ST. LOUIS (AP) — Randal Grichuk homered and rookie Tim Cooney threw seven solid innings to earn his first major league win, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. St. Louis improved to 6-1 since the All-Star break and pushed its home record to an MLB-best 35-12. Meanwhile, the Braves have lost their last six road games.

Grichuk hit a two-run homer in the second inning for the second night in row. His 11th of the season came off rookie Manny Banuelos (1-2), who gave up six hits and four earned runs in five-plus innings. Cooney (1-0) gave up five hits and two earned runs in an efficient 74-pitch stint. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Kevin Siegrist retired the Braves in the ninth for his fifth save. He struck out Jonny Gomes with two on to end the game.

CHICAGO (AP) – Olympic champion gymnast and Iowa native Shawn Johnson threw out a ceremonial first ball at Wrigley Field – and wound up with quite a catch. Johnson was walking off the field Friday before the Chicago Cubs hosted Philadelphia when she was surprised by longtime boyfriend Andrew East, a rookie long snapper for the Kansas City Chiefs.

East dropped to one knee near home plate and presented the 2008 gold medalist with a diamond engagement ring. A stunned Johnson put her hands over her mouth, bobbed her head up and down, then jumped into his arms. Later, she put her feelings onto her Twitter feed. “Today the love of my life asked me to be his forever.AND I SAID YES!” she posted.

The 23-year-old Johnson won the balance beam title at the Beijing Olympics. The next year, she won the title on ABC-TV’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith has been suspended the first three games of the regular season by the NFL after pleading guilty to a drunken driving charge earlier this year. Smith, who was given two years’ probation, is entering a contract year after one of the best seasons of his career. He will miss games against Houston, Denver and Green Bay before returning for the Chiefs’ game against Cincinnati in Week 4. The 28-year-old Smith started all 16 games for Kansas City last season.

Under the NFL substance abuse policy, first-time offenders receive two-game suspensions. But there can be additional discipline depending on the circumstances, and Smith was pulled over by police last year after his car struck and broke a light pole.

Missouri Valley inks extension with ESPN

July 24th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The Missouri Valley Conference has signed a ten-year extension to its media rights deal with ESPN that will include increased exposure on the network’s on-line platform ESPN3. MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin says the new deal will lead to more than 800 Valley events beiing produced on an annual basis.

Elgin says the new deal will have no impact on local and regional television deals for Missouri Valley basketball. Drake University Associate Dean David Wright says the new deal also opens up educational opportunities because the on-line content will rely heavily on student run productions.

Sports

July 24th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — John Lackey threw seven strong innings after a shaky beginning, Trevor Rosenthal escaped his own jam in the ninth and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Kansas City Royal 4-3 on Thursday night. Randal Grichuk and Matt Carpenter hit two-run homers as the Cardinals won in the makeup of a rainout last month.

As in the originally scheduled game, St. Louis and Kansas City led their league in wins and Lackey (9-5) and Chris Young (8-6) were the scheduled starters. Rosenthal, pitching for the third straight day, took over to begin the ninth with a 4-2  lead. Alex Rios led off with a single and Omar Infante followed with a triple.

The Royals went on to put runners on second and third with no outs, but Rosenthal held on for his 30th save in 32 chances. Mike Moustakas grounded out to end it.

Cardinals’ Piscotty scratched from lineup with stiff neck

Sports

July 24th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Stephen Piscotty was scratched from the St. Louis Cardinals lineup Thursday, due to a stiff neck. Dan Johnson replaced Piscotty playing first base and batted eighth against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. Piscotty was 2 for 8 with a double in two starts, the first appearances of his career since his contract was purchased from Triple-A Memphis.

Johnson, whose contract was purchased from Memphis earlier this month, was 2 for 10 in six games. Mark Reynolds, who has gotten the bulk of playing time at first base, was out of the lineup. He entered the game 2 for 14 in his career against Royals starter Chris Young.
