Grichuk’s homer in 9th lifts Cardinals to 4-3 win over Cubs

Sports

May 24th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Randal Grichuck hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the ninth to lift the St. Louis Cardinals a 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night. Matt Adams tied the score with a two-run homer off in the seventh for St. Louis’ major league-leading ninth pinch-hit homer of the season. It also ended a streak of 13 innings of one-run pitching by Chicago starter John Lackey against his former team.

Grichuk drove a 2-2 pitch off of Adam Warren (3-1) for the win. Trevor Rosenthal (2-1) pitched a scoreless ninth. The Cubs’ Ben Zobrist had three singles and a walk, extending his streak to 29 starts with reaching safely. He is hitting .387 during that span.

Comments from Head Coach Kathy Hobson: “This victory allowed us to accomplish another goal for this season and that is a return to the state tournament.  Very excited for this team to continue on.  However, if we are going to contend for our ultimate goal, a state championship, we are going to have to play better.  As a team, we didn’t play bad today, buy we didn’t play good either.  363 is a great score but it is not what we are capable of.  So many times, we weren’t our usual selves on the course.”

Greinke, Diamondbacks too much for Cardinals, 7-2

Sports

May 22nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Zack Greinke threw eight strong innings and Paul Goldschmidt drove in a pair of runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 7-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Michael Bourn added three hits for Arizona, which has won four of six. The Diamondbacks won a series in St. Louis for the first time since April 18-20, 2003.

Brandon Moss homered for Cardinals, who fell to 3-3 on their nine-game homestand. Greinke (5-3), who has won five of his past six starts, allowed five hits and one run. He struck out seven and walked one. The reigning NL ERA champion improved to 11-4 against St. Louis. He also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Arizona scored three runs in the first off Jaime Garcia (3-4), who gave up five runs and 10 hits in 2 1-3 innings.

Cardinals blast 3 homers, Leake shuts down Diamondbacks 6-2

Sports

May 22nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jedd Gyorko, Matt Adams and Yadier Molina homered and Mike Leake pitched seven scoreless innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2 on Saturday. Leake (3-3) retired eight straight between the second and fourth innings and battled back from a 3-0 count to strike out Chris Owings in the fifth to help thwart the Diamondbacks’ best scoring opportunity against him.

It was Leake’s third straight win and first at home since signing with the Cardinals as a free agent this offseason. During that span, Leake has a 0.85 ERA. Leake even showed off at the plate with a double to left in the sixth. The righty also made a nice barehanded play to throw out Rickie Weeks Jr. at first in the seventh.

Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray (2-3) battled through five innings but took the loss.
