DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — It’s been 30 years since a fiery plane crash killed much of Iowa State’s women’s cross country team, just hours after a surprising second place finish at a championship meet.

On Wednesday, surviving runners will join with running enthusiasts and others at the site where the twin-engine plane went down in a quiet Des Moines neighborhood. The crash that icy evening of Nov. 25, 1985, killed three runners, two coaches, an athletic trainer and the pilot.

Jill Slettedahl-Winter, of Danville, Kentucky, was an 18-year-old freshman that day. She recalls how one of the best days of her life suddenly became the worst.

Residents plan to establish a permanent memorial near the crash site.

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — The Big Ten’s top performer on kickoffs, punt returns or both will receive the Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year trophy beginning this season.

The conference on Tuesday announced the new award named in honor of former return specialists Johnny Rodgers of Nebraska and Tim Dwight of Iowa.

Rodgers and Dwight will be recognized Friday at the Iowa-Nebraska game in Lincoln, Nebraska. Rodgers was a two-time All-American who won the Heisman Trophy in 1972. Dwight was a two-time first-team All-American as a punt returner, earning consensus All-America honors in 1997.

The Big Ten also will expand its all-conference teams, adding a third team to first-team, second-team and honorable mention selections.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Jacob Zachary ran for two touchdowns, and West Des Moines Dowling beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy 41-10 on Monday night for its third straight Class 4A state championship. Dowling (13-0) became the first 4A school with three in a row, and it accomplished the feat with its usual combination of efficient offense and tough-to-penetrate defense.

Ryan Mells and Atlias Bell each returned a fumble for a touchdown and helped contain a potent Kennedy offense that averaged 40 points in its four previous playoff games. Tyler Dralle rushed for 127 yards for Kennedy (13-1), and versatile Shaun Beyer made some big plays, but the Cougars struggled to finish drives.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Logan Backhaus accounted for six touchdowns before leaving the game with an injury and unbeaten Spirit Lake rolled to the Class 2A state championship with a 70-56 victory over Mount Vernon.

Backhaus, who scored four TDs and passed for two others, was hurt when he was hit after completing a 2-point conversion pass with 10:12 left in the game Monday.

He was attended to for nearly 15 minutes before being wheeled off on a stretcher, raising both arms to show he was OK as fans from both schools applauded.

Earlier, he was the catalyst in an offensive showcase that produced a slew of records and gave Spirit Lake (14-0) its second title in four years. Mount Vernon (11-3) rallied after falling behind 42-14 in the second quarter but couldn’t match Spirit Lake’s firepower.
