Northern Iowa opens with 74-37 win over Coe College

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Bennett Koch and Jeremy Morgan scored 11 points apiece and Northern Iowa cruised to a 74-37 season-opening win over Coe College on Saturday. The Panthers had an early 17-0 run to build a 22-4 lead and their Division III foe never mounted a challenge. It was 45-18 at the half as the Kohawks shot 29 percent and had 10 turnovers before the break. Morgan had all of his points during the run, including three 3-pointers.

Northern Iowa shot 54.5 percent in the first half and 53 for the game. Northern Iowa got 45 points from reserves, including 10 from Isaiah Brown. Coe finished with 18 turnovers that led to 22 points for the Panthers, who also had a 32-10 advantage on inside scoring. Matt Vonderhaar had 10 points for Coe, which only had one free throw in the game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs say linebacker Justin Houston has been ruled out for Sunday’s game at Carolina. Houston had surgery to repair his ACL in February but came off the physically unable to perform list this week.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has hit Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce with a $24,000 fine after his protest of a non-interference call when he chucked his towel toward an official. Teammmate Daniel Sorensen also drew a $9,100 fine for a late hit.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Monte Morris had a double-double with 21 points and 11 assists in No. 24 Iowa State’s 113-71 shelling of Savannah State last night, 113-71. Naz Mitrou-Long added 18 points with 10 rebounds and 7 assists after redshirting last season.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Marcus Foster scored 19 points while Maurice Watson Jr. added 17 for No. 22 Creighton in an 89-82 win over UMKC. Khyri Thomas had 16 points and Justin Patton had 12 points along with 8 rebounds.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Trey Burch-Manning scored 24 points with 11 rebounds for South Dakota in a 79-74 win over Drake. Matt Mooney had 21 points for the Coyotes while Reed Timmer had 17 points to lead Drake.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Peter Jok scored 27 points to lead Iowa past Kennesaw State 91-74. Ahmad Wagner had 12 points and four blocks for the Hawkeyes.
