Molina exits with thumb sprain as Cardinals beat Cubs 4-3

Sports

September 20th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — Yadier Molina exited with a sprained left thumb suffered as the Cubs ran themselves out of late scoring chances, and the St. Louis Cardinals ended Chicago’s five-game winning streak and avoided a sweep with a 4-3 win Sunday. The Cardinals moved six games ahead of Chicago in the NL Central. The Pirates were still playing Sunday and are 4 1/2 back of St. Louis.

Molina was injured tagging out Anthony Rizzo on a sacrifice-fly attempt in the eighth. Right fielder Jason Heyward had the assist, throwing out Rizzo on Addison Russell’s no-out, bases-loaded fly. Starlin Castro started the ninth with a single, but pinch-runner Quintin Berry was thrown out trying to steal second by Molina’s replacement, Tony Cruz. Trevor Rosenthal then struck out Jorge Soler and got Kyle Schwarber to ground out for his 46th save.

Carlos Martinez (14-7) pitched into the seventh. Rookies Tommy Pham and Stephen Piscotty homered. Jon Lester (10-11) allowed four runs in six innings.

Koehn kicks Iowa to last second win over Pitt

Sports

September 20th, 2015 by admin

(Iowa City) — Iowa’s Marshall Koehn kicked a 57-yard field goal as time expired to push Iowa past Pittsburgh 27-24 Saturday, giving the Hawkeyes their first 3-0 start in six years.

C.J. Beathard had 258 yards passing for Iowa, which drove 31 yards in under a minute to set up Koehn’s winning kick.

Tyler Boyd’s 8-yard TD catch with 52 seconds tied the game at 24-all for Pitt (2-1).

Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi called timeout to ice Koehn just before he kicked his first attempt, which was well short.

But Koehn’s second try sailed straight through the uprights to give Iowa one of its most thrilling wins in years.

Nate Peterman had 219 yards passing and two touchdowns in his first start for Pitt (2-1).

Cyclones drop 2OT game at Toledo

Sports

September 20th, 2015 by admin

(Toledo) — Iowa State kicker Cole Netten missed a 32-yard field goal as time expired in regulation, and Toledo took advantage of it in beating the Cyclones 30-23 in double overtime.

Brian Peavy’s diving interception with 2:36 remaining in the game gave the Cyclones a perfect chance to win the game, but Mike Warren fumbled it right back to Toledo 86 seconds later at the 15-yard-line.

The two field goal kickers exchanged field goals during the first overtime session, but Toledo punched in a touchdown in the second OT. Iowa State’s last-gasp, fourth-and-goal play on their next possession resulted in nothing when Sam Richardson was sacked by Tre James.

The Cyclones (1-2), who were averaging just 70 yards rushing in their first two games got 126 yards on 21 carries from Warren and had 207 as a team. However, they were penalized 14 times for 113 yards.

Atlantic prepares for district road test at ADM

Sports

September 18th, 2015 by admin

The Atlantic Trojan football team (1-2) goes on the road this week to face the ADM Tigers (2-1) in Adel at 7:00pm.  The Trojans will try to bounce back from a 56-6 loss at home in week 3 to a tough Glenwood team.  The injury bug hasn’t been kind to the Trojans as they have already lost two players to season ending injuries and starting Quarterback Kyle Nelson was injured in last week’s contest and his return is questionable.  Sophomore Jaxson Eden will step into the Quarterback role after filling in part of the game last week. Despite the injuries Atlantic Head Coach Eric Waldstein feels like the Trojans match-up well against the Tigers in both size and athleticism.

The ADM Tigers return last season’s starting Quarterback Frank Weiland whom has had mixed success throwing the ball in ADM’s quick paced offense.  Weiland played well against the Trojans last season throwing for over 170 yards and 2 touchdowns but the Tigers do have a tendency to turn the ball over as Weiland has thrown 5 interceptions on the young season.  Coach Waldstein hopes the Trojans can take advantage of mistakes to get the win.

ADM head coach Mike Whisner expects a good game against the Trojans and hopes his team gets off to a fast start.  The Tigers struggled in their first district game of the year against Dallas Center-Grimes and Coach Whisner knows every district game is important and thinks his team will be ready for the next match-up.

Coach Waldstein thinks the Trojans defense will be able to show their strengths against ADM’s quick passing attack and also feels the Trojans can have some success with similar plays on the offensive side of the ball.

We will have coverage of the game tonight on KJAN.  Chris Parks and Seth Christensen will bring you the broadcast with pregame at 6:30pm and kickoff at 7:00pm.  You can listen to the game on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, or on the KJAN mobile app.  You can also watch a live video webcast of the game on KJANTV.  Also listen in at 4:45pm for our extended talk with Coach Waldstein on Trojan Preview and catch our high school football pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm.
