CAM baseball dominates in Anita against Ar-We-Va

Sports

June 17th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The CAM Cougar baseball team had their strongest showing of the year with a 15-0 run rule victory against the Ar-We-Va Rockets on a windy Monday night. Through the first inning it looked to be a competitive ball game as the Cougars could only manage to score 1 run from a Bradyen Chester RBI double to make it 1-0. Then in the second inning the CAM batters locked in scoring 6 runs, four of which came off a Chase Spieker grand slam adding on to the Cougars lead making it 7-0 at the end of 2. Brody Paulsen continued his dominant performance on the mound for CAM consistently sending batters back to the dug out to end the top of the third. The Cougars picked up 4 more runs in the third with a 2 RBI triple from Jack Follmann, a Bradyen Chester RBI single, and a bases load walk to have CAM up 11-0 at the end of three innings. Ar-We-Va tried to rally back in the top of the fourth with two base hits but neither runner would advance past third base due to a strikeout and line fly towards center field.

The ballgame ended in dramatic fashion for the Cougars as Chase Spieker was at the plate with a 2-1 count and bases loaded. The pitch came and Spieker made solid contact to watch the ball go over the fence for a walk off grand slam. Spieker ended the night going 3-4 with 8 RBI’s and 2 homeruns. CAM Head Coach Drew Ticknor was proud of the way Spieker throughout the night.

It wasn’t just Spieker’s performance at the plate that led to the 15-0 win for CAM. Starting pitcher Brody Paulsen did his part pitching 4 innings, having 4 hits, 6 strikeouts, and no runs.

The win props up CAM to a record of 8-5 as they head to Grand View Chrisitan on Tuesday. Ar-We-Va’s loss keeps them winless on the year at 0-8 and they will be at home on Tuesday facing Exira-EHK.

Hawkeyes Head To Henley Royal Regatta

Sports

June 17th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa rowing team is set to travel to England for the Henley Royal Regatta this week. The Hawkeyes will be across the pond for three weeks, exploring, training, and racing against world class competitors.

1500-meter racing begins on Friday with time trials to qualify for head-to-head style through Sunday, if Iowa advances. Iowa’s Varsity Eight is racing in the Ron Needs Challenge Championship and the Varsity Four is in the Borne Cup.

In the second week of the trip, the Hawkeyes will train daily and explore the sightseeing excursion in London, Oxford, and Windsor. In the final week of the trip, Iowa will qualify, if necessary, for the Henley Royal Regatta. Racing will begin July 2-7, in a single elimination format daily. The Varsity Eight will be in the Island Challenge Cup against school or university varsity eights. The Varsity Four will compete in the Princess Grace Challenge Cup in the same format.

First held in 1839, the event has been held annually ever since, with the exception of the years affected by the two World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally staged by the mayor and people of Henley as a public attraction with a fair and other amusements, the emphasis rapidly changed so that competitive amateur rowing became its main purpose. The Regatta took place on a single afternoon but proved so popular with oarsmen that the racing lasted for two days from 1840. Today, the regatta is staged for six days, ending on the first Sunday in July.

The Henley Royal Regatta is “the most prestigious regatta in the world,” according to its website. Races are held on the River Thames, one of London’s main attractions.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JEFF GARBUTT

“Racing at Henley is the equivalent of the Kentucky Derby. It is part of the British Season of events, Wimbledon, The Open and Royal Ascot being the other three big events. Having our team being able to participate is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our athletes. They will get to represent Iowa against teams from Great Britain, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, and Germany. It is a chance for our current athletes from Great Britain to row in front of family and friends. I am thrilled to be able to bring this group of Hawkeyes to perform on the world stage at the most famous rowing event in the world.”

Ryan Blaney wins the Iowa Corn 350

Sports

June 17th, 2024 by Jim Field

Ryan Blaney led 201 laps to win the Iowa Corn 350. It was the first NASCAR Cup Series race at the Iowa Speedway and Blaney took the checkered flag in front of more than 80 family members. His mother is a native of Chariton and his father, Dave, won the Knoxville Nationals in 1997. It was Blaney’s third win at the Iowa Speedway.

Blaney’s entire family celebrated with him in victory lane.

Blaney felt the track offered an entertaining style of racing.

Back-to-back sellout crowds helped make the event a success. William Byron finished second to Blaney.

Many of the drivers were concerned about a recent repaving in both sets of turns and if it would make passing too difficult. Chase Elliott finished third.

Elliott hopes the Cup Seres returns to Iowa.

Christopher Bell finished fourth and would like to see the entire track repaved.

After starting in the back row Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished fifth and says the Iowa Speedway was a great host for the Cup Series.

Sports

June 17th, 2024 by Jim Field

Iowa Speedway officials estimate more than 120-thousand fans enjoyed three days of NASCAR action. Saturday’s Xfinity series race and Sunday night’s Iowa Corn 350 both featured sold out crowds of around 45-thousand fans. It was the first time the NASCAR Cup Series raced at the Iowa Speedway.

That’s Iowa Speedway President Eric Peterson who says race fans responded after the 18-year-old speedway finally landed a Cup Series race.

Peterson on the possibility of the Iowa Speedway getting an annual Cup Series race.

Peterson and his team will spend the next few days evaluating all of the logistics that went in to hosting the event.

The INDYCAR races at the Iowa Speedway are July 13th and 14th.

Sam Mayer wins the Hy-Vee Perks 250 at the Iowa Speedway

Sports

June 15th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

Sam Mayer passed Riley Herbst with seven laps remaining and held on during a green-white-checkered re-start to win the Hy-Vee Perks 250 at the Iowa Speedway.

It was Mayer’s sixth Xfinity Series win in his last 29 starts but his name is rarely mention as one of those who may get promoted to the Cup Series.

Herbst was inside of Mayer on the final re-start but could not make the pass.

The outside lane on re-starts was an advantage the entire race.

Kyle Larson wins the pole for Sunday night’s Iowa Corn 350

Sports

June 15th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Kyle Larson will start on the pole for Sunday’s Iowa Corn 350 at the Iowa Speedway. Larson turned the quickest lap during the final qualifying run and will start on the pole of the first NASCAR Cup Series race at the Iowa Speedway.

Larson is splitting his time this weekend between Iowa Speedway and a World of Outlaws sprint car weekend at the Knoxville Raceway. Larson is excited to be part of the first Cup race at the Iowa Speedway.

Larson says the recent repaving in both sets of turns means there are a lot of unknowns heading into Sunday night’s race.

Ryan Blaney will start on the outside of row one.
