Federal team to begin on-campus probe of Iowa athletics

Sports

April 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A team of investigators this week begins an on-campus civil rights investigation into allegations that the University of Iowa athletics department doesn’t provide equal opportunities for female athletes.

The Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education is looking into gender bias allegations in 13 areas, including how the department counts participation levels, awards scholarships, schedules practices and games and delivers services such as tutoring, medical care, housing and dining. The department’s equipment, locker rooms and facilities will be part of the review.

If discrimination is found, the investigation could result in a settlement requiring the university to change policies, spend more money on women’s athletics or even add another women’s sport. Officials have said the review could take years.

ATLANTA (AP) — Brandon Moss and Matt Carpenter hit three-run homers and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Braves 12-7 on Sunday to keep Atlanta as the only NL team without a win. The Braves (0-5) also lost right-hander Dan Winkler, who suffered a fractured right elbow while throwing a pitch in the seventh. He left the mound in obvious pain after throwing a pitch behind Randal Grichuk.

The Cardinals completed the three-game sweep despite a poor start from Adam Wainwright, who allowed five runs in five innings. After rallying for a 7-6 lead in the eighth, the Cardinals put the game away with five runs in the ninth to score 12 runs for the second straight day. Aledmys Diaz hit a two-run double off Jose Ramirez in the ninth before Carpenter’s three-run homer.

LOS ANGELES – Iowa State senior Georges Niang has been announced as the winner of the 2016 Karl Malone Award, presented annually to the nation’s top college basketball power forward by Basketball Hall of Fame. Niang was named the recipient of the award Friday evening on ESPN’s College Basketball Awards Show, which was held at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

Niang, who has re-written the Iowa State record books, is the first Cyclone men’s basketball player to win an individual postseason award. He is the first two-time All-American in school history after earning second-team honors from the Associated Press, National Association of Basketball Coaches and the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Niang averaged 20.5 points and shot 54.6 percent from the field, 39.2 percent behind the arc and 80.7 percent at the free-throw line en route to earning consensus All-America honors in his final collegiate season.

The unanimous All-Big 12 First-Team selection was a dominant force on the offensive end, scoring in double figures in all 35 games and posting 17 games with 20 or more points.

He averaged 28.7 points in three NCAA Tournament games, becoming just the fifth player in tournament history to score 28 or more points in three consecutive games.

Niang finished second in the Big 12 in scoring and was the only player in the league to rank among the top-10 in rebounds and assists.
