The Atlantic boys basketball team picked up a win over Clarinda Tuesday 68-40 at the Atlantic Middle School gym.  The Trojans jumped out to an early 22-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and bumped the lead up to a commanding 32 by half.  Atlantic Head Coach Alan Jenkins was pleased with how the Trojans played during stretches of the game.

Atlantic was led by 18 points from Scott Leonard and 15 from Austin Alexander, who grabbed is total with 5 threes in the first half.  Atlantic improves to 14-5 on the season and next have a cross-class meeting with Treynor on Friday.  Coach Jenkins talked about the seeding meeting for the postseason on Wednesday.

Clarinda was led by 15 points from Josh Degase as they fall to 3-17 on the year. Their next game is Friday at Creston.

The Atlantic girls basketball team picked up their second win of the season over Clarinda on Tuesday night at the Atlantic Middle School 55-45.  The Trojans got it done behind the aggressiveness of McKenzie Waters and conversions at the free throw line.  Waters led the team with 15 points and knocked in all but 2 of those from the free throw line.  Coach Kelly Juhl said his team followed the lead of the Freshman in the second quarter.

The Trojans were playing catch-up a good portion of the game and didn’t have a lead until 5:55 left in the third quarter. The Trojans ended up 29 for 37 at the free throw line to make the comeback possible.  McKenna DenBeste was another key contributor for Atlantic with 14 points and Coach Juhl said she showed her potential in the win.

Clarinda was led in the loss by Bryn Morgenstern with 15 points and Lauren Bair with 12.  The Cardinals fall to 3-17 on the season and they have a game Thursday home against Creston.

Atlantic now prepares for their first round district game against East Sac County in Sac City.  We’ll have that game for you on KJAN with tip-off set for 7:00pm Saturday.

Drake coach Jeff Rutter says the goal for his Bulldogs is a sixth place or high finish in the Missouri Valley Conference. Drake is currently seventh with a 5-7 record and the Bulldogs’ 79-72 loss at Bradley on Saturday was their third straight.

Drake is at home Tuesday night to host Valley co-leader Illinois State. The Redbirds are coming off a 41-point loss at Wichita State. Tip-time from the Knapp Center in Des Moines is a 7-p.m.

Iowa State looks to build off a stunning victory at Kansas when the Cyclones return to Big-12 play Tuesday night, at Texas. At 6-4, the Cyclones are tied for third in the league race with West Virginia. Iowa State coach Steve Prohm credits experience for his team’s play on the road. The Cyclones are 3-2 away from home in conference play.

Prohm says while the win at Kansas helped their post season profile there are still plenty of challenges remaining. He says the Cyclones need to focus on building off that win. Texas is 3-7 in the Big-12. Tip-time at Frank Erwin Special Events Center in Austin, Texas, is at 8-p.m. The game will be televised on ESP2.
