Iowa will try to shock the college football world on Saturday night when the 16th ranked Hawkeyes play number-two Michigan in the Big Ten Championship in Lucas Oil Stadium. The Hawkeyes are a better than three touchdown underdog and coach Kirk Ferentz says the first key is to avoid an early knockout.

Ferentz says the Hawkeyes must perform at a high level in all phases.

Ferentz on the formula it will take for the Hawkeyes to win.

Ferentz says the Hawkeyes know what they are up against and relish the role of underdog.

AMES, Iowa – Six members of the Iowa State women’s soccer team earned CSC Academic All-District honors for the 2023 season, the College Sports Communicators announced. It marks the second straight season that six Cyclones earned the honor.

Iowa State’s six honorees include Maddie Brant, Alex Campana, Olivia Edwards, Mira Emma, Abigail Miller and Hanna Reid. It marked the second straight season that Edwards, Emma and Miller made the Academic All-District Team.

To qualify for All-District recognition, each student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 GPA and demonstrate athletic excellence while meeting a game participation threshold.

“We are really proud of our women for earning this honor and are completely unsurprised by it,” said Head Coach Matt Fannon. “Each of them embodies exactly what it means to be a Cyclone every day on and off the field and they are all wonderful representatives of our program.”

A fifth-year senior team captain, Brant picked up her first CSC Academic All-District honor, starting all 18 matches for the Cyclones. Brant had one assist on the season, tallying one point and played 1,079 minutes of action.

Campana, a fifth-year transfer from Marquette, earned her first CSC Academic All-District recognition after a year with the Cyclones. She played in all 18 matches, starting 11 and playing 1,068 minutes. She recorded one assist for one point and notched 23 shots on the year.

For the second straight season, Edwards earned Academic All-District honors with the Cyclones. A four-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll as well as a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team member, Edwards got it done both on the pitch and classroom again this season. She ended her year with one score and one assist, playing 1,473 minutes.

Emma, like Edwards, earned her second straight Academic All-District honor. The fifth-year team captain recorded 14 points, netting five goals and a team-high four assists. Along with being a two-time member of the CSC Academic All-District Team, Emma has also been an All-Big 12 First Team member three times and has been on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll four times.

After earning her first CSC Academic All-District honor last year at Arkansas State, Miller was recognized again for her academic prowess as a Cyclone. Miller played in 17 contests for the Cyclones, making 16 starts. She tallied five points on the season, scoring a pair of goals and recording one assist. She was the third-highest point scorer on the team.

A two-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll member, Reid added an Academic All-District honor to her resume. The senior from Eagle Mountain, Utah, played in all 18 matches for the Cyclones and tallied her first career point against Houston, assisting on a Salomé Prat goal.

The AHSTW Vikings boys’ basketball team didn’t start the season the way they wanted to. On Tuesday night the Vikings hosted the Riverside Bulldogs a team they had won 18 consecutive games against, but this Bulldogs team is different from years past. The Vikings a young team that has only 1 senior is still learning and growing together as a team. Riverside was able to jump out to lead after the first quarter and the Vikings could never get back into it. Head Coach of the Vikings G.G. Harris gave all the credit to the Bulldogs and their players for making timely plays whenever they were needed and said it was an uphill battle trying to fight back.

Although AHSTW took a tough loss there were lots of positives to take away from this one, and probably none bigger or more encouraging for the Vikings coach staff was the play of sophomore big man Kaden Jorgensen who had 12 points and 7 rebounds in his varsity debut. Coach Harris said you could see Jorgensen improving and getting more comfortable possession by possession.

The page turns quickly for the Vikings as tonight they are on the road at a 2-0 Underwood Eagles team. Underwood has averaged over 70 points over their first two games and allow just 35 a game. Coach Harris knows is well aware of how good a team Underwood is and how well coached they are.

As the Vikings travel to Underwood in their second game of the season the odds will be stacked against the Vikings. Coach G.G. Harris says to get the first win of the year tonight that the Vikings will have to own the glass on both ends of the floor and have to take care of the basketball.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four patients from Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent (PMCH) have been selected as the Honorary Kid Captains for the 2023 Big Ten Football Championship Game presented by Discover, the conference announced Friday. Mallory Amara and Drew Shouse will assist the Big Ten East champion Michigan Wolverines, while Kayson McPhearson and Ellie Zuver will aid the Big Ten West champion Iowa Hawkeyes.

Chosen by the children’s hospital’s care team to serve as honorary captains, each will receive a commemorative jersey, special recognition during the game and the opportunity to participate in the pregame coin toss at midfield of Lucas Oil Stadium.

Mallory Amara was playing with a toy when the battery fell out. Before her parents were even aware of what had happened, Mallory had put the battery in her mouth and swallowed it. She came running to her mom, who noticed she was not acting like herself. Mallory could not stay awake. Her mom asked her if she was okay, and Mallory said, “No.” Her parents rushed Mallory to the ER, where an X-ray confirmed a battery was stuck in her throat. They were told to go directly to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. Mallory was taken into surgery, the battery was removed and an NG tube was inserted. Her esophagus was burned but Mallory is doing well and eating solids again. Her family is grateful to Rachel Dunn, MD, BS, a Pediatric Gastroenterologist, and the staff at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

Kayson McPhearson was diagnosed with kidney failure at a young age and placed on dialysis for six months at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was placed on the transplant donor list, and his family’s prayers were answered when Kayson had a kidney transplant in 2019. Kayson is a very active boy who likes to play with his brother and sister and ride on his four-wheeler and dirt bike. He continues to see his kidney doctor at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital for follow-up care and brings a light to everyone in the room with his contagious smile and personality.

