Tamin Lipsey a key in Iowa State’s 8-2 start

Sports

December 12th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State sophomore guard Tamin Lipsey is excelling in nearly every category during the Cyclones’ 8-2 start. The Ames native is second on the team in scoring and leads the team in rebounding, assists and steals. He had a school record eight steals in Sunday’s win over Prairie View A@M.

Many of his steals are leading to easy baskets.

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger says it is one of several school records Lipsey will set during his career.

Otzelberger says Lipsey’s instincts help him impact the game in so many areas.

The Cyclones return to action Sunday at home against Florida A@M.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa field hockey student-athletes Esme Gibson and Dionne van Aalsum have been named National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Americans, it was announced Tuesday by the NFHCA.

van Aalsum earned her first career All-America nod, as she was named to the first team. She is the first Hawkeye freshman to be named an All-American since Kristy Gleason in 1989. Gibson, a second team selection, was named an All-American for a third straight season, becoming the 10th Hawkeye to earn three honors.

They are the 104th and 105th All-Americans in program history.

Van Aalsum started all 19 games this season as a true freshman. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten selection played a key factor offensively as she led the nation with 28 goals, 62 points, 1.47 goals per game and 3.26 points per game.

The Castricum, Netherlands, native was the first Hawkeye to win Big Ten Freshman of the Year since Katie Birch in 2016 and the sixth Hawkeye overall.

Gibson earned her third straight All-America distinction after scoring two goals and tallying four assists in 19 starts. She was part of a defense that recorded eight shutouts. The midfielder, who started 96 of 98 games in her Hawkeye career, recorded 4,680 career minutes playing a key defensive role the past five seasons.

The Worcestershire, England, native garnered first-team All-Big Ten honors this season and was a second-team All-American in 2022 and a third-team All-American in 2021.

Iowa finished the 2023 season with a 13-6 overall record and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.

Wintertime can be a great time for bicycle riding in Iowa

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

December 12th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Leaders of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition are on a road trip this week with the goal of visiting 99 Iowa bike shops, giving a nod to Iowa’s senior U-S senator in calling this a “Full Grassley Tour.” Coalition executive director Luke Hoffman says they’re striving to highlight and support local bike shops and their economic impact while generating interest in cycling, even as winter looms.  “The Iowa Bicycle Coalition, being the statewide nonprofit organization around bicycle advocacy and shared safe roadways,” Hoffman says, “we, to that end, want to talk to cycle groups, bike shops, bike-friendly businesses about how we can be building community together.” As part of the tour, Hoffman says they’re meeting with cycling enthusiasts, which includes those who love riding in the cold weather with specially-equipped winter bikes. All of the visits center around local bike dealers and mechanics.

“It’s about doing local bike rides, visiting the bike shops,” he says, “and then talking to those business owners about how they can be part of our advocacy work, as well, in the legislative session.” Hoffman says the coalition is working to promote safe and accessible bicycling in Iowa through education, events, better policy, and growing a community of supporters. He says this week-long tour is part of that vision, to make bicycling in Iowa safe, enjoyable, and accessible for all.

“We’re doing it because we want to start something new and unique and that’s Support Your Local Bike Shop,” Hoffman says. “This time of the year is a time where bike shops typically see a little bit of a dip in business just because it’s not the summer months, it’s not close to RAGBRAI. So we want to show them some love ahead of the holiday season and let people know they can support their local bike shop this time of the year.”

The annual Iowa Bike Expo is scheduled for next month at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, one of the Midwest’s largest one-day bike shows. Later that same day, January 27th, will be the RAGBRAI Route Announcement Celebration.

Chargers Use Fast Start To Defeat Vikings

Sports

December 11th, 2023 by admin

The ACGC Chargers had a very similar start to the girls on the night as they would jump to a fast start fueled by a 2-1-2 full court press that allowed the Chargers to race out to a 10-2 lead just a minute into the game. The Chargers would have a 27-9 lead going into the second quarter where senior leader for the Chargers Lance Bunde exploded offensively. Bunde got it going from all three levels on the floor by taking it strong to the basket, using a couple nice shot fakes into his one dribble pull up, and of course hitting two long balls in the quarter. Bunde closed the first half by hitting two free throws, forcing a steal with less than five seconds remaining, and racing into the front court where he hit a 26-foot three pointer to take a 42-20 lead into the halftime break.

But the Vikings would not just quit as the came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter as Luke Strenberg put the whole offense on his back to start and scored 16 of his 22 points in the third quarter and the Vikings even cut the Chargers lead all the way down to 11. But Noah Kading would stop any momentum the Vikings had when he converted on a four-point play and pushed the lead right back to 15 and allowed the Chargers to breathe a little easier. Head Coach of the ACGC Chargers Nick Kading said he knew that AHSTW was a very scrappy team.

The Chargers would go on to a hard fought 65-46 win on the road over the Vikings. Head Coach Nick Kading said the Chargers like to play fast but some of their early shots in the shot clock helped lead into the Vikings making a little come back in the third and fourth quarters.

The Chargers now improve to 4-1 on the season as the Vikings fall to 2-3.

ACGC Chargers Cruise To Big Win Over The Lady Vikes

Sports

December 11th, 2023 by admin

The ACGC Chargers jumped all over the Lady Vikes from the opening tip and never let up. Not even two minutes the Chargers led quickly 10-0 by their defense forcing three straight steals for layups. The Chargers would have their best quarter of the season so far as they put 30 points and held a 20-point advantage. The turnover bug caught the Lady Vikes in the first half as they had 15 in the first 16 minutes of action and could just never recover. Head Coach of the Chargers Brad Baudler said getting off to quick starts has been an emphasis on this team early in the season.

The Lady Vikes would pick up the scoring in the second to keep the game competitive as seniors Ella Langer and Delaney Goshhorn both went over their season average with both girls scoring 15+ as Langer posted a season high 18 points and Goshhorn was able to find her jump shot as she tallied four triples on the night, but the Lady Vikes could not keep up with the outstanding post work by Chargers sophomore Camdyn Richter. Richter owned the paint on both ends of the floor posting a double-double and scoring a game 19 points most of which came with the left hand off great footwork in the low post. The Lady Vikes would have their best quarter of the night in the fourth and final quarter when they outscored the Chargers 5 points. Coach Baulder said he had been waiting for Richter to have a big night offensively.

With the loss the Lady Vikes three game win streak comes to an end as the Lady Vikes fall to 3-3 on the season. The Chargers improve to 4-1 and winners of back-to-back games.

Riverside Bulldogs Basketball is seeing players step up

Sports

December 11th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Riverside Bulldogs are having a solid start to the season, going 4-1 through their first five games. In the Bulldogs most recent matchup against Missouri Valley last Friday, they came away with a scrappy 66-61 win. Riverside Head Coach Nick Kroon was happy with how his team responded to adversity.

A key part to Riversides success early on in the season has been the offensive output from Grady Jeppesen. Jeppesen currently leads the team with 142 points, averaging 28 per game, and rebounds with 37. Coach Kroon has been impressed by Jeppesen’s effort over the years.

Yet, Jeppesen isn’t the only Bulldog earning praise and making an impact on his team. Other players are stepping up like Mason McCready. Last Friday he had 15 points against the Big Reds. Through five games McCready has 16 boards, 14 assists, and 6 steals.

Riverside’s next matchup is on the road against the 1-4 Audubon Wheelers Tuesday night. Coach Kroon is aware of the challenge that Wheeler senior forward Edward Miller poses. Miller averages 13 points and 8 rebounds per game.

The game will be streamed on KJANTV with the pregame beginning at 7:20 p.m.
