The Atlantic Trojans Softball team finally got their chance at a game in the State Softball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon but came up short to Davenport Assumption by a score of 11-3.  The Trojans were originally scheduled to play on Tuesday but all games were moved back a day due to heavy rain in Ft. Atlantic will now play in the consolation bracket at noon on Thursday against CMB on Dodger Field at the Harlan Rogers Sports Complex in Ft. Dodge. They will then play in the 5th or 7th place game at 4:00pm on Thursday as well.

Padres-Cards rained out, day-night twin bill set for today

Sports

July 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The game between the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed because of anticipated storms. The game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader today (Wednesday) with the first game at 2:15 p.m. and the second game at 8:15 p.m. With threatening weather in the area, the Padres and Cardinals never got started at Busch Stadium.

The Cards’ Jhonny Peralta is going back on the disabled list because of a strained ligament in his surgically repaired left thumb. The 34-year-old Peralta was placed on the 15-day DL. He is batting .221 with five homers and 13 RBIs. He missed the first 57 games of the season before returning June 7th.

Outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to replace him. St. Louis also recalled right-handed reliever Miguel Socolovich and designated catcher Mike McKenry for assignment. Hazelbaker was on the opening day roster and has made 44 starts, batting .250 with seven homers and 19 RBIs. He’s among the top pinch hitters in the majors with three homers, a .368 average and six RBIs.

Socolovich is 2-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 35 games at Memphis.

Feds charge Iowa woman with fraud in Super Bowl ticket scam

News, Sports

July 19th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa woman who duped dozens of people into buying non-existent tickets to the Super Bowl and other high-profile events has been charged with fraud. The federal charges of mail and tax fraud against Ranae Van Roekel of Boyden, Iowa come four years after her alleged scheme became public. A document filed Monday charges Van Roekel with fraudulently obtaining more than $531,000 from customers between 2008 and 2012.

Prosecutors say Van Roekel falsely claimed to have access to tickets, hotel rooms and VIP passes at deep discounts due to personal connections, once claiming she was on the Super Bowl planning committee. After collecting money, she told customers she couldn’t fill most of the orders. She often targeted customers that she had contact with through youth sports.
