Atlantic’s Brockman will high jump for new Missouri Western State University program

Sports

April 12th, 2017 by admin

Atlantic senior track and field member Alexis Brockman announced her decision to continue her career at Missouri Western State University on Wednesday. Alexis signed her letter of intent with family present at the Atlantic High School on Wednesday morning.

Brockman competes in the high jump for the Trojans and will compete for the Griffons in the same event next year.  Alexis will be part of the first ever track and field team at Missouri Western State as Coach Marc Bierbaum is just starting the program this upcoming year.  The Griffons compete in NCAA Division II and are members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

Brockman said she has family connections to Griffons Coach Marc Bierbaum and that helped make her feel comfortable with the decision.

Brockman has a personal best jump of 4’10” so far in her career. She hopes to clear 5′ this season and qualify for state. She said she has gained a lot of great experience in high school but is excited to work with a jump coach at the next level.

Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “Probably the best weather we have had in Shenandoah and all year.  I think it helped that we played the ball up.  There were some tough lies out there.  It was great to score below 300.  That was our goal and we were 8 shots better.  Even though we had a great score, I think we had a few putts that should have fallen and shot even better.  However, we also had some great recovery shots and won’t always go our way.”

Glenwood top score:  Garret Reich – 46

Atlantic Head Coach Kathy Hobson: “What a difference in 24 hours.  It was an absolute beautiful night to be on the golf course. Alyssa Ginther’s 40 very deserving of being medalist. She was very consistent from hole to hole; solid from the box – long and straight. Also, very proud of Baylee’s game tonight – this was her best score of our season so far.

It wasn’t one of Brooke’s better rounds if you just look at the score but she only struggled on a couple of holes and recovered from both of them to finish strong.”

Murphy has 5 RBIs in Nats’ 8-3 win over Cards

Sports

April 12th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) — Daniel Murphy homered, doubled twice and tied career highs with five RBIs and four hits and the Washington Nationals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8-3 on Tuesday night. Matt Wieters and Jayson Werth also hit solo shots to help Washington earn a second home series victory.

Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez (1-0) allowed two runs — one earned — over seven innings. He allowed six hits before retiring his last 11 batters. Lance Lynn (0-1) allowed six runs — four earned — and five hits and four walks over five innings.

Randal Grichuk and Aldemys Diaz homered for St. Louis. Bryce Harper walked three times against Lynn to reach base in nine straight plate appearances going back to Monday, tying a career high set last season against the Chicago Cubs and manager Joe Maddon. He also doubled in the eighth.

The Cards and Nationals are at it again today (Wednesday), beginning at 2:10-p.m. Central Time on KJAN, with the 1st pitch at 3:05 from Nationals Park in Washington, D-C.
