Werth’s bat, Ross’ arm lead Nationals past Cardinals

Sports

April 30th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Jayson Werth’s three-run home run capped a four-run first inning and Joe Ross had another stingy outing for the Washington Nationals in a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. Ross (3-0) allowed one run on six hits in six innings, raising his ERA to 0.79. He has given up only two runs in 22 2/3 innings.

Werth added an RBI single in the eighth, his fifth in the first two games of a weekend series and 10th of the year. Washington goes for a sweep Sunday after raising its record to 8-24 at 11-year-old Busch Stadium.

Opponents had been 2 for 13 with no runs in the first against Jaime Garcia (1-2) before the Nationals jumped on the lefty for four runs on three hits. Daniel Murphy had an RBI single before Werth hit his fourth over the left-field wall. Garcia struck out six and walked three in 6 1/3 innings.

Chiefs take Miss St DT Chris Jones in second round of draft

Sports

April 30th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs chose versatile defensive tackle Chris Jones from Mississippi State with the sixth pick in the second round of the NFL draft on Friday night. The Chiefs had traded their first-round choice to San Francisco on Thursday night for a package that included the No. 37 overall pick, plus selections in the fourth and sixth rounds.

The 6-foot-6, 308-pound Jones provides depth along the defensive line after the retirement of veteran Mike DeVito this offseason. He also gives the Chiefs some bargaining leverage with defensive tackle Dontari Poe, whose contract expires after next season.

Chiefs general manager John Dorsey had expressed his admiration of UCLA linebacker Myles Jack on Thursday night, but Jacksonville moved up to take him one pick ahead of Kansas City.

Sports

April 30th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Stephen Strasburg struck out nine including seven of eight in one stretch and the Washington Nationals got home runs from Michael Taylor and Danny Espinosa in a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Taylor’s second leadoff homer of the year ended a 22-inning scoreless drought for the Nationals. Espinosa’s first of the season was a two-run shot that capped a four-run fourth against Mike Leake (0-3).

Strasburg (4-0) gave up two runs on eight hits in seven innings with one walk. He has 29 strikeouts in 22 1-3 innings his last three outings. Jonathan Papelbon earned his eighth save in nine chances for Washington, which is 5-0 in Strasburg’s starts.
