ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have released running back Cyrus Gray, who tore his ACL last November, in what coach Andy Reid described Wednesday as a “football decision.” The former sixth-round pick ran for 99 yards and a touchdown in 35 games, but was also a valuable special teams player. His departure leaves Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, Keshawn Hill, Anthony Sherman, Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West among running backs on the roster.

While Eric Berry’s return from cancer treatment dominated the first day of training camp, there was some other injury news. Wide receiver Chris Conley strained his knee during the workout, and linebacker Ramik Wilson was placed on the non-football injury list with a back strain. Quarterback Tyler Bray worked out with the trainers. He’s returning from an ACL injury.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Joey Votto hit a three-run home run in support of Mike Leake, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 on Tuesday night. Votto is the hottest hitter in the majors since the All-Star break, batting .561. He also walked, singled and doubled, giving him an NL-leading 37 multihit games.

Leake (9-5) allowed four hits in eight innings to win his fourth straight start. He allowed just two earned runs in his last 30 innings for a 0.60 ERA. Jaime Garcia (3-4), activated from the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day, made his first start since June 2 and gave up three runs and four hits in six innings. He is 10-3 against the Reds, including 7-1 at home.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry has been cleared by the Kansas City Chiefs’ medical staff and his doctors to return to the practice field after undergoing treatment for lymphoma. The Chiefs said in a brief statement late Tuesday that Berry would join quarterbacks, rookies and injured players in the first day of training camp Wednesday at Missouri Western.

Berry was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease last December, shortly after complaining of pain in his chest following a game against Oakland. He was treated at Emory University in Atlanta and went through the final round of it in June. Berry underwent a battery of tests Tuesday, when rookies and select veterans reported to training camp. He was cleared to take the field late in the day.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs defensive tackle Dontari Poe will miss all of training camp and could miss part of the season after the Pro Bowl run-stuffer had surgery last week on his ailing back. Poe first hurt his back during offseason workouts, but coach Andy Reid said Tuesday that he aggravated the injury training at home. Poe was diagnosed with a herniated disc and had surgery July 15, and trainer Rick Burkholder said he will be out indefinitely.

Poe is coming off his second straight Pro Bowl. The 6-foot-3, 346-pound tackle had a career-best six sacks last season while anchoring the middle of the Chiefs defensive line. Reid said that Jaye Howard will take over his position in training camp, though Mike DeVito and sixth-round pick Rakeem Nunez-Roches could also compete for time.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa says it wants to spend up to $45 million on improvements to Kinnick Stadium and about $85 million on a student-housing project. The university outlined plans for the new projects in a document sent to the Board of Regents. The UI will provide more detail at a regents meeting next week.

The university outlined plans to spend $35 million to $45 million on renovations to the stadium, focused on the north end zone. Improvements would include new suites, restroom upgrades and expanded food options.

The UI also wants to spend about $85 million on a student-housing project near the athletic complex that would be financed through athletic department and dormitory revenue bonds.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have activated left-hander Jaime Garcia from the 15-day disabled list to start against the Cincinnati Reds. Right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Garcia was 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts, the last coming on June 24 at Miami.
