Yadier Molina undergoes 2nd thumb surgery, in cast 4-5 weeks

Sports

December 17th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has undergone a second operation on his injured left thumb and will be in a cast for 4-5 weeks. The second surgery took place because Molina was still experiencing discomfort in the thumb. The first operation came in mid-October after the Cardinals were eliminated by the Chicago Cubs in the NL Division Series.

The team is hopeful the eight-time Gold Glove winner and seven-time All-Star can return by opening day. After the first procedure, they had anticipated he would be ready for spring training. The 33-year-old Molina returned for the playoffs after injuring the thumb while tagging out the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo at the plate in Chicago on Sept. 20.

Kyler Erickson scored a career-high 13 and Tim Smallwood had 10 points for Omaha (6-5). The Mavericks outrebounded Simpson 56-33, including 23-5 on the offensive glass. White scored the final six points in an 8-0 run to give Omaha a 35-20 lead with 8:16 left in the first half. Simpson’s Austin Turner hit a 3 just more than a minute later but the Storm went scoreless for five-plus minutes as the Mavericks pushed their lead to 27 with 1:55 left before halftime.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has signed five junior college players to bolster the Cyclones in 2016. Iowa State announced Wednesday that Campbell has brought in two defensive backs, a pair of linemen and a tight end. All five will enroll for the spring semester.

Perhaps the most intriguing new Iowa State player is defensive back D’Andre Payne, a former four-star recruit who played at Tennessee as a freshman in 2014 before redshirting last year at a junior college.

The linemen are Oge Odeogu and Karson Green, the tight end is Clifford Fernandez and the other defensive back is Thadd Daniels.

Iowa State freshman running back Mike Warren is newcomer of the year after running for 1,339 yards.

DALLAS (AP) — Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz has won the Eddie Robinson Award, given to the nation’s top coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Football Writers Association of America announced Wednesday that Ferentz was selected for the honor by its members. Ferentz is the first Iowa coach to win the award in its 59-year history.
