Iowa women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder says her team is thrilled to be playing in late March and the Hawkeyes host Colorado tonight (Thursday night) in the third round of the WNIT. (click on the left side of an audio bar to listen)
Iowa is 19-13 and Bluder says Colorado is much better than its 17-15 record.
Bluder says the Hawkeyes must handle a variety of pressure defenses from Colorado.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have picked Carlos Martinez to start on opening night against the World Series champion Chicago Cubs. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told Martinez about the choice before he pitched Wednesday in an exhibition game against Washington.
The Cardinals host the NL Central rival Cubs on April 2. Adam Wainwright had started the past four openers for the Cardinals. Matheny said Wainwright took the news well about Martinez getting the assignment this year.
The 25-year-old Martinez was an All-Star in 2015. He went 16-9 with a 3.04 ERA last year.
The Iowa Basketball Coaches Association has announced the All-Sub State boys and girls basketball selections for the 2016-2017 season.
Two Hawkeye Ten boys coaches were named as sub-state coaches of the year, Alan Jenkins of Atlantic was named the Class 3-A Sub-State 8 coach of the year and Kuemper Catholic’s Sean Minnehan was tabbed in Class 2A Sub-State 8.
Local players that were named to an All-Substate boys team include:

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports the River Valley Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Park in Council Bluffs is scheduled to reopen for riding Saturday, April 1st. The park was closed due to safety concerns over flood-damaged trees. Loggers recently completed work removing potentially hazardous trees and trails are now re-established.
More than 80 volunteers recently helped with final clean-up and preparation for opening. Due to safety concerns and to sustain the work recently completed, riders are reminded they cannot go off trail or make new trails.
River Valley is open to ATV, off-road motorcycles and side-by-sides that are 65 inches in width or less. Riders must have their machines registered with their county recorder’s office or with an ELSI vendor for nonresident user permits. ELSI vendors can be found where hunting and fishing licenses are sold.
Riders who are ages 12 through 17 are required to have a valid ATV education certificate in their possession. Operators of side-by-sides must possess a valid driver’s license. For more information about park rules, go to www.dnriowa.gov/ohv
Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz met with the media Monday, as the teams prepares to begin spring drills Wednesday. The Hawkeyes lose five starters on offense, three on defense and must find a new punter.Ferentz says the good thing about graduation is that it creates new opportunities for the returning players as they says goodbye to those who graduated.
The players have 15 spring practices to show their stuff. “One thing about football, our opportunities to practice football, to be in helmets is so limited. So, be it in the spring and then certainly preseason — those opportunities are very limited. Each and every workout is important, each and every practice, the meetings that we have that go along with it, as well as our strength and conditioning work that continues is very important to the players. And I think they understand that,” Ferentz says.
Ferentz says the lines return experience, but they’ll need to find players to complement them. He says they are very young and inexperienced on the perimeter from the receivers to the defensive backs. “I’d throw the quarterback situation right in there with it… we will have a new quarterback, I”m not sure who that’s going to be right now.”
Receiver Matt Vandeberg won a redshirt year after being injured last year, but has been sidelined again with another foot injury and will miss the spring practices. Ferentz says it wasn’t a matter of him trying to come back too early. “He really had a chance to play in the bowl game, that thing was well healed when he got back in January. That’s just one of those things that happens occasionally and there’s not much we can do about it,” according to Ferentz.
The Hawkeyes announced they will hold an open practice for the fifth year in a row at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines on April 7th. Ferentz says they are excited to go back to central Iowa and says it’s a small way to says thank you to the fans who come from the area to Iowa City in the fall. He says they also decided to move the spring game to Friday night as something the fans might like.
Iowa is coming off an 8-5 season where they lost their fifth straight bowl game. They open the 2017 football season September 2nd hosting Wyoming.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced three transactions following Monday night’s 12-6 win over the Houston Astros in West Palm Beach. Outfielder Todd Cunningham and catcher Gabriel Lino were re-assigned to minor league camp while infielder Breyvic Valera was optioned to Memphis (AAA). The transactions reduce the number of players in the team’s Major League camp to 44, including 12 non-roster invitees.
Sunday afternoon, the Cards optioned outfielder Anthony Garcia and right-handed pitcher Rowan Wick to the Memphis Redbirds (AAA) roster and re-assigned right-handed pitcher Josh Lucas and left-handed pitcher Zach Phillips to their minor league camp.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — There was bound to be a glitch or two during the first spring training at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, the new facility shared by the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals. That includes the sprinkler system.
With the St. Louis Cardinals one out from winning the first night game in the history of the ballpark Monday, the sprinklers along the right-field line came on prematurely, delaying the team’s game against Houston for a couple of minutes.
“First year,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said afterward with a smile. Once the sprinklers turned off, Miguel Socolovich induced a groundout to end St. Louis’ 12-6 victory over the Astros.
