Lanning leads Iowa State past Texas 24-0 in first start

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Joel Lanning threw a touchdown pass in his first start and freshman Mike Warren carved out another 100-yard rushing game, leading Iowa State to a much-needed 24-0 victory over Texas on Saturday night. Lanning, a sophomore who replaced senior Sam Richardson, struggled at times with his passing but did enough with his feet for the Cyclones (3-5, 2-3 Big 12) to break a three-game losing streak.

He led a 66-yard scoring drive that gave the Cyclones a quick early lead and floated a perfectly thrown pass to Dondre Daley in the left corner of the end zone to make it 17-0 in the third quarter. Texas (3-5, 2-3) had upset Oklahoma and dominated Kansas State in its two previous outings with an improved running game. But the Longhorns struggled to get anything going in this one and never advanced past the Iowa State 47 until the final 90 seconds.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Desmond King had an 88-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and 10th-ranked Iowa beat Maryland 31-15 Saturday for its eighth straight victory to start the season. Akrum Wadley, LeShun Daniels and Derrick Mitchell had touchdown runs for the Hawkeyes (8-0, 4-0). They’ll enter November unbeaten for just the second time in 17 seasons under coach Kirk Ferentz.

Iowa used a touchdown late in the second quarter to lead 21-0 at halftime. The Hawkeyes defense took over from there, and King’s return put the Hawkeyes ahead 31-7 with 7:38 left. Will Likely had a 100-yard kickoff return for the Terrapins (2-6, 0-4), who threw for just 74 yards.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – Aaron Bailey threw a touchdown pass and ran for another to lead Northern Iowa to a 20-7 victory over South Dakota on Saturday. Bailey was 16-of-27 passing for 231 yards with 44 yards rushing to lead the Panthers (4-4, 2-3 Missouri Valley), who have won consecutive games since snapping a three-game losing skid.

Ryan Saeger was 11-of-21 for 133 yards passing with a first quarter touchdown to lead South Dakota (4-4, 2-3).  Bailey threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Braden Lehman, and bullied in for a 1-yard TD run to cap an eight play, 83-yard drive to give the Panthers a 14-7 halftime lead. Michael Schmadeke kicked field goals of 48 and 50 yards in the third quarter to cap the scoring. The Coyotes had just 187 yards of offense with two fumbles and an interception.

MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) – Shavi Bash kicked a 23-yard field goal in the third overtime to lead Morehead State to a 38-35 victory over Drake on Saturday.  Morehead State (5-3, 4-1 Pioneer League) has won five its past six, including four straight at home. Austin Gahafer was 22 of 40 for 229 yards passing with two touchdowns before coming out with an injury midway through the fourth quarter. Jack Sherry replaced Gahafer and threw for 95 yards with fourth quarter and overtime touchdown passes for the Eagles.

Andy Rice was 22-of-38 passing for 220 yards with three touchdowns to lead Drake (4-5, 3-3).  Rice’s 5-yard pass was tipped in the end zone and intercepted by Trey Watkins, and Bash’s 37-yard field goal attempt was blocked in the first overtime.  The teams traded touchdowns in the second overtime before Rice threw an interception to Justin Grier, setting up Bash’s game-winning kick.

Iowa quail population at 21 year high as hunting season opens

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

October 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Pheasants aren’t the only game bird growing in population in Iowa. Todd Bogenschutz, with the Department of Natural Resources, says quail numbers are at their highest level in a couple of decades. “Our quail numbers, statewide, are at the highest we’ve seen since 1994,” Bogenschutz says. The hunting season for both pheasants and quail opens today (Saturday). Bogenschutz says, in some respects, hunting quail presents more of a challenge.

“I think the bird, because it’s small…when you get a covey to rise, people describe it as bumblebees going everywhere. So, I think the challenge is picking a target out of that blur of 10 to 15 birds that all just got up at once,” Bogenschutz. In addition to more quail, a DNR roadside survey found the state’s pheasant population increased by 37-percent this year. While the pheasant hunting season ends on January 10, hunters can use the same small game license for quail through January 30.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Kansas City Royals looked uncharacteristically shaky in a 9-3 loss to the New York Mets that cut their lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven World Series. That Gold Glove defense led by Eric Hosmer bungled several key plays. Those bats that couldn’t miss in the first two World Series games were flailing helplessly against Noah Syndergaard once the rookie settled in. The nearly unhittable bullpen had trouble getting outs. Yordano Ventura gave back two early leads.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kansas City pitcher Chris Young will be working on three days’ rest to try to push the Royals to the brink of their first World Series championship since 1985. He’s set to start Game 4 tonight (Saturday) against the Mets’ Steven Matz. Young won the opener in relief Tuesday, throwing 53 pitches and striking out four over three hitless innings. He says his body feels fine and he’s not worried about bouncing back.

LONDON (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are about to play their strangest “home” game in team history — in front of 84,000 mostly English spectators 4,300 miles from Arrowhead Stadium. Sunday’s matchup with the Detroit Lions (1-6) in London is part of the NFL’s effort to build a British base for American football. It will be the Chiefs’ (2-5) first regular-season game played on foreign soil. Coach Andy Reid and quarterback Alex Smith have vowed to ensure that the sacrifice of a real home game won’t cost the team a win. You can hear the game Sunday morning on KJAN, beginning with the pre-game show at 7-a.m.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) — Joey Logano has won the pole at Martinsville Speedway as he seeks his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup victory. Logano turned a lap at 98.548 mph in qualifying to finish ahead of Martin Truex Jr. and non-Chase drivers AJ Allmendinger and Jamie McMurray. No driver has won four straight Cup races since Jimmie Johnson in 2007.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods says he had a follow-up procedure on his back Wednesday to relieve discomfort. Woods underwent a pair of microdiscectomy last year and new says he returned to the Tour too early. There is no timetable on his return.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Scott McCarron and Steve Pate shared the lead at 8-under 63 after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic. McCarron eagled the par-5 15th and had six birdies and an eagle at Newport Beach Country Club. Billy Andrade (AN’-drayd) and Rod Spittle were a stroke back in the final full-field event of the season.
