Wacha, Piscotty lead Cardinals past Padres 10-3

Sports

August 23rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

San Diego (AP) — Michael Wacha pitched six solid innings and Stephen Piscotty homered twice and drove in five runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals avoid a three-game sweep by beating the San Diego Padres 10-3 Sunday. Jason Heyward had three hits as St. Louis averted getting swept for the first time this season. Wacha (15-4) got his fourth straight win, allowing one run and four hits while striking out three and walking two.

After being shut out on Saturday night, the Cardinals scored four in the first against rookie Colin Rea, who was making his third major-league start. San Diego made two errors in the first inning and the Cardinals capitalized with three hits, including Piscotty’s two-run triple.

Rea (2-1) struggled early and made a throwing error in the first that contributed to the Cardinals’ rally. The 25-year-old Rea gave up five runs — four earned — over four innings.

“I have decided to step away from the Iowa State men’s basketball program,” Noskowiak said. “I wish Coach Prohm, my former coaches and teammates the best of luck in the future and I appreciate the opportunity they gave me to be a part of their team.”

Molina’s homer pushes Cardinals past Giants 4-3

Sports

August 20th, 2015 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Yadier Molina’s 100th career home run in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a tie and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Molina added an RBI single in the first and rookie Stephen Piscotty homered in the third for St. Louis, which took two of three from the NL West-contending Giants. The Cardinals are 77-43 overall and 46-19 at home, both tops in the majors.

Kevin Siegrist (5-0) allowed a walk in the eighth and Trevor Rosenthal earned his 38th save in 40 chances, striking out pinch-hitting pitcher Madison Bumgarner to end it. Siegrist won both of the games in the series and the Cardinals wrapped up a 6-3 homestand with three 2-1 series wins and have won six consecutive series overall.

Molina lined an 0-1 breaking ball from Hunter Strickland (2-3) into the left field stands for his fourth homer of the year.

Vogelsong, Bumgarner help Giants beat Cardinals 2-0

Sports

August 19th, 2015 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Ryan Vogelsong pitched six innings of two-hit ball and ace Madison Bumgarner keyed a seventh-inning rally with his first career pinch hit, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Brandon Crawford doubled leading off the fifth for the Giants’ first hit when left fielder Brandon Moss couldn’t quite hold onto his drive down the line near both walls. He also had a run-scoring groundout in the sixth for the first run.

The Giants have won six of eight and handed the Cardinals, who got a strong bounce-back outing from Lance Lynn, just their 19th home loss compared with 45 wins.

Iowa State’s Tsalmpouris turning pro

Sports

August 18th, 2015 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State says basketball player Georgios Tsalmpouris is turning pro.

Tsalmpouris, a 7-foot-1 center from Katerini, Greece, was a late addition to the Cyclones roster last season.

Tsalmpouris was a project for former coach Fred Hoiberg. He played in just eight games as a freshman in 2014-15, averaging 1.4 points. The move was expected after Tsalmpouris returned to Greece this summer.

Tsalmpouris’s departure frees up a scholarship for new coach Steve Prohm, who will lose four key contributors following next season.
