin Castro drove in the winning run for the second straight night with an RBI single in the 11th inning to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday night. Chris Coghlan doubled just out of the reach of left fielder Kristopher Negron with out in the 11th inning and scored the winning run on Castro’s single to left-center off reliever Burke Badenhop (0-2).

Chicago took three of four in this series. Castro’s RBI single in the ninth gave the Cubs the win Saturday night. Joey Hamilton had a career-high five stolen bases — the most in a game since Jacoby Ellsbury stole five on May 30, 2013, and also tied a Reds record. Hamilton leads the majors with 31 steals. Brian Schlitter (1-2), called up from Triple-A Iowa before the game, got two outs in the 11th for the victory.

Gators’ 11-run inning ties record, fuels 15-3 win over Miami

Sports

June 14th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Florida scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to tie a College World Series record, and defeated Miami 15-3 on Saturday night, the Hurricanes’ most lopsided loss in their long and proud postseason history. The Gators’ outburst broke open a surprisingly sloppy game and ended with Florida having turned a 2-1 deficit into a 10-run lead on nine hits off Andrew Suarez and two relievers.

Florida (50-16) advanced to a Bracket 1 winners game against Virginia on Monday night. Miami (49-16) and Arkansas will play an elimination game that afternoon. Logan Shore (10-6) scattered seven hits and struck out six in five innings for the win. Suarez (9-2) took the loss in a 3 1/3-inning outing that matched his second shortest of the season.

Bullpen finishes off Cardinals’ 3-2 win over Royals

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Call-up Tyler Lyons had a solid outing and Mark Reynolds hit the go-ahead homer in the fifth inning for the St. Louis Cardinals, who beat the Kansas City Royals for the second straight day, 3-2 on Saturday. Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez homered for the Royals, who took two of three from the Cardinals at home last month and will be trying to avoid a sweep in the finale.

Matt Carpenter and Jason Heyward each added an RBI for St. Louis, which is a major league-best 41-21 overall and 24-7 at home. The Cardinals used five relievers over the last four innings to hold a one-run lead with Trevor Rosenthal getting the last four outs for his league-leading 21st save in 22 chances.

The Royals’ eighth did not lack for dramatics. Heyward battled the sun to snare Kendrys Morales’ liner while falling on his backside and Rosenthal rallied from a 3-0 count to get Gordon on an infield popup with two on for the third out.

The Cavaliers, a No. 3 regional seed and the lowest seed to make it to Omaha, improved to 6-0 in the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas (40-24) tied it at 3 in the fifth on Andrew Benintendi’s nation-leading 20th home run.
