Coralville to vote on plans for Hayden Fry statue

News, Sports

January 26th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) – Coralville’s City Council is set to vote on an agreement with a company to design and create a life-sized bronze statue in honor of former University of Iowa football coach Hayden Fry. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that the City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday. The city intends to hire Max-Cast, a fine arts foundry, to create the $36,000 statue that would be placed along a street known as Hayden Fry Way.

Max-Cast owner Steve Maxon has been working with the University of Iowa to develop conceptual drawings for the statue. Fry, who now lives in Mesquite, Nevada, retired from coaching following the 1998 season. He led the Hawkeyes to the Rose Bowl three times and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Tim Meadows impersonates Ben Carson at Iowa State game

Sports

January 25th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Former “Saturday Night Live” actor Tim Meadows made a surprise appearance before Iowa State’s basketball game against Kansas — playing Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson. Meadows showed up at half court roughly 90 minutes before tip-off in Ames, Iowa. The public address announcer introduced him as Carson, and Meadows proceeded to sing the national anthem in the neurosurgeon’s voice.

The only fans in the building were in the student section — and they had no idea Meadows would be making an appearance. But by the end of “The Star Spangled Banner” many of them were singing along. Meadows told The Associated Press that he was shooting a comedy sketch for the Funny Or Die website, adding that he planned to film additional segments Tuesday.

Hawkeyes up to No. 3 in AP Poll, Sooners stay No. 1

Sports

January 25th, 2016 by admin

Oklahoma, despite losing to Iowa State last week, remains No. 1 in The Associated Press college basketball poll. Unlike last week, when the Sooners were a unanimous No. 1, North Carolina is a close second.

Oklahoma (16-2) received 36 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel on Monday, seven more than the Tar Heels (18-2), who remained second.

Iowa jumped from ninth to third, the Hawkeyes’ highest ranking since January 1987. They were followed by Kansas and Texas A&M, which is at its highest ranking ever. Villanova, Xavier, Maryland, West Virginia and Providence round out the Top Ten.

Wichita State, Oregon and Notre Dame — all of whom have been ranked during the season — are the week’s newcomers replacing Butler, Southern California and South Carolina.

Iowa is ranked 4th in the USA Today Coaches Poll, while Iowa State is 16th.  North Carolina jumped to the top spot in that poll.

The top 25 teams in The Associated Press’ college basketball poll, with first-place votes in parentheses, records through Jan. 24, total points based on 25 points for a first-place vote through one point for a 25th-place vote and previous ranking:
