WASHINGTON, D.C., April 10, 2017 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today, prior to their series opener against the Washington Nationals, that they have activated right-handed pitcher Trevor Rosenthal (right lat strain) from the 10-day disabled list.  Right-handed pitcher Sam Tuivailala was optioned to Memphis (AAA) following yesterday’s game to make room for Rosenthal on the team’s 25-man active roster.

Rosenthal, 26, appeared in five games (one start) during spring training, going 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in 10.0 IP with 11 strikeouts.

Rosenthal owns a career mark of 8-20 with a 2.92 ERA and 110 saves in 278 games.  He set the Cardinals single-season save mark with 48 rescues in 2015 after posting 45 saves in 2014.

Feldman, Duvall spark Reds over Cardinals 8-0

Sports

April 9th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Scott Feldman allowed four hits and struck out six in six innings, and the Cincinnati Reds beat St. Louis 8-0 Sunday to take two of three from the Cardinals. Adam Duvall had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for the Reds, who have won just five of their last 40 series at Busch Stadium.

St. Louis went 2-4 on its opening homestand and heads on a six-game trip to Washington and the New York Yankees. Feldman left after the Cardinals put their first two runners on in the seventh. Blake Wood and Tony Cingrani completed a six-hitter.

Carlos Martinez (0-1) gave up six runs — five earned — and six hits — in five-plus innings. He hit two batters, walked one and threw a wild pitch.

Diaz hits 2 homers to back Wacha as Cardinals beat Reds 10-4

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Aledmys Diaz hit two home runs, Michael Wacha allowed one run over six innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-4 on Saturday to spoil Bronson Arroyo’s return to the majors. Wacha (1-0) allowed three hits with six strikeouts against just one walk in his first start of the season. The Cardinals (2-3) snapped a three-game losing streak, while the Reds, who had won three straight, fell to 3-2.

Wacha struggled a year ago, going 7-7 with a 5.09 ERA in 138 innings over 27 games (24 starts), but earned a spot in the rotation with a strong spring, posting a 2.42 ERA in 26 innings over seven starts.

The Reds called up 40-year-old Arroyo (0-1) to make the start. Arroyo, who spent 2 1/2 years out of the major leagues with elbow and shoulder troubles, allowed six earned runs on six hits over four innings, with three strikeouts and three walks

Garrett dazzles in debut, Reds beat Cardinals 2-0

Sports

April 8th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Amir Garrett pitched two-hit ball for six innings to win his major league debut, a sharp start for the former St. John’s basketball player as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 Friday.

Garrett struck out four, walked two and needed only 78 pitches to record 18 outs. The 6-foot-5 lefty played two seasons of hoops for St. John’s while already a Reds minor leaguer.

Michael Lorenzen and Raisel Iglesias combined for three innings of hitless relief. Iglesias went two innings to earn his second save.

Joey Votto hit an RBI double off Mike Leake (0-1), who went eight innings. Scott Schebler homered in the ninth.

There were no strange plays at Busch Stadium, a day after a pitch that bounced got stuck to Cardinal catcher Yadier Molina’s chest protector.
