KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Ryan Succop kicked a 53-yard field goal into the wind as time expired Sunday to give the Tennessee Titans a 19-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on a frigid afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium. Succop, who spent the first part of his career with Kansas City, came up short on his first try at the winner, but Chiefs coach Andy Reid had called a timeout just before the snap. Given a second chance, Succop knocked it through with a couple feet to spare as the Titans poured off the bench to celebrate.
The Titans’ rallied from a 17-7 hole, and Derrick Henry’s second touchdown got Tennessee (8-6) within 17-16 with just over three minutes left. But Titans coach Mike Mularkey went for the 2-point conversion and the lead. Marcus Mariota was pressured immediately and his pass never reached the end zone. But the Chiefs (10-4), trying to clinch a playoff spot, were unable to pick up enough first downs to run out the clock and Tennessee got the ball back with a minute left. With no timeouts, Mariota calmly found Rishard Matthews for 19 yards and Delanie Walker twice to set up Succop’s field-goal attempt.
The dramatic late-game turn came after Tennessee squandered plenty of chances early in the game. Matthews fumbled within sight of the goal line in the first half, ending the Titans’ streak of four straight games without a turnover. And Mariota, a Hawaii native, had plenty of trouble dealing with the cold weather, fumbling the ball away and throwing an interception to Ron Parker .
It was 1 degree at kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium, with a wind chill of minus-19, making it the coldest game in Kansas City since the franchise began keeping records in 1994. Still, the Chiefs got off to a hot start in the cold weather when Tyreek Hill faked like he was running an option play and took an inside handoff instead, running untouched 68 yards for a first-quarter touchdown. It was the sixth touchdown for the dynamic rookie in the last four weeks.
Smith added his touchdown later in the half, and Cairo Santos knocked through a field goal, but the Chiefs blew a couple of opportunities. They were repelled twice at the 1-yard line and came away without any points, and Smith threw an interception in the end zone early in the second half. Succop hit from 39 yards early in the fourth quarter make it a one-possession game, and the Titans promptly got the ball back and marched the other way, twice converting on third down and once on fourth to set up Henry’s 1-yard TD plunge. The 2-point conversion attempt was a disaster, but it wound up being moot. The Titans’ defense and Succop’s strong right leg made sure of it.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs placed veteran linebacker Derrick Johnson on injured reserve Saturday after he ruptured his Achilles tendon last week, and elevated defensive lineman David King from the practice squad. Kansas City plays the Tennessee Titans today (Sunday). We’ll have the game for you following our 11-a.m. church services (Noon kick-off) on KJAN.
Johnson hurt his Achilles tendon in the Chiefs’ win over Oakland on Dec. 8, but didn’t make a roster move until the weekend so they could keep their options open. They opted to bring King to the active roster because defensive lineman Kendall Reyes is questionable with a wrist injury.
D.J. Alexander and Terrance Smith are expected to replace Johnson on Sunday, though Frank Zombo could also factor into the mix. Ramik Wilson will take over the headset duties for Johnson.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Naz Mitrou-Long poured in a career-high 37 points and Iowa State held off Drake 97-80 on Saturday night, its seventh win in its last nine tries against in-state opponents. Monte Morris had 20 for the Cyclones (7-3), who finished with a 21-4 run to put away a game that was much tighter than most expected.
Mitrou-Long drilled a 3 to make it 85-78 with 3:25 left, and his corner 3 two minutes later allowed the Cyclone-heavy crowd to finally exhale. Mitrou-Long, who shot just 39 percent in Iowa State’s first nine games, was 14 of 18 from the floor and 8 of 12 on 3s. He also had six rebounds, five assists and just one turnover.
Billy Wampler scored 23 points for Drake (1-9), which remains winless against Division 1 opposition. But the Bulldogs were within a possession of the Cyclones for much of the second half.
The Iowa Hawkeye women can sweep the in-state series with a victory today (Sunday) at Drake. The Hawkeyes have won the last 14 games in the series.
Iowa coach Lisa Bluder says close games have been common in this series.
The men have their annual Big Four Classic in Des Moines but Drake coach Jennie Baranczyk is happy the women still play round robin.
Drake is 5-3 against a non conference schedule that Baranczyk says is designed to challenge her team.
Tip-time at the Knapp Center in Des Moines, is 2-p.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Peter Jok scored 21 points in his final game in his hometown and Iowa thumped rival Northern Iowa 69-46 Saturday for its third straight win.
Nicholas Baer had 11 points with 11 rebounds off the bench for the Hawkeyes (6-5), who jumped all over the slightly favored Panthers early and never let up. Iowa led 34-16 at halftime after a 16-3 run, and it pushed that lead to 49-24 early in the second half.
The win was Iowa’s biggest over Northern Iowa (5-5) since it beat the Panthers by 32 in 2000.
Jeremy Morgan scored 14 points and added nine rebounds for Northern Iowa, which shot just 27 percent. Morgan was 4 of 13 from the floor.
(Story from athletics.central.edu) PELLA — A stellar season by Central College wide receiver Sam Markham was punctuated Friday night with a spot on the D3football.com all-America squad’s third team.
Markham is the 36th all-American in program history and the first since free safety Jacob Edleman was bestowed with the honors in 2014. He’s the first offensive All-American for Central since offensive guard Nick Reed in 2006 and the first ever Central wide receiver to receive the honor.
A first-team all-Iowa Conference selection this season, Markham led all of Division III with 10.5 catches per game after snaring 105 passes. After racking up 1,215 receiving yards, Markham finished ninth nationally in that category. He also had 12 touchdown receptions on the year, giving him the 22nd most in the country.
The Dutch finished the season 8-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
The Western Iowa Conference held a weather shortened wrestling dual tournament on Friday night at Riverside High School in Oakland. The dual tournament was shortened to a five round, round robin format. Here are the match results from the event.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs pass rusher Justin Houston is questionable for Sunday’s game against Tennessee with soreness in his left knee, which he had surgically repaired in February. Houston missed practice with an illness earlier in the week before missing Thursday’s workout with the knee issue. He returned to the practice field Friday on a limited basis.
Cornerback Phillip Gaines did not practice this week and was ruled out with a knee injury that has caused him problems all season. Defensive lineman Kendall Reyes is also questionable with a wrist injury. The Chiefs were already planning around the loss of linebacker Derrick Johnson, who ruptured his Achilles tendon in last week’s win over the Raiders.
