Chiefs trade first-round pick to San Francisco

Sports

April 29th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs traded the 28th overall pick to San Francisco on Thursday night and received the 49ers’ second-round pick along with choices in the fourth and sixth rounds in this year’s NFL draft. The 49ers used the first-round pick on Stanford guard Joshua Garnett.

Kansas City will have the 37th overall pick when the draft resumes with the second and third rounds Friday night. They will also have their original second-round choice at Number 59.

The Chiefs had their third-round pick stripped as part of the penalties handed down for a tampering case last offseason. So when runs on cornerback and wide receiver took several top players off the board at their biggest positions of the need, the Chiefs made the decision to trade down.

Iowa college standouts await NFL Draft

Sports

April 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Northern Iowa safety Deiondre’ Hall is the highest rated Iowa college player heading into tonight’s (Thursday night’s) start of the NFL Draft in Chicago. Hall was the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior and is ranked as the eighth best safety in the draft according to CBSsports.com.

Hall is one of two Panthers who are projected to be taken in the draft. If both get drafted it would be the second year in a row that UNI had two players selected in the draft. Hall and Makinton Dorleant hope to join the ever growing list of former UNI players who made it to the NFL.

Iowa tight end Henry Krieger-Coble and center Austin Blythe are projected as sixth or seventh round selections.

Cardinals bash past Diamondbacks 11-4

Sports

April 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

PHOENIX (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched into the sixth inning for his first win and hit a three-run triple in St. Louis’ fifth straight offensive outburst, lifting the Cardinals to an 11-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday night. St. Louis scored 18 combined runs in two games to close out a sweep over San Diego and had 15 in splitting the first two against Arizona.

The Cardinals kept bashing, knocking around Patrick Corbin (1-3) and finishing with 14 hits, four by Stephen Piscotty. Aledmys Diaz homered, scored three runs and had two RBIs for the Cardinals, who have won four of five. Piscotty, Matt Carpenter and Matt Holiday also drove in two runs each.

Wainwright (1-3) gave up homers to Brandon Drury and Paul Goldschmidt but ended his worst start since 2012 behind the Cardinals’ big run support.

Weather concerns cloud Drake Relays

Sports

April 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The biggest unknown for the annual Drake Relays has always been the weather. Conditions could be a big factor this year — especially with every athlete’s training geared toward making and then peaking at the Rio Olympics.

Drake has lined up stars like LaShawn Merritt, Kirani James, Jenny Simpson and Brittney Reese to compete in this year’s meet, which starts in earnest Thursday and runs through Saturday. But the forecast calls for rain on Saturday, which could lead to athletes deciding to pull out rather than risk an injury that would keep them out of a trip to Rio.
