Statue of Hayden Fry unveiled today in Coralville

Sports

September 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Former Iowa football coach Hayden Fry was on hand for the “big reveal” in
Coralville today (Friday).  “I didn’t ever know that I looked that good,” Fry joked. A statue of Fry as he looked standing along the sidelines in Kinnick Stadium was unveiled today (Friday). “It’s a fantastic statue,” Fry said, laughing. “Slim and trim, in good shape because of the football and the Marine Corps.”

The 1979 season was Fry’s first at the University of Iowa. He told Hawkeye fans that if you stayed with the game long enough, “the worm is bound to turn” — and Fry guided the program to national prominence. He spent nearly 20 years at the school. His statue will be placed on First Avenue in Coralville, in front of the Visitors and Convention Bureau for Iowa City and Coralville.

“A great tribute to my coaching staff through the years, the players, the fans,” Fry said today. University of Iowa president Bruce Harreld was on hand for today’s (Friday’s) ceremony. “Just watching him gaze at that statue that’s going to be in our community memorializing all he’s done,” Harreld said. “He, in many ways, brought back winning and the winning attitude to the University of Iowa and all the citizens of the state.”

Harreld and Fry made their comments in video posted on the twitter account for The Iowa Hawkeyes. Fry, who is 87, was inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Fry coached at S-M-U and North Texas State before he was hired to guide the Hawkeye program. His lifetime coaching record was 232 wins, 178 losses and 10 ties.

Heavy traffic predicted for holiday weekend travel & home football games at Iowa & ISU

News, Sports

September 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The last holiday weekend of summer is just ahead and many thousands of Iowans will be on the road. Extra law officers are being called in to keep an eye out for speeders, drunks and other lawbreakers. Iowa State Patrol Lieutenant Kelly Hindman of the Fort Dodge office offers some advice to keep from getting pulled over. “Obey the posted speed limits and travel at prudent speeds,” Hindman says. “This time of year, there’s lots of road construction still going on and trips are often delayed. Just be patient to get to your destination and don’t be in such a rush.”

One of the most important and easiest ways to save lives is simply by fastening your seat belt.  “We’ve had about 43% of Iowa’s fatalities this year have been not belted,” Hindman says. “We’re certainly encouraging everyone to put on their seat belt before they begin any trip, short or long.”

In addition to the holiday travel putting extra traffic on the roads, there are home college football games in both Iowa City and Ames on Saturday.

Callahan solid again as Packers fall to Chiefs, 17-7

Sports

September 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Rookie quarterback Joe Callahan capped a strong preseason by throwing for 143 yards and a touchdown as the Green Bay Packers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 17-7 in their preseason finale Thursday night. Callahan played almost the entire way in a game featuring second- and third-teamers on both sides. The product of Division III Wesley College has been trying to earn the No. 3 job behind Aaron Rodgers and Brett Hundley, who has been sidelined by an ankle injury this preseason.

The only first-stringers to see much of the field were specialists on both teams. They needed some practice, too. After the Chiefs’ third straight three-and-out in the first quarter, Dustin Colquitt’s punt was blocked by Green Bay wide receiver Ty Montgomery. The Packers only needed two plays for Callahan to hit tight end Jared Cook for the game’s opening touchdown.

The game also featured the debut of Green Bay punter Jacob Schum, who was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay this week. Schum replaced veteran punter Tim Masthay in a surprising roster move. Kansas City running back Knile Davis, who could be traded by the weekend, ran 15 times for 58 yards and a touchdown. The former third-round draft pick also caught a pass out of the backfield. Darrin Reaves also had 63 yards rushing and a touchdown for Kansas City.

Atlantic Football eyes 2-0 start at Shenandoah

Sports

September 1st, 2016 by admin

The Atlantic Trojan Football team travels to Shenandoah Friday night to take on the Mustangs with an eye on a 2-0 start to the season. The welcomed new Head Coach Mike McDermott with a thrilling 16-14 home win in week one over Clarinda. The winning margin thanks to a field goal with under a minute to play in the game.Coach McDermott said it was nice to get that opening win and was proud of the way the Trojans played, especially their attention to the details.

The Shenandoah Mustangs suffered an overtime loss to AHSTW 13-6 in week one and their Head Coach Brian Diekmann said his team is hungry for a win.

Shenandoah beat the Trojans at home last year 55-19 behind star Quarterback Jake Johnson who racked up 181 rushing yards, 96 passing yards, and accounted for 3 touchdowns in the win.  Coach Diekmann knows Johnson was a big player to replace but likes what he has seen from Jordan Miller so far.

The Trojans will be looking to slow down the Shenandoah ground game and Coach McDermott knows their option attack presents a challenge for his defense.

Coach McDermott thinks the Trojan offense will improve as the season moves along but doesn’t need them to rack up big numbers if they play sound football.  He says the task this week will be getting in front of the Mustang linebackers.

Coach McDermott is excited to see how is team reacts to their first road trip of the year.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and the Mustangs Friday night here on KJAN.  Tune in to hear more from Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45pm. Then catch our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm, followed by the Dvorak Tire and Service Pre-Game Show at 6:30pm, and Kickoff in Shenandoah is at 7:00pm. Packers, Chiefs leave battle to backups in preseason finale

Sports

September 1st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Only the most ardent fans of the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers will likely care much about what transpires in their preseason game at Arrowhead Stadium tonight (Thursday) night. Then again, the guys on the field will care very much about what happens. The Chiefs and Packers are expected to play few, if any, starters in their fourth preseason game, turning the proceedings over to their backups instead.

And in some cases, not even the backups will see game action – the Chiefs are resting quarterbacks Alex Smith and Nick Foles, and Aaron Rodgers and ailing Packers backup Brett Hundley will enjoy the night in a ball cap. Some coaches have said they will play their starters for a series or quarter Thursday night, if only to knock off the last vestiges of rust.

But the Chiefs and Packers are content with the statuses of their veteran cores, so much so that many of players on both teams have skipped the preseason entirely. Pre-game coverage begins at 6-p.m. on KJAN, with the kick-off at 7.

Nieuwenhuis homers, Garza throws gem as Brewers beat Cards

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered and Matt Garza pitched into the eighth inning, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-1 victory Wednesday night, ending a six-game losing streak. Nieuwenhuis belted a three-run homer off Luke Weaver (1-2) in the third inning. Garza (5-6) turned in his longest outing of the season, giving up one run and three hits in seven-plus innings while walking two and striking out eight.

Garza allowed the first two batters in the eighth to reach base before being replaced by Carlos Torres, who pitched out of the jam but not before loading the bases with two outs. Yadier Molina hit a solo home run in the fourth for the Cardinals. Weaver, making his fourth major league start, gave up three runs and four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out 10, including four straight at one point. Tyler Thornburg notched his sixth save in 10 chances.
