Iowa gets $5M donation for Kinnick renovation project

Sports

January 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A University of Iowa benefactor has donated $5 million toward the renovation of Kinnick Stadium’s north end. The university announced Sunday, during Outback Bowl festivities in Tampa, Florida, that Ted and Deb Pacha had made a contribution to the $90 million project. In October the Board of Regents approved the project plans, which include a second deck for seating, new restrooms, expanded concourses and improved concessions. The project is expected to be finished before the 2019 season.

Ted Pacha said in a university news release that he and his wife “have a great passion for the mission of Iowa athletics and are extremely proud to take a leadership role in the Kinnick Edge Campaign.”

Tips on keeping that resolution to exercise

Sports

January 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Thousands of Iowans are likely headed to a gym today in hopes of keeping a New Year’s resolution to exercise and lose weight. Studies suggest around 80-percent of those people will fail or quit exercising by March. Alison Phillips, an assistant professor of psychology at ISU, has studied the behaviors of people who’ve been able to develop and maintain exercise as a habit. She suggests newcomers to exercise should choose an activity they might come to enjoy — even if that’s not the case at first.

“Know that, with practice, you will come to like it more. That’s the good news, but it’s not going to be easy to develop the habit,” Phillips says.

“The benefit of habit is once you have it, that is what’s easy to maintain. It’s still going to be tough at first, but choose something you find relatively enjoyable and know that the more you stick with it initially, the more you’re going to come to like it.”

Some people may never come to “enjoy” exercise, but Phillips suggests there are byproducts they might appreciate. “Stress reduction is a form of enjoyment, at least the way I’m speaking about it. So, you might not love your exercise, but if you feel better – less stress – while you’re doing it, that counts,” Phillips says.

Phillips’ study involved monitoring the activity levels for people just starting to work out along with those who had been exercising regularly for at least three months. The results were published in the journal Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology.

Preview: Iowa faces Florida today in Outback Bowl

Sports

January 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

It’s game day in Tampa as the Hawkeyes meet the Florida Gators in the Outback Bowl. Iowa is hoping to keep the winning streak they started at the end of the regular season going. Junior linebacker Josie Jewel says that’s been the focus in their preparation for this game — trying to get in the same routine that they had in the last couple of weeks where they had success. Senior defensive back Desmond King says they have to continue doing what they do best to stop Florida’s offense.

“Just taking pride in our values — being tough, smart and physical on the field — that’s something that we always buy into. And just go out there and play with that chip on our shoulders every game,” Kings says. Iowa’s offense has struggled during the season and faces a tough Florida defense, but King doesn’t think that makes it tougher on the Hawkeye defense. “I don’t think it is pressure, I think it’s just our job as a defense,” King says. “We are supposed to go out and do what you’ve got to do and get the ball back for the offense.”

If the Hawkeyes are able to break their recent pattern of falling behind early, and win against Florida, it would end a six-year run without a bowl game victory. Both Iowa and Florida come into the game at 8-4. Kickoff is at noon Iowa time today (Monday). Pre-game coverage begins at 10-a.m., on KJAN.

Pack take division, Lions extend season…Chiefs win division…Falcons get a bye

DETROIT (AP) — The Green Bay Packers won the NFC North with their sixth straight win as Aaron Rodgers threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-24 victory at Detroit. Davante Adams hauled in two TD passes to help the Packers end up 10-6. Matthew Stafford passed for 347 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions who clinched an NFC playoff berth when the Giants knocked off Washington, 19-10.

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas City clinched the AFC West title with a 37-27 victory at San Diego and Oakland’s 24-6 loss at Denver. Alex Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Chiefs finished 12-4. Rookie Tyreek Hill padded the lead with a 95-yard punt return for a TD in the third quarter.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have earned themselves a week off as they clinched a first-round bye with a 38-32 victory against New Orleans. Matt Ryan was 27 of 36 for 331 yards and four touchdowns, leaving him with a franchise-record 4,944 yards, 38 touchdowns and just seven interceptions for the 11-5 Falcons. Saints quarterback Drew Brees (breez) became the first player in league history to throw for 5,000 yards five times.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers have fired coach Mike McCoy following a second straight last-place finish. McCoy was 27-37 in four seasons at the helm, missing the playoffs the last three years. The announcement came after the team played what may have been its final game in San Diego, two weeks before the team must decide whether to head back to the Los Angeles area.

DENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak told his team after the game that he was stepping down, saying the grind of coaching was taking too big of a toll on his health. Kubiak missed one game this season because of health reasons after suffering a mini-stroke while coaching the Houston Texans in 2013. The 55-year-old Kubiak leaves with two years left on his contract and one year after guiding Denver to a Super Bowl win over Carolina.

Chargers fire coach Mike McCoy after 2nd last-place finish

Sports

January 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers have fired Mike McCoy following a second straight last-place finish in the AFC West and a third straight season out of the playoffs. The team announced McCoy’s firing about an hour after the Chargers lost 37-27 to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

McCoy had said in a postgame news conference he hoped to be back next year. He won’t get that chance. McCoy was 27-37 in four seasons. John Spanos, the president of football operations, says in a statement that “our team’s disappointing performance has not matched this team’s potential and has fallen short of the demanding standards that we seek to impose throughout our organization.”

Evansville controls Northern Iowa in 70-58 win

Sports

January 1st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Christian Benzon and Jaylon Brown each scored 17 points in leading Evansville to a 70-58 win against Northern Iowa on Sunday. Evansville (10-5, 1-1 Missouri Valley) never trailed. Bennett Koch’s jumper brought Northern Iowa to within 21-16 with 3:21 remaining before half, but Evansville went on a 13-4 run and led 34-20 at the break.

Brown sandwiched a jumper and a layup between back-to-back 3s by Jaiveon Eaves to start the run. Ryan Taylor’s 3 pushed Evansville’s lead to 45-25 with 12:58 to play. Evansville shot 6 for 11 from 3-point range (55 percent) compared to 5 for 23 (22 percent) for the Panthers.

Jeremy Morgan led the Panthers (5-8, 0-2) with 16 points and Juwan McCloud contributed 13. The all-time series is even at 25 after Evansville won its fifth straight — and seventh in last eight games — against Northern Iowa.

Smith, Chiefs win AFC West title with win over Chargers

Sports

January 1st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Alex Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and the Kansas City Chiefs clinched the AFC West title and a first-round playoff bye with a 37-27 victory Sunday against the Chargers in perhaps the final NFL game in San Diego. The Chiefs (12-4) clinched the division with the win and Oakland’s loss at Denver.

For the second straight year, the Chargers were playing perhaps their final game in San Diego. Chargers chairman Dean Spanos has until Jan. 15 to decide whether to move the team to the Los Angeles area and join the Rams in a stadium scheduled to open in Inglewood in 2019. A Chargers-written ballot measure seeking $1 billion in hotel occupancy taxes to help fund a new downtown stadium was soundly defeated on Nov. 8.  The Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time” played on the PA during a break in the action after a Chiefs field goal made it 37-20 late in the game.

Also uncertain is Chargers coach Mike McCoy’s future. The Chargers have finished last in the AFC West two straight seasons and have missed the playoffs for three straight years under McCoy. McCoy is 27-37 in four seasons, with the Chargers having lost 23 of their last 32 games. They’ve also lost 13 of their last 14 AFC West games dating to late in the 2014 season.

Chargers tight end Antonio Gates tied Tony Gonzalez for the most touchdown catches in NFL history by a tight end with 111. Gonzalez spent his first 12 seasons of his career with the Chiefs before finishing with the Atlanta Falcons.

INJURIES: Chiefs S Eric Berry left with an ankle injury in the second half. For the Chargers, safety Darrell Stuckey left with a knee injury, linebacker Christopher Landrum suffered a concussion and guard Orlando Franklin had a shoulder injury.
