Iowa State seeking strong finish after ugly 1-6 start

Sports

October 25th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s first season under coach Matt Campbell will end in a month. How the Cyclones perform over the next four weeks could be a strong indicator of where they’re headed. Iowa State (1-6, 0-4 Big 12) will almost certainly finish with a losing record for the seventh year in a row. But the Cyclones still have a lot to play for over the next five games, even if that’s mostly just playing time in 2017 and beyond.

Iowa State, which had a much-needed bye last weekend, hosts Kansas State (4-3, 2-2) on Saturday and No. 16 Oklahoma just five days later. Campbell says the aim has been to “stay the course,” when he was asked what he wanted to see from his team in its remaining games. He says they haven’t talked about winning games — rather, they’ve talked about the process it takes to be successful.

Chiefs’ Ware learned lessons from Lynch while in Seattle

Sports

October 25th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ Spencer Ware learned a lot from Marshawn Lynch during his short time in Seattle. For one thing, Ware learned to generally keep his mouth shut. For another, he learned to run like a beast. Ware, who ran for 77 yards and caught a 48-yard touchdown pass in KC’s 24-21 win Sunday says Lynch was “always demonstrating” so Ware was able to see his work ethic day in and day out. Coach Andy Reid says Ware has “great feet and vision.”

When Ware signed a future contract with the Chiefs on New Year’s Eve after his first two seasons in Seattle, Ware got with it a fresh start. He earned a spot on the team as a hybrid fullback in training camp, then earned important carries when four-time Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles went down with a knee injury.

The Chiefs thought so highly of his performance that they signed him to a two-year, $3.6 million contract that must have seemed unfathomable considering where he’d been a year earlier.

Alex Smith leads Chiefs past mistake-prone Saints, 27-21

Sports

October 23rd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes in another efficient outing, Daniel Sorensen returned an interception of Drew Brees for another touchdown and the Kansas City Chiefs held off the mistake-prone New Orleans Saints 27-21 on Sunday. Spencer Ware ran for 77 yards to go with his 46-yard touchdown reception, and Tyreek Hill made an acrobat 38-yard TD catch to help the Chiefs (4-2) win their ninth straight at home.

Brees got the Saints (2-4) within 24-21 with his touchdown pass to Brandon Coleman with 2:33 left, but the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds. Kansas City added a 41-yard field goal, and the Saints could do nothing in the final 28 seconds to change the outcome.

The Chiefs’ Andy Reid coached his 300th game Sunday. Most of those were over his 14 seasons in Philadelphia, where he was 140-102-1. He is now 36-21 in his fourth season in Kansas City.

Dunne shines in 1st start, N. Iowa beats Missouri St. 61-7

Sports

October 22nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Eli Dunne threw for 418 yards and two touchdowns in his debut as a starter as Northern Iowa dominated Missouri State 61-7 on Saturday. Dunne, a sophomore, completed 25 of 33 attempts with no interceptions. Northern Iowa has not had anyone throw for 400-plus yards since Pat Grace threw for 445 against South Dakota in 2009. Dunne threw for 308 yards and one score in the first half.

UNI (3-4, 2-2 Missouri Valley Conference), which had lost its last two games by a total of seven points, took control early. Elijah Campbell and Duncan Ferch each intercepted passes, running them back for scores in the fourth quarter. A.J. Allen also picked off a pass as the Panthers had their second game this season with three interceptions. They now have 13 on the year.

UNI had 556 total yards while limiting Missouri State (3-4, 1-3) to 189.
