LOS ANGELES (AP) — Scott Kazmir pitched 8 2/3 innings, Adrian Gonzalez and Corey Seager homered and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3, Saturday night. Gonzalez hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season, to lead off the fourth inning. Seager, who had three hits, ripped a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Kazmir (3-3) allowed three runs on five hits, struck out seven and walked one. He was nearly flawless until Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run to pull the Cardinals within two runs in the ninth. Closer Kenley Jansen recorded the final out for his 13th save. The Dodgers scored three runs in the fifth after Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez (4-3) loaded the bases with no outs. Martinez left after that.

May 14th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The 32nd annual Iowa Special Olympics Summer Games will open next week at Iowa State University in Ames. Stephanie Kozer is spokeswoman for the games, which are expected to draw competitors from across the state. “We have about 2,600 athletes coming, coaches, volunteers, staff, local law enforcement,” Kozer says. “The events kick off next Monday with our Law Enforcement Torch Run.” That event involves about 500 law officers from across Iowa who will be running, walking and biking along predetermined routes, headed for Ames.

“They will converge downtown on Thursday where they’ll take the flame and go to Hilton Colliseum at Iowa State to kick off the opening ceremonies,” Kozer says. “Then, they hand off the flame to one of the athletes who lights the Olympic flame and signifies the opening of the games.” A wide variety of sporting events are scheduled.

“We have competitions going Thursday, Friday and Saturday, everything from tennis to athletics, which is track & field, cycling, bocce, soccer,” she says. Admission is free. Learn more at: www.soiowa.org.

Stripling, Dodgers beat Cardinals 8-4 for rookie’s 1st win

Sports

May 14th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ross Stripling earned his first victory in his seventh major league start by beating his former college roommate, Yasiel Puig homered and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8-4 Friday night in the series opener. Stripling (1-2) allowed four runs and eight hits in five-plus innings, struck out two and walked three.

He had two wild pitches, including one that led to a run in the sixth. Stripling avoided being the first Dodgers pitcher to go winless in his first seven-plus starts since Clayton Kershaw in 2008. He squared off against Michael Wacha, his former teammate at Texas A&M. Kenley Jansen retired two batters in the ninth to earn his 12th save.

Wacha (2-4) gave up six runs — two earned — and eight hits in four innings, struck out two and walked three.
