Chiefs owner Hunt open-minded about Raiders relocation

Sports

November 7th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs owner Clark Hunt says he has an open mind about the Raiders moving to Las Vegas. Hunt spoke to a handful of reporters before Kansas City played Jacksonville on Sunday, and told The Associated Press “that probably five years ago I would have been skeptical that it could happen.”

Hunt said the league is doing research on the move, including what kind of fan support the Raiders would have in Las Vegas. And while he wants to reserve judgment until that report is delivered, Hunt did say that he expects Oakland to ask permission to move and the league to address it in the coming months.

The Raiders would need 24 of 32 owners to approve relocation.

Cubs decline Hammel’s 2017 option

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have declined Jason Hammel’s option for the 2017 season, making the pitcher a free agent. The World Series champions announced the move on Sunday. The option was worth $12 million, and Hammel gets a $2 million buyout. The 34-year-old Hammel went 15-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 30 starts this year. The 6-foot-6 right-hander is 33-22 with a 3.59 ERA in 78 starts over two stints with the Cubs.

Hammel did not pitch in the playoffs. The Cubs got Mike Montgomery in a July trade with Seattle, and he likely will replace Hammel in the rotation. Hammel first signed with the Cubs in February 2014. He went 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 17 starts before he was traded to Oakland in the deal that sent shortstop Addison Russell to Chicago.

He re-signed with Chicago for a $20 million, two-year contract in December 2014.

Chiefs shut down Bortles, Jaguars to escape with 19-14 win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs stuffed the offensively inept Jacksonville Jaguars on fourth down with less than 2 minutes left deep in their own territory on Sunday, preserving a 19-14 victory despite finishing without five offensive starters. Nick Foles threw for 187 yards and a first-half touchdown toss to Albert Wilson, and helped to set up four field goals by Cairo Santos, as Kansas City (6-2) won its 10th consecutive home game.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars (2-6) couldn’t overcome four turnovers – including a fumble at the goal line in the fourth quarter – in their first game with quarterback coach Nathaniel Hackett directing the offense .

Blake Bortles threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns with a pick, showing little improvement after a week spent with his personal coach, Adam Dedeaux . His wide receivers hardly helped him, dropping several passes, including an early fourth-down throw that cost Jacksonville a chance at points.

Chiefs running back Knile Davis played after re-signing with Kansas City on Saturday. Davis was traded to Green Bay three weeks ago, cut after two games and signed with the New York Jets. He was cut again hours later, allowing him to return to Kansas City.

UP NEXT: The Chiefs expect to have Alex Smith back when they visit Carolina.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Briar Cliff University is dropping its plan to purchase part of a Sioux City park for its sports teams to practice on after some neighbors objected. The Sioux City Journal reports the university said Friday that it will end its effort to buy part of Headington Park.

The university had been talking with city officials about using four acres of the park as a practice field for its football and soccer teams. University officials said they believed their plan would have benefited the community, but they didn’t want to move forward over the objections.

Chiefs bring back running back Knile Davis after odd odyssey

Sports

November 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have brought back Knile Davis, completing a bizarre odyssey for the running back that began with a trade from Kansas City to Green Bay and included a fleeting moment with the New York Jets.

Defensive end David King was also promoted to the active roster Saturday, while Parker Ehinger was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury and fellow offensive lineman Jordan Devey was waived. Davis was traded to the Packers when the Chiefs were flush with running backs. But since then, Spencer Ware sustained a concussion and Jamaal Charles had surgery to repair damaged cartilage in his right knee.

Kansas City signed Bishop Sankey for depth, but he’s had only a couple of days to learn the offense. That means it’s possible that Davis, who has spent three-plus seasons with the Chiefs, will be active for today’s (Sunday’s) game against Jacksonville.

Kickoff for the game begins at Noon. We will join pre-game show following our church services, here on KJAN.

Royals decline contract for Hochevar

Sports

November 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have declined their $7 million option on pitcher Luke Hochevar. The right-hander’s season was cut short by surgery in August. He received a $500,000 buyout and is eligible to sign anywhere beginning Tuesday.

The 33-year-old missed the 2014 season after Tommy John surgery, but was instrumental in the Royals World Series victory the following year. He was 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 40 appearances this season.

No. 20 Penn State hammers Iowa 41-14

November 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Saquon Barkley accounted for 211 all-purpose yards, scored two touchdowns and No. 20 Penn State beat Iowa 41-14 on Saturday night. Quarterback Trace McSorley completed 11 of 18 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns and added 40 rushing yards and another score on 14 carries for the Nittany Lions, who won their fifth straight Big Ten game for the first time since 2011.

C.J. Beathard completed 18 of 26 passes for 204 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Hawkeyes (5-4, 3-3). He was sacked four times. Running back Akrum Wadley caught a touchdown for Iowa and Jerminic Smith hauled in another with 6:30 to play.

The Hawkeyes hopes of competing for the West Division title for a second straight year took a big hit with No. 8 Wisconsin and Minnesota — both two-loss teams coming into the week — winning on Saturday. The Hawkeyes still have to face Michigan and Nebraska. A trip to Illinois two weeks from now will be Iowa’s best shot at bowl eligibility.

The Hawks host No. 3 Michigan (9-0, 6-0) next Saturday night (Nov. 12th), in a prime-time game at Kinnick Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7-p.m.

Malloy’s 3 rushing TDs help N. Iowa beat Indiana St. 39-6

Sports

November 5th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Michael Malloy ran for a career-high three touchdowns, Marcus Weymiller had 171 yards rushing and Northern Iowa beat Indiana State 39-6 on Saturday. Weymiller, a sophomore who had moved from running back to wide receiver this spring and came in with just one career rushing attempt, had 17 carries including a 57-yard run and an 11-yard run on back-to-back plays to set up Malloy’s second TD, a 5-yarder, that made it 20-3 with 6:58 left in the first half.

Ricky Neal returned an interception 18 yards to the UNI 47 and Colton Howell’s 40-yard pass to Jalen Rima set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Malloy to give Northern Iowa (4-5, 3-3 Missouri Valley Conference) a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

After Rondell Green returned the ensuing kickoff 43 yards, Indiana State (3-6, 2-5) went three-and-out. Rima fielded the subsequent punt and raced up the right sideline before cutting back across the field for a 97-yard touchdown — the longest punt return in UNI history. The Sycamores had minus-20 yards rushing in the second quarter and Northern Iowa built a 28-3 halftime lead.
