Garcia dazzles as Cardinals whip Brewers 5-1

Sports

September 27th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaime Garcia worked eight dominant innings after getting a big early cushion, and the St. Louis Cardinals maintained their three-game lead in the NL Central with a 5-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night. The Cardinals shaved their magic number to five for clinching the division after second-place Pittsburgh beat the Cubs 4-0 earlier in the day.

Matt Holliday had a pair of RBI doubles, and Kolten Wong’s two-run single capped a four-run first against rookie Tyler Wagner (0-1). Matt Carpenter was removed after five innings with left hip tightness for precautionary reasons, the latest setback for the team. Earlier in the day, 14-game winner Carlos Martinez was shut down for the rest of the season with a strained right shoulder.

Garcia (10-5) allowed a run on seven hits, retiring 10 in a row at one point. The lefty struck out eight with no walks and reached double figures in victories for the first time since 2011.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jordan Canzeri ran for 115 yards and tied a school record with four touchdowns as Iowa trounced North Texas 62-16 Saturday for its fourth straight win. C.J. Beathard completed his first 15 passes and had 278 yards for the Hawkeyes (4-0), who open Big Ten play next week at Wisconsin after topping 60 points for the first time since 2002.

Iowa set its season high for points before halftime, racing out to a 35-13 lead. Canzeri’s final TD run put Iowa ahead 42-16. The win was the 119th at Iowa for coach Kirk Ferentz, matching former Badgers coach Barry Alvarez for victories by a Big Ten coach. Andrew McNulty had 137 yards passing and an interception for the Mean Green (0-3), who lost their third straight by double digits.

Davis’ HR boosts Brewers past Cardinals 4-3

Sports

September 25th, 2015 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Khris Davis homered off Trevor Rosenthal leading off the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Friday night.

The loss cut the Cardinals’ NL Central lead to three games over Pittsburgh with eight games remaining.

Rosenthal (2-3) was St. Louis’ eighth reliever after Carlos Martinez lasted just seven pitches before leaving with tightness in his pitching shoulder.

Davis’ 24th homer was just the second allowed by the St. Louis closer; the other was by Pittsburgh’s Jung Ho Kang on May 3 in St. Louis. Davis was 1 for 5 with four strikeouts against Rosenthal before lining a 1-1 fastball into the right-field bullpen.

Will Smith (7-2) got the Brewers out of danger in the eighth and Francisco Rodriguez earned his 36th save in 38 chances.

Milwaukee has lost 12 of 17 against the Cardinals this season and 53 of the last 77 meetings.
