OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Big Ten tournament games between Maryland and Michigan State and Iowa and Ohio State were postponed from Thursday until today (Friday) because of inclement weather.

MLB commissioner announces Hall of Fame tour stops

Sports

May 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred traveled to the “Field of Dreams” movie site in eastern Iowa to announce this year’s National Baseball Hall of Fame tour stops in six cities.

The Telegraph Herald reports Manfred was joined by 2015 Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz in Dyersville to announce that Davenport, Iowa; Kansas City, Missouri; Milwaukee; St. Louis; Minneapolis; and Las Vegas will be host cities for this year’s “We Are Baseball” tour stops.

Hundreds came to hear the announcement at the site of the 1989 movie. Manfred told attendees that the league wants to bring baseball’s history to its fans because not everyone can make it to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

The tour will begin July 3rd through 10th at Davenport’s baseball stadium.

Harper, Espinosa HRs carry Nationals over Cardinals 2-1

Sports

May 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bryce Harper hit a slump-busting home run, Danny Espinosa also went deep and the Washington Nationals got seven strong innings from right-hander Joe Ross in a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night.

Washington trailed 1-0 in the sixth inning before Harper ended a 4-for-33 skid with a no-doubt-about-it shot into the upper deck, far beyond the wall in right field. It was his 12th homer of the season, the first since May 13. The light-hitting Espinosa snapped the tie in the seventh with a drive to right. Batting eighth, Espinosa came in with a .199 batting average and three home runs.

Both homers came off Mike Leake (3-4), who won his previous three starts while allowing only two runs over 21 innings. Ross (4-4) gave up one run and six hits over seven innings. He had lost four straight decisions since beating the Cardinals in St. Louis on April 30.

Cardinals place Matt Carpenter on paternity list

Sports

May 26th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals have placed third baseman Matt Carpenter on the paternity list and recalled infielder Greg Garcia from Triple-A Memphis. Carpenter, the leadoff man, is first on the team with nine homers and 32 RBIs and is batting .250 with a .378 on-base percentage.

The 26-year-old Garcia was on the opening day roster and appeared in 10 games before being optioned to Memphis on April 17. He batted .600 (6 for 10) with a home run and two RBIs in his earlier stint with St. Louis and was batting .269 with eight RBIs in 30 games in the minors.

Garcia has been one of the team’s best pinch hitters with a career .335 average (11 for 31), including two homers.
