Iowa schedules 2019 home game with Middle Tennessee

Sports

April 11th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Iowa will host Middle Tennessee in a 2019 game that will mark the first meeting ever between these two programs. The schools announced Tuesday that Middle Tennessee would play at Iowa on Sept. 28, 2019. Middle Tennessee officials said the school will receive $1.55 million for making the trip to Iowa.

Middle Tennessee has played Big Ten teams six times in its history. The Blue Raiders have faced Illinois three times, Minnesota twice and Purdue once. Middle Tennessee is playing Minnesota again this season. The Blue Raiders already had scheduled a Sept. 14 home date with Duke in 2019. Two more nonconference games will be announced later.

    Atlantic Head Coach Kathy Hobson:

“I commend all players for their efforts tonight.  Conditions were brutal:  cold and windy.  The windchill dropped 20 degrees (54 to 34) while we were playing.  It is very hard to swing your clubs with cold bodies and hands and achieve the desired outcome.  Everyone just kept truckin along.

Brooke Newell lead our team with a great round of 37.  Brooke has a great mental game; she isn’t going to let the weather beat her.  She had a chip in for birdie on #7.

Mary Hayes played super coming in with a 49.  She is showing steady improvement.”

Atlantic Youth Sports Assoc. receives $1,500 for new scoreboards

News, Sports

April 11th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Trevor Frederickson Foundation recently donated $1,500 to the Atlantic Youth Sports Association. The funds will be used to help with new scoreboards at the Little League Complex (located across the street from the KJAN Studios). Fund spokesperson Melanie Petty (Trevor’s mom), said “Baseball was a huge part of Trevor’s life and we were very happy to help them with this project.”

The board has a clean up day planned for this Saturday, April 15th at 9-a.m. The more volunteers that show up the quicker it can be accomplished. Volunteers are encouraged to bring rakes, clippers, gloves and anything else they can think of to use for clean up.

This year’s season will run from May 11 – June 23rd. The complex is also used for traveling teams, the high school softball tournament and the YMCA Tball program.

All funds raised at the annual TFred Memorial Golf Tournament are given back in Trevor’s name to things he loved. This year’s tournament will be held on Saturday, August 12th.

Iowa State hopeful as spring drills conclude

Sports

April 10th, 2017 by admin

Iowa State closed out spring drills as the offense beat the defense 50-44 in a scrimmage on Saturday. Second year coach Matt Campbell feels good about the progress of a team that wil be out to snap a strong of seven straight losing seasons.

Campbell says the key will be how much progress is made between now and fall camp.

Campbell was impressed with the play of quarterback Jacob Park, who completed 7-of-12 passes for 97 yards.

Joel Lanning continued to impress after moving from quarterback to middle linebacker. The native of Ankeny intercepted a pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown.

The Cyclones open the season at home on September 2 against Northern Iowa.