Drew Shouse had his first open heart surgery at just five days old. He was too high-risk to send back to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) until his second open heart surgery so he stayed in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) until he was seven months old. After 263 days in the PICU he finally was able to go home on a ventilator and had all types of accessories for his health needs. He had speech, occupational and physical therapy in home, and a third open heart surgery in October of 2017 at 2.5 years old. Following a third open heart surgery, he became completely ventilator-free at age five, then was able to have his trach removed the following year. Drew is doing fantastic and his parents are grateful to the amazing pediatric team at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital and for the care they have received over the years.

Ellie Zuver was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (no left ventricle in her heart) around 24 weeks. After Ellie’s birth, she was intubated and immediately brought to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. At her post-natal echocardiogram, it was determined that she also had an intact atrial septum, which made her first surgery, the Norwood procedure, quite emergent. She was transferred from the NICU to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), underwent the Norwood procedure on her third day of life and was intubated for more than two weeks. She spent her first seven weeks in the NICU and PICU before having her second surgery, the Glenn procedure, in October 2019. She had her third surgery, the Fontan procedure, in June 2022 and spent a total of five weeks in the hospital. Ellie had a seizure and stroke two days post-op but has had no lingering issues. She recently visited her neurologist and does not need to be seen for another year. The family is beyond grateful for the care and compassion they have received at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

Missouri Valley won the team championship with 162.5 points. Clarinda had 79 for second and Treynor scored 73 in third. Glenwood finished with 67 and Audubon had 64 were fourth and fifth.

The Lady Reds had eight champions in Jordan Buffum (120), Lea Gute (130), Brooklyn Lange (135), Preslee Mass (140), Riley Marcum (145), Nicole Olsen (155), Maya Zappia (190), and Jocelyn Buffum (235), all winning their weight classes.

Riverside Carly Henderson went 3-0 on day one and will compete in the semifinals at 120 pounds. Henderson won her first two matches by fall and picked up a major decision in the quarterfionals.

(Radio Iowa) – D-N-R State Deer Biologist, Jace Elliott, says the numbers from early hunts show the first firearm deer season that begins this Saturday should be comparable to previous years. “This year where we’re tracking along pretty closely with last year’s harvest to date,” he says. Nearly 30-thousand deer have been taken in the early seasons that include archery and youth hunts. The gun season has expanded from the original shotgun-only, to now include muzzleloaders, handguns ad, most recently, rifles. The gun seasons are always the most popular, with some 100-thousand hunters expected to take part. “These two seasons end up taking of about 50 percent of our deer harvest throughout all of our seasons, just in these two firearm seasons,” Elliott says. “So we definitely expect as long as weather cooperates to have a very successful season.”

He says hunters shouldn’t have trouble finding deer in most of the state. “Statewide, we’re at a stable to slightly increasing level and have been for the past several years. There’s of course areas in the state that we’re actively trying to recover populations, particularly far western, and northwestern Iowa,” Elliott says. “And then of course, there’s also areas where we’re working on reducing deer numbers to some degree, but for the most part, we’re very happy with population levels in Iowa.”

Elliott says there has been some concern about the E-H-D outbreak and the impact on the deer population in Iowa. He says there was a severe E-H-D outbreak, statewide this year, and particularly in the southeast region. “The message to hunters is that this disease can have severe local impacts, we’re talking about the property scale or the section scale,” he says, “but at a county level even though this was one of our more severe outbreaks, it does not seem that any particular county has been affected to the level that would require management intervention.”

Elliott says the counties that are hit hard with E-H-D but have ample deer populations to start with, tend to recover in just a matter of a few years. The first deer gun season starts Saturday (Dec. 2) and runs through Wednesday December 6th. The second deer gun season is December 9th through the 17th.

Thursday night the Griswold basketball team struggled to consistently score and lost by a wide margin to the Southwest Valley Timberwolves 77-27.

Griswold was up 10-7 halfway through the first quarter, but lost steam at the end with a 22-10 Timberwolves at the end of the first. The pressure and missed shots continued for Griswold and they were down 43-18 at half. The Tigers only scored 9 more points in the second half and the Timberwolves shots kept pouring in.

Alex Morgan had a strong night for the Timberwolves with 24 points. His 5 baskets in the second half  helped solidify the Southwest Valley win. Roman Keefe added 19 as Southwest Valley improved to 2-0 on the season. They stay on the road and head to Mount Ayr Friday night.

Peyton Cook was the leading scorer for the Tigers with 13 points. Griswold starts the season 0-1 and Head Coach Matthew Spunaugle told his players to keep their head up despite the loss.

Griswold will stay at home for a blue out game on Friday and face a tough Riverside team on Monday.

Tipoff for the Riverside matchup is set for 7:30 p.m.
