Atlantic Volleyball hoping to build on off-season work

Sports

August 23rd, 2016 by admin

Atlantic Head Volleyball Coach Emma Walker is starting to feel like it’s her program.  The young coach is heading into her second season as Head Coach and thinks some improvement is on the horizon for her team. “I think it’s hard to take over a program, especially when there has been little to no consistency in the last six or seven years. I think in the four years that the Seniors last year competed, they had 3 different coaches. This year I’m really taking ownership of the program and the girls are taking ownership, it’s just a really different atmosphere in the gym.  A lot of hard work and more competitiveness, so I think things are definitely heading in the right direction.”

Coach Walker has also been impressed by the level of commitment her girls have shown to the game.  She said every one of her expected starters were involved in winter club volleyball and they all were in for every summer camp and open gym they held. “I feel really confident in their determination and desire to better themselves.”

Atlantic hopes to improve on a 2 win season last year and Coach Walker believes they have what it takes to take a big step forward.  Atlantic opens the season tonight with a triangular with AC-GC and Earlham at Guthrie Center High School.  Coach Walker has been really impressed with their recent play and workouts and hopes that carries over into the start of the season.  She thinks some early play will also help the team gain valuable experience.

The Trojans continue play this Saturday at the AHSTW tournament.

Listen to more from Coach Walker on our Saturday morning coaches show at 8:30am.

Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali off PUP list, begins practicing

Sports

August 23rd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs took pass rusher Tamba Hali off the physically unable to perform list Monday, though the team said he will practice on a limited basis. Hali had surgery in the offseason on his balky knees, which forced him to miss nearly every practice late last season. He was still able to play in games but hardly looked 100 percent.

Hali has spent training camp working out with trainers, but his removal from the PUP list means he can begin working out with the rest of the team. Still, it is unlikely he will play in the Chiefs’ remaining preseason games against Chicago and Green Bay.

The 32-year-old Hali played in 15 games and had 6 1/2 sacks last season.

Atlantic’s Franken makes verbal commitment to North Dakota hoops

Atlantic Senior Basketball player Garrett Franken made a verbal commitment on Sunday to play his college basketball at the University of North Dakota.  Franken made the announcement after spending some time with the team on a visit this past weekend.  He received an offer from the Division 1 program back in early July.  “I have been talking to their coaches since I was a Sophomore. I wanted to wait until I visited campus to commit and I just loved everything about the school.”, Franken said.

Franken just completed his Junior season with Atlantic in which the Trojans went 18-5 and only lost to three teams.  The 6’7″ Franken averaged 16 points per game on 43% shooting for the season.  He also collected 125 rebounds, had 89 assists, and 39 steals while primarily playing the Point Guard position.

Franken said he also received offers from Sioux Falls and Dordt (where his brother Dalton plays) but ultimately liked the fit with North Dakota.  He also said he wanted to get a decision made now, “I wanted to make my decision before my Senior year so I didn’t have to worry about it and could just go out and play during the season.”

The North Dakota Fighting Hawks are located in Grand Forks, North Dakota and play in the Big Sky Conference.  The Fighting Hawks went 17-16 overall last season and 10-8 in conference play.
