The Atlantic Girls basketball team struggled to put together any momentum in a road loss at Glenwood 51-37 on Tuesday night.  The Trojans struggled to find consistent scoring and take care of the basketball but still found themselves in a two point game at halftime. But the second half would see Glenwood grab just enough of a run to pull out of reach for Atlantic.  The Rams outscored the Trojans 13-4 in the third quarter and that was enough to push them to the win as Atlantic didn’t catch many breaks all night.

Nicole Shuppan led Glenwood with 20 points in the victory and the Rams picked up their second win of the season overall, both against the Trojans.

Atlantic was led by Baylee Newell with 12 points and Catherine Leonard with 11 as they are still searching for their first win of the year.  The Trojans travel to face a tough Lewis Central team on Friday.

The Atlantic Trojans came up with a huge third quarter and picked up a big Hawkeye Ten road win on Tuesday night at Glenwood in Boys basketball 68-62. The Trojans got off to a bit of a slow start against the Rams as Nate Mohr hit a couple of threes early but Atlantic never rattled. The Trojans trailed by two at the end of the first quarter and four at half.  Then Atlantic lit up the scoreboard for 28 points in the third quarter to take a 59-45 lead into the final period where they did enough to hang on.  Atlantic Head Coach Alan Jenkins was proud of the way his team handled themselves throughout the game.

Senior leader Garrett Franken only had four points in the first half but found a number of ways to impact the game before erupting for 12 points in the big third quarter run. Coach Jenkins was proud of the way Franken eased himself into scoring and not forcing anything.  He also said the difference was Franken and Scott Leonard’s rebounding effort throughout.

Franken said he knew it was going to be an intense atmosphere and all the rebounding work in practice paid off.

Franken finished with 21 points on the night. Scott Leonard had another huge game on the block for Atlantic and dropped in 22 points to lead the team.  Atlantic is now 5-1 in the conference and 8-3 overall. The Trojans will now prepare for a big home game on Friday against league leading Lewis Central.

Nate Mohr led all scorers on the night with 32 points for the Rams. Glenwood falls to 2-3 in the conference and 5-4 overall. The Rams next travel to St. Albert on Friday.

The Atlantic Trojans Girls and Boys Basketball teams will be in Glenwood tonight for a Hawkeye Ten doubleheader and we’ll have coverage of both varsity games on KJAN. The Girls game is scheduled for a 6:00pm tip-off and the boys will follow at about 7:30pm.

The Girls game will feature two teams that have struggled to find their way this season. The Rams are 1-8 with their lone win coming against Atlantic back on December 13th.  The Trojans are searching for their first win at 0-11. Glenwood is led by Nikki Schuppan averaging 11 points per game and the Trojans top scorer is Catherine Leonard averaging 10 points per contest.

The Boys game is another important battle in a very tough Hawkeye Ten Conference. The Trojans are 7-3 overall and 4-1 in league play, while the Rams are 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.  Atlantic won the first meeting of the year back on December 13th 72-67 in a great back and forth game. Atlantic is led by Garrett Franken averaging 24 points per game, he had 27 in the first meeting. Nate Mohr leads Glenwood with 22 points per outing, he had 21 last meeting.

The Audubon Boys Basketball team rolled to a win on Monday night on their home floor over Orient-Macksburg 83-57.  The Wheelers led opened up a 27-16 lead by the end of the first quarter and pushed their advantage to 25 points by halftime.

The Wheelers got 20 points apiece from Tyler Reibhoff and Tate Killeen in the win. Josh Lange added 14 for Audubon as they improve to 6-3 on the season.  Next up for the Wheelers is a Tuesday night trip to Tri-Center.

Orient-Macksburg was led by Dylan Nichols with 24 points. Nichols scored all 16 first quarter points for the Bulldogs. O-M falls to 4-7 on the season with the loss and next have a match-up with Twin Cedars on the schedule.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Matt Woodley has been fired as head coach of the NBA Development League’s Iowa Energy. The Energy announced Monday that Woodley had been relieved of his duties. Glynn Cyprien has been named interim head coach. Woodley had been Iowa’s coach since last May. Iowa is the D-League affiliate of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.

Cyprien joined the Grizzlies organization in 2014-15 as a basketball operations assistant/scout. He also had worked as a University of Memphis assistant coach from 2009-11 on Josh Pastner’s staff. He was an associate head coach at Texas A&M from 2009-11.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has named offensive line coach and son Brian Ferentz as his new offensive coordinator.

The Audubon Wheelers play host to the Orient-Macksburg Bulldogs in Boys Basketball tonight and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. The Wheelers come in with a record of 5-3 while the Bulldogs are 4-6 on the season.

Audubon is led by Tate Killeen who is averaging 21 points per game. Josh Lange is averaging 13 points and Tyler Reibhoff 12 points per outing as well for the Wheelers.  The Bulldogs have been led by Dylan Nichols and Noah Nichols averaging 22 and 16 points per game respectively.
