Cubs recall INF La Stella from Triple-A Iowa

Sports

August 31st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have recalled infielder Tommy La Stella from Triple-A Iowa and optioned reliever Spencer Patton to their top farm club. La Stella was sent down on July 29, but refused to report to the minors. After weeks of dialogue between the New Jersey native and the team, La Stella joined Double-A Tennessee in mid-August.

The 27-year-old La Stella got the start at second for the series finale against Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. He is batting .295 with two homers and eight RBIs in 51 games with major league-leading Chicago. Patton is 1-1 with a 4.67 ERA in 12 appearances with the Cubs this season. La Stella was acquired in a November 2014 trade with Atlanta.

Bow hunting permits available for deer hunting in Atlantic

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

August 31st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic Police Department reports permit applications are currently being accepted for bow hunting within the City limits (in accordance with the City’s Urban Deer Control Ordinance). The permit will allow hunters to harvest antlerless deer. Once you have reported the harvest to the Atlantic Police Department, you’ll be allowed to harvest a Buck. Applications may be picked up at the Police Department from 8-a.m. to 4-p.m., Monday through Friday.

Bow hunters that qualified last year with the Police Department do not need to do so this year, but you still need to pick up a permit application and have it filled out. New hunters will need to contact the A-PD and set up a time with Lt. Dave Erickson, for you to qualify.

Land owners who would like to allow a bow hunter to hunt on their land, should contact the Police Dept. at 712-243-3512 during business hours, and sign-up.

Ferentz previews Miami of Ohio

Sports

August 31st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says every season is a new challenge but if this year’s version of the Hawkeyes can learn to prepare like last year’s team it could be another successful season. The Hawkeyes take a number-17 national ranking into Saturday’s opener against Miami of Ohio after a banner 2015 campaign in which they finished 12-0 in the regular season.

Ferentz says the key is to focus on the current challenge and not the big picture. The Hawkeyes will be heavily favored against a Miami team that struggled to a 3-9 record in 2015. Quarterback C.J. Beathard returns for his senior season and is healthy following off season surgery. Beathard showed the ability to make plays with his feet even when he was banged up in 2015.

The Hawkeyes open the season with a true freshman walk-on kicker. Ferentz says he did not even know who Keith Duncan was when the North Carolina native visited the campus.

Chiefs move Houston to PUP list, place Mauga on IR

Sports

August 31st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have placed Justin Houston on the physically unable to perform list and put fellow linebacker Josh Mauga on injured reserve as they trimmed down to the NFL’s roster limit. Houston is still recovering from surgery in February to repair a non-functioning ACL in his left knee. He will continue his rehab and be evaluated by Dr. James Andrews during the Chiefs’ bye week in early October with the hope that he will play at some point this season.

Mauga tore the labrum in his hip in early August. He will have surgery on Sept. 8. The Chiefs also waived Mitch Matthews, getting them to 76 players by Tuesday’s deadline. The limit is normally 75 but Kansas City got a roster exemption for Eric Berry, who reported to camp Sunday.

Grichuk gives Cards lead, Duke gets big K in win vs Brewers

Sports

August 31st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Zach Duke stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout in the 10th inning after Randal Grichuk hit an RBI single in the top half of the inning, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Seung Hwan Oh (4-2) pitched out of a jam in the ninth to get the win. Duke got his first save with the Cardinals by striking out pinch-hitter Manny Pina after Matt Bowman walked three batters.

The Cardinals’ Jhonny Peralta led off the 10th with a single off Corey Knebel (0-2) and moved to third on Yadier Molina’s ground-rule double. Jeremy Hazelbaker, who pinch ran for Peralta, scored the winning run on Grichuk’s flare to right.

St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright and Milwaukee’s Wily Peralta dueled for seven innings, leaving a 1-1 game for the bullpens.

Late throwing error lifts Cardinals to 6-5 win over Brewers

Sports

August 30th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Stephen Piscotty scored on a throwing error in the ninth inning after Carlos Martinez struck out a career-high 13, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 on Monday night.

With two on and nobody out in the ninth, Yadier Molina dropped down a bunt. Reliever Tyler Thornburg (5-5) threw to third base for a force out, but Jonathan Villar’s throw to first was wild, allowing Piscotty to score.

After Martinez held Milwaukee to one run over six innings, the Brewers scored four runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. St. Louis tied it in the eighth on a two-run homer by Randal Grichuk off Corey Knebel. Seung Hwan Oh pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save. Miguel Socolovich (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first win.

Jedd Gyorko and Kolten Wong each hit solo home runs for the Cardinals.
