TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Mike Leake went four shutout innings, Stephen Piscotty homered twice and the St. Louis Cardinals beat a New York Yankees’ split squad 9-1 on Thursday. Leake gave up two hits and struck out five. He got inning-ending double plays from Alex Rodriguez and Chase Headley.
Leake, signed to an $80 million, five-year free-agent contract in December, has 24 strikeouts and two walks in 20 innings overall. He threw 33 of 39 pitches for strikes. Piscotty hit a second-inning solo shot, and added his second homer this spring one pitch after Brandon Moss had a solo drive during the fourth off Michael Pineda.
Jeremy Hazelbaker added a three-run homer in the fifth. Tommy Pham had a two-run shot in the seventh. Pineda gave up six runs and seven hits over five innings. He had given up just one run in nine earlier spring training innings.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa says freshman guard Andrew Fleming has been released from his scholarship so he can transfer to another school. Fleming averaged 2.2 points and one assist in 11 games last season. Fleming says he is seeking a “better situation” for his college career.
Fleming is the second Hawkeye in as many days to announce that they are leaving the program. Fellow freshman Brandon Hutton said Wednesday that he is transferring as well. The departure of Fleming and Hutton likely frees up a scholarship for walk-on Nicholas Baer, who scored 15 points in Iowa’s 87-68 loss to Villanova in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Hawkeyes also now have a scholarship available if they want to increase their depth in the backcourt.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State quarterback Joel Lanning had his moments after earning the starting job midway through last season. The Cyclones will need to see more than just glimpses of promise from Lanning this fall if they hope to end a three-year bowl drought.
Lanning, who’ll be a junior in 2016, is the only quarterback for Iowa State that’s taken a collegiate snap. So his progress this offseason is perhaps the biggest area to watch as coach Matt Campbell enters his first season as coach.
The Cyclones, who have only Lanning and redshirt freshman Dominic De Lira as quarterbacks on scholarship this spring, end camp with a scrimmage on April 16 at Jack Trice Stadium.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed Charcandrick West to a three-year extension and fellow running back Spencer Ware to a two-year extension Thursday, solidifying their backfield alongside Jamaal Charles.
West and Spencer proved to be a potent change-of-pace duo when Charles went down with a season-ending ACL injury last season. Charles is expected to be ready for the start of the upcoming season, but locking up West and Ware will help take some of the load off the two-time All-Pro.
It also makes running back Knile Davis a potential trade piece.
The quick, elusive West started nine games and ran for 634 yards and four touchdowns last season, while the more physical Ware started two games and ran for 403 yards and six touchdowns.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals employed the same formula they used to win 100 games last season — good starting pitching, enough timely hitting and Trevor Rosenthal closing out the game — to defeat the Miami Marlins 3-0 on Wednesday in both teams’ final spring game.
Michael Wacha had by far his best outing, tossing five shutout innings of two-hit ball. Rosenthal struck out two as part of a perfect ninth to record his first save of the spring. Matt Holliday smacked a two-run double into the left-center field gap off Edwin Jackson with two outs in the fifth, giving St. Louis a 3-0 lead. Holiday has a single, double, home run and walk over his last five plate appearances.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the fourth with Yadier Molina’s first RBI, a two-out single punched off the glove of diving Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon and into right field.
The University of Iowa football team will hold an open practice at Valley Stadium, West Des Moines, on Friday, April 8, with a youth clinic scheduled to follow the practice session. The Hawkeyes are staging the event at Valley Stadium for the fourth straight spring.
The open practice in West Des Moines will begin at 6 p.m. at Valley Stadium, and will be preceded by an autograph session on the field at 5:30 p.m. West and Southeast gates will open at 4:30 p.m. No tickets are required for the event, which is free to the public. Roster cards, posters, schedule cards, and 2016 ticket information will be available at all open gates.
A 45-minute youth clinic will take place following the practice (approximately 7:45 p.m.). The clinic is open for the first 275 children (ages 7-12), with all participants receiving a free t-shirt. Release of Liability forms will be distributed at the entrance gates. Forms must be completed and signed by the youth’s parent/guardian and presented to UI staff at the NW Field Gate at 7:15 p.m. Parents/guardians will not be permitted on the field during the youth clinic.
Concession stands within the stadium will be open and Herky’s Locker Room will be open outside the west entrance. No outside food or drink will be allowed in Valley Stadium. Other prohibited items include strollers and umbrellas. Bags may also be subject to search upon entry to Valley Stadium.
No tailgating, including open flame grills, is allowed on West Des Moines Community School District, city of West Des Moines, or Valley Church property; including before and after the practice. Alcohol is not ever allowed on the city of West Des Moines or West Des Moines Community Schools property. All WDMCS property, including Valley Stadium, is tobacco-free.
Iowa began spring drills on Wednesday, March 23. The Hawkeyes will host their final spring practice in Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, April 23 (1 p.m.) to conclude spring practice.
The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced its end-of-the-year major award winners on Wednesday morning, and current Buena Vista and former Audubon wrestler Brad Kerkhoff has been tabbed the IIAC Freshman of the Year.
This marks the second straight season that a Beaver wrestler has captured the award. Nashid Barrow took home the honors in 2014-15.
Kerkhoff, who wrestled at 149 pounds for BVU this season, posted a team-best 20-14 record overall and went 2-2 in league matches. He finished sixth place at the NCAA Regional Tournament and was runner-up at the Luther College Open early in the year. He also excelled off the mat and was tabbed a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) following the season. Kerkhoff was also named BVU Freshman of the Year.
The Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs has announced the Iowa Barnstormers will be hosting a Military Night, including free tickets for ALL active military, veterans, and their families, on Friday, May 27th at Wells Fargo Arena. The Arena Football League Barnstormers will be taking on the Sioux Falls Storm, beginning at 7:05-p.m. at “The Well.”
Local veterans organizations will also be on hand to provide information and services for our members of the military. 
The Chelsey Henkenius Earlybird Co-Ed Track Meet was hosted by South Central Calhoun on Tuesday evening and a number of area teams competed.
